I don't think Clay will justify his big contract, but he can be a useful tool in the mix.

He either takes a big paycut or clears out.

oh trust me, most packer fans would be dumbfounded and irate if Clay got a big contract. not unless he suddenly starts playing lights out. chances of him even being on the team next year are going down with each week.

Both calls were bad but the Matthews one was worse in a vacuum and way worse in impact on the game. Kendricks did lift Rodgers a bit and land on him - still no way it should be roughing. But all it gave the packers was 10 yards. Not even a new set of downs bc they would have had that anyway with the other 5 yard penalty on the play.

Anyone who has seen any of my points knows how I feel about clay. I don't think he is good anymore but he did nothing wrong on that play
Sorry, that play was on 1st and 10 for the Packers. So the offsides would have given them 1 and 5. So, yes the Packers got 15 yards.

Green Bay Packers at 1:37
1-10-GB 38 (1:37) (Shotgun) A.Rodgers pass incomplete deep left to J.Graham [E.Kendricks].
Penalty on MIN-E.Griffen, Defensive Offside, declined.
PENALTY on MIN-E.Kendricks, Roughing the Passer, 15 yards, enforced at GB 38 - No Play.
X9
1-10-MIN 47 (1:32) (Shotgun) A.Rodgers pass short right to T.Montgomery to MIN 38 for 9 yards (E.Kendricks; A.Barr) [S.Richardson].

Clay had a decent game against the Vikings. Maybe not what you would want from a $10M a year player but it is not his fault he is overpaid at this point in his career. After watching ha replay of the penalty, all I can say is Bullshemp! He went straight through Cousins with no lifting and he put his left hand on the ground which in my mind shows clear intent to avoid putting weight on the QB.

I want to see replays of both again. what was the result of the Kendricks play? Just tacked on 15 to a complete play right? It helped. Harder to swallow when it's the game ender INT and they give it back to them and a few more yards.

Here's the call on Matthews. Haven't seen one on Kendricks

https://brobible.com/sports/article/clay-matthews-roughing-the-passer/

I remember Kendricks as taking that extra step, which is fine, but ball was gone and I thought he knew it. his momentum should have taken him over the side of rodgers, but he wrapped up, planted and made sure the shoulder came down in his chest. Matthews' shoulder isn't even on Cousins, it's his ******* right arm with his left out breaking the fall too. They may have both been terrible, i don't remember the Kendricks one well

I think I was perhaps a bit tough on Clay because of last week and it seemed like the script was playing out that way again.

Plus .... Well I couldn't bring myself to blame the refs when it seemed like we left too many opportunities by the wayside in this one. Thank god they did too and I'm still sitting here breathing a sigh of relief that although we didn't win, at least we didn't lose.

It was an absolute crap call and you know it. #1, Cousins still had the ball when he contacted him, it wasn't one of those take a step and make contact plays. #2, he didn't wrap him up and twist to drive his shoulder into him. Kendricks did, it was obvious. Clay had his left arm out too and was around his ******* waist, not on chest. that call was garbage

Just like the one on Kendrick’s that favored the Packers. Horrible.

Agree. The calls were equally horrible, but not equally impactful.

Actually, watch both of those ruffing the passer calls again, I have a few times and there is a big difference. Kendricks left his feet and drove his body into Rodgers, Matthews did not. As a matter of fact Clay appeared to do whatever he could do to keep his body from landing on Cousins, Kendricks move was actually a bit like Barr's last year, but more subtle, shifting his body and leaving his feet to put more weight on Rodgers. One was a penalty, one was not....IMO.

I said it during the preseason and now I can say it with certainty. This new rule and the interpretation of it will cost someone a game and now it has.

Might as well put QB's in Red Jerseys and blow the play dead when they are touched.

Both of those plays should absolutely be legal. If quarterbacks don't want to get tackled, they can play another sport. I totally understand egregiously late hits, hits that could be avoided after the ball was out and the like. But if a defender is in the process of tackling a throwing quarterback who happens to get the ball out, that should not be a flag. Both weeks, in every game I've watched, I've seen 15 yard penalties for normal football tackles. It's outrageous.

For crying out loud, it was in Mike Daniels' head today! He's so afraid of picking up 15 yards for a normal tackle that he let Cousins go just because the guy pump faked. It's trash.

The NFL is darn lucky that people love their product, because no other league is this horrible about creating rules that **** all over the fan experience.

I am not saying it was the right call. I don't think that. I am just saying I can see why it was called

Me too. It's because the NFL knows that injured quarterbacks affect viewership and their bottom line. So they're making it near impossible for a quarterback to be legally tackled, and thus preventing injury. In other words, they're ruining the game because their ratings took a hit last year.

Like I said, might as well put Red Jerseys on the QB's and put an end to the "should they or shouldn't they call it?" That hit by Matthews would have never even raised an eyebrow prior to this year, the new rule has confused officials into thinking that any hit or tackle made on a QB could warrant a flag.

I feel like there's already a separation between quarterbacks and the rest of their team. they're singled out enough. They should be fair game, they're a part of the team.

I think the call was wrong on Clay.
That said I can see how in fast motion a ref would gravitate toward calling it a foul after a rule change that specifically protects QBs from unnecessary hits. Watching a hit in slow motion is like Monday morning QBing to a referee. I had to rewatch it in slow motion to form a solid opinion.. Refs often don’t get that luxury.

I watched Matthews close in on Cousins and then saw the pick in real time and immediately thought, "That's coming back."

We can bemoan the way they are calling it now every week, but it won't do any good. We have to adapt our defensive play to it. We have no choice.

I think we should see the 2018 full body of work before making drastic decisions about Clay. He’s getting a little creeky tho maybe his new nickname should be “Tin Man”?
If he only had a heart!

Thus the reason why they should be reviewed. Now I know some people are going to b*tch about that idea, but if they really want to protect a QB, then review those calls and really determine if first, its was the right call and second, if it was targeting, throw the guy out. I still do not understand why the NCAA has this call down so much better than the NFL?

Had the Clay hit been reviewed, its overturned, very little doubt in my mind.

Matthews will be a free agent after this season with his salary for 2018 being fully guaranteed by now. It's all but guaranteed he won't be offered a contract averaging similar money than he's making right now.

Even with the new rules in place Matthews hit on Cousins shouln't have been flagged. It was a terrible call.
