Sounds like a sweet pick up. I wouldn't be surprised to see bulaga cut now. I heard they asked him to take a pay cut and he said no.... so this his replacement?

It’s all over the internet as Spriggs kneecap is still not allowing him to move well in practice..,we had to make a move to bolster Bulaga and Spriggs...

I would be surprised and not happy if we cut our injury prone Bulaga for an injury prone backup level player.

More than likely Bulaga will be put on the PUP list because he won't be ready by September. Bell will add some depth or maybe even start the first six games of the season. Not a good situation but at least Gute didn't go off and hibernate and expect a rookie free agent to take over.

Likely a stop-gap measure until other players get healthy.

Unlikely a long-term solution at right tackle.

We're not cutting Bulaga just because we signed a guy that hopefully never sees the field. Jeesh.

HHe has started 74 out of 90 career games. From both tackle positions to guard, he has been a starter...

I always envy teams like Carolina and Dallas, who can lose a stud olineman or two and never miss a beat... in GB as soon as a tackle goes down, #12 has to run for his life every down...

Meanwhile Bulaga has 3 blown knees in his career(If I remember right) or maybe a hip and shoulder and two knees... either way he is wore out and unavailable. Yet still making 8 mil or something.

So Yea. This is a great signing. And Yea, it opens up the option to send bulaga to the glue factory .and use his 5+ MIL cap savings to go get another vet or two...

Uhhh...did you watch Dallas after Tyron Smith went down?

They definitely lost a few beats lol.

So to summarize... we need OL depth, so let's cut our 2nd best Olineman to save money that can then be spent on worse players. That's what I'm reading.

I think another way to read it is that, if Bulaga isn't able to play, he's not the 2nd best OL, nor is anyone else worse.

This is a great signing. I don't know much about Bell but I know he's better than what he appears on paper. Bell also plays LT and looked average to above average replacing Tyron Smith, so he should be "pretty good" at RT. With the flexibility of playing either side plus Guard experience this is excellent for our depth.

I wouldn't necessarily let Bulaga go yet, because our depth still isn't where it needs to be and even if Spriggs comes back he's been horrible. He'll probably be cut or released as soon as he's healthy if he doesn't show improvement. Bulaga is good at his job, he just can't stay on the field; but I'd still prefer him available on the bench to Spriggs.

This guy is just insurance. Don’t expect above average play. Average is stretching it tbh

So, in what way is Byron Bell more than "just a guy" journeyman. I can't say I've noted his play if I've ever seen him play.

Here's PFF's grade from last season on 245 snaps: https://www.profootballfocus.com/nfl/players/byron-bell/6848

This will be his 4th. team in 4 years.

Not sure if this was directed to me, but since it came right after...my point was that, even if he is only a JAG journeyman, he's more valuable than Bulaga if the latter can't play. That's all.

It was not directed at you. If it were, I would have quoted you. It is an open question under the OP.
