The total number of tackles doesn't provide any information on where those were made. Martinez didn't seem to make enough impact plays with all those tackles, therefore I don't think him being among the league leaders in that category meant a whole lot.

@tynimiller is well aware of Martinez being an inside linebacker. That's why he suggesting to rather bring in a cornerback or safety.

Don't get me wrong, King played it awfully but it's inexcusable that Pettine didn't put any safety help over the top on the play to prevent a long completion. Actually got him fired.

First of all, of course PFF uses All-22 coaches film to grade players. In addition they have former players, coaches and scouts grading players so it might be smart to put a bit more stock into their grades than the observation of a random posters on a message board.

On that play, everyone was convinced Brady would try a sideline pass to pick up a few more yards for a FG. They didn't have a TO left. Well, everyone except Arians and/or Brady, who instead gambled on a long pass to a #3 WR - that's how sure they were that it would work. It wasn't much of a gamble, but it still took guts in a championship game over a Fg attempt.

And yes, while the primary responsibility was with King for the blown coverage, Pettine should have had a safety on top. If he does, Brady probably goes to his next check down and to the sidelines. It was brilliant, everyone was fooled and the Packers D was completely exposed. Even the announcers (I think Buck and Aikman) didn't see it coming. And of course Brady drops a dime. But the guy was open by 4 yards.

Lol I get that. I think I’m just so ******* PFF because I had a bad experience with them. Nevertheless, they really have grown. I worked in player participation which was a pain sometimes

That's cool man, sucks about the bad experience though.

If you had replaced tough with the word hard, let your mind wander a few steps into the gutter and that is what our censor nanny saw.
So "I was ******* xyz player" versus "I was tough on xyz player" - the first will get censored because it uses the word "hard"?

So the words "hard"and "on" can be used separately. Put em together and that dirty-minded censor says No!

Censor nanny is right.

Wow. Someone must have spent a lot of time on this. Someone without a sense of humor.
It's usually determined by the amount of censorship that sponsors on a site request. Some are pretty darned strict, and if you want them onboard, you go with what they want.

I guess so. But this is a forum for a football. Most of us probably use pretty colorful language when discussing our favorite team. Then again, the forum could be viewed by kids, so I'm ok with the censorship. We all get it anyway.

First and foremost, Pettine should have made sure there was no way a receiver gets behind a player in the secondary without any safety help over the top. Even if the Packers allowed a short completion that field goal wouldn't have been a chip shot anyway.

That's just one of Pettine's failures as a DC. It started with poorly designed front seven play that failed to generate pressure on the QB. Put the two situations together and it spells disaster.

The fact that it would still have been a long FG is just another reason Pettine should have considered a long pass, and defended accordingly. Just makes the failure all the more glaring.

Eh....not really let's use actual metrics from folks that study film grossly more than I or anyone here does.

He's right though-- player evaluation is inherently subjective.

What you posted as hard data (i.e. grades) are just the quantification of subjective observations.

For instance, PFF has created criteria for what constitutes a good play at various positions (subjective), and then they ask their evaluators to judge whether or not that criteria has been met on a given play (subjective). That's why they will actually review their own data and make corrections-- it's not just for errors; it's also for differences in judgement.

That doesn't make all analysis equal. PFF's subjective opinion is a lot more valuable than some rando's who doesn't know anything about football because they have more understanding and expertise. But it doesn't make their analysis objective.

Interesting stuff about PFF. All you can do with an inherently subjective process is have at least a few levels of review. It sounds like PFF does that. The evaluation will never be objective, but neither are the power rankings we get each week.

The Packers should not have any interest in Blake Martinez.

He's not good. He was never anything better than mediocre. And he doesn't play special teams.
All good observations. Did anyone notice when he left GB? Not many.

The FO seemed content when they drafted Clark, and then did nothing to help him. I do like the additions to the DL during the offseason. That unit should now be a real strength on D. Coupled with Alexander, Stokes, Douglas, Amos, and Savage in the secondary, I see a lot more INTs and a lot more sacks.

I did because I wanted them to let him go so we would have to find others. And it looks like we have. I was surprised to learn how fast Campbell is.

Yeah the Packers have finally moved on from guys like Blake Martinez and AJ Hawk and realized the ILB position in the NFL has evolved. These guys need to be more than tackling machines between the hash marks. In addition to stopping the run, they have to drop into coverage, be a ball hawk sideline to sideline, help the DTs and edge guys set an edge, and occasionally shoot a gap for a sack. That's a completely different skill set.

The ironic part is that physically, Martinez looked the part. He was lean and strong. But he was probably never taught to do more than stop a runner between the hash marks.

Oh well, the Packers are in much better shape now. I didn't know Campbell was so fast either. Well, he found a home in GB. Hopefully Walker is a clone.

I'm hoping Q :) is a super star. We'll know a lot more after Sunday I think.
