These are the false narratives that circled Blake. Yet Bobby Wagner was both a Probowl LB AND 1st Team All-Pro in 2020, Blakes last full season.

Here are Bobby Wagners stats for as a 1st team All-Pro in 2020

Tackles 138 Solo 91 Sacks 3.0 Pass Def 8 Tackels for Loss 7

Here are Blake Martinez stats for the same 2020 season
Tackles 151 Solo 86 Sacks 3.0 Pass Def 5 TFL 9

According to you guys. Bobby Wagner can't stop a Kitty Cat and ranks lower in TFL

Martinez was ranked by PFF top 10 against the Run in 2016 and top 10 against the pass in 2018 (Packers).

This was Blakes ranking going into 2021 (injured) from PFF. This does not sound like a JAG. He ranked ahead of Devin White, Tremaine Edmunds, Corry Littleton, Jaylon Smith, Nick Kwiatkowski and Devin Bush. So if Blake is JAG?? Those other guys are that and worse. According to your math, we should also eliminate the only 2 LB's in the NFL to recorded more tackles over the 2019 and 2020 seasons combined. (Lavonte David and Zach Cunningham)

(2021 PFF LB Rankings) 16. BLAKE MARTINEZ, NEW YORK GIANTS

Only Zach Cunningham and Lavonte David have racked up more defensive stops over the past two seasons than Blake Martinez, whose first season with the Giants was a career-best for him in terms of overall PFF grade (75.9). He notched 57 defensive stops and forced two fumbles for the Giants, and he'll look to build on that and be even better in 2021.

Calling Blake a JAG seriously is one of the most questionable things I’ve seen on the forum in my humble opinion…as you outlined a JAG doesn’t do what he was able to do here and even years after.

FTR this doesn’t mean folks I was for resigning him - we wanted a more pass defending athletic rangy LB and he wasn’t

Amen and Amen

As far as signing Blake lets be real
1. it's not in our DNA and even if I was serious?
2. Blake would not play for league minimum, that's a huge insult.
3. It is our strongest position this season and there is no room for him, including cap wise. We have a pair of absolute studs with one of the better backups in the league (Krys Barnes)

All that said, Blake has had undeniable production since being drafted and, until last season, he was the Brett Favre of reliability at LB. Maybe parts of his game could've been better, especially earlier in his career.. but he was a most remarkable selection in Day 3 and if there was a re draft in his class he's an easy top 64 overall prospect, he'd go top #34-#54 area (or somewhere thereabouts). Look around at where the guys were drafted that he's outperformed.. Devin Bush? Tremain Edmunds? Zach Cunninham?

I don’t even watch the Seahawks and I can think of a few plays Wagner has made that we’re memorable. He was an impact player. Blake never was. Not even close. He was so much just a guy that Barnes, and udfa stepped in and we never thought of him again.

I guess he made loads of underwhelming tackles in a poor defense. Week after week you’d have to check the stat sheet to see if he had any production and you’d be like huh, he must’ve been good look at all these tackles. But you couldn’t remember him making a single play.

He was the best at tackling the running back after 5 yards lol

Blake Martinez a better LB than Bobby Wagner? On what planet?

And if Martinez is so great, why would the Giants, one of the worst teams in the NFL, cut him in order to make room for a 2nd or 3rd level O Lineman? Doesn't add up on any planet.

To his credit, I will say this. He was a sure-handed tackler. He got plenty of opportunities given the Packers' weak DL. And the secondary was worse. So even though he regularly tackled guys 5 yards downfield, that was better than letting them into the secondary, which resembled a huge piece of cheesecloth. But being the leading tackler on a weak defense is not a claim to fame - or a Pro Bowl, something he never achieved.

Fortunately, in Campbell, Walker, and Barnes the Packers how have true sideline-to-sideline LBs who can tackle, drop into coverage, and slide to help set an edge. That defense has come a long day from when Martinez was here.

Nobody said that, but you already knew that. Its sidestepping your saying Blake is "JAG" it's a very poor or inaccurate player evaluation ;) Luckily I'm not afraid to call you out on it JOE! :) Now Carl Bradford and Jake Ryan? Those are JAG (coincidentally both picked before Blake)

I've shown you 3 separate articles showing Blake recently ranked 8th, 10th, 16th out of all LB, so forgive me if I don't buy into the "WITCHHUNT"
Show us broad RECENT evidence otherwise??

I think the majority of Packer fans failed to understand the role that Martinez, Hawk, and Barnett played, in the defense. If there job is to clean up behind the line of scrimmage, making sure there are no big gainers between the tackles, they certainly aren't going to expose the middle by plugging a gap, and being blocked out of the play.

No one is saying he is better or same level as Wagner…geesh come on Joe.

Me and @OldSchool101 wouldn’t even support going and signing him but calling him a JAG is just far far from the truth.

Then there's the crossing routes, @ 5 yards off the line of scrimmage. He has to be there to adjust to that. Can't do that when you're tied up with an offensive lineman. Too many variables missed by not totally seeing the assigned role from the coaches.

Yeah. He also played on a substandard Defensive teams overall imo (which someone else noted) Take a healthy 2020 Blake Martinez and put him next to a more modern coverage LB, such as Campbell or this current Defense? (Blake is/was an Old School type LB :whistling:)
He could more than hold his own and you'd see some of that stuff we saw at 5 yard gains (earlier in his career) and they'd be 2,3 yard gains and a few more TFL

Anyway, his injury may be too late in his career, which is a shame. I would have liked to see him play another 3 or 4 seasons

Old School posts Wagner's stats to Martinez. What else do you call that but a comparison? And I'm far from alone in noticing it. So people need to be careful and a little more thoughtful in what they post. Maybe a comparison wasn't intended, but it sure looks like it was.

I simply put up the best player in the NFL stats at the position. Then I posted Blakes stats to show you he's productive. I never once inferred he was better overall

I never for a second thought that was the point of his post.

True that it is easier to have stats when you are part of a weak defense but it is also easier to make splash or memorable plays when you are part of a good defense.

LoL so I posted stats comparing Lazards last three seasons (his first three full time in GB) with Davantes first three here….doesn’t for a millisecond mean I think he is even in the same atmosphere of a receiver as Adams.

Mondio, this is the best summary here of Martinez, as a Packer and a Giant and is a good final word on how most remember him (if they remember him at all). He never made a Pro Bowl in six years. And as you note, an UDFA (Barnes) had no trouble stepping in and playing better. An UDFA.

People can post comparisons that they say aren't comparisons, whatever. Martinez was nothing special and it's looking like his NFL career will be brief. Not much more to say except I'm sure glad we finally have a well-rounded D, including at ILB with Campbell, Walker, and Barnes. Walker needs to prove he belongs. I think he will.

Time to leave Martinez in the past and look forward to a great season for the Packers, and especially that D. I hope they can live up to expectations and become a top 5 group. We'll see soon enough.

So not for 1 second do I believe you looked up any of BM stats. You didn't look up his number of tackles, how many were TFL, just what the avg gain on those tackles were etc. etc. You read this 5 yd. thing on here or somewhere like here or you heard it on ESPN, or on talk radio from some guy who read it on here or some guy named Pete said it and you decided to repeat it. Now don't get me wrong that is only human nature. I am sure I am guilty of the same thing at times. Though I do try to consciously avoid it.
For instance certain posters when reading their comments I pretend I aced the Evelynn Woodhead speed reading class. Others who provide stats or links to stats and articles or just put some genuine thought into their comments I tend to slow down and do my Jim Ignatowski impression when reading their comments. I understand this is a discussion forum and everyone both have and are entitled to their opinion but sometimes when time is pressing you gotta do what you gotta do.

Pretty much anytime someone puts up stats for one player and then another, it's for comparison. if not, then what? to show Martinez made tackles? we all knew that and that requires nothing more than posting Blake's.
He's not even in the same breath as Wagner. he was adequate on his best days and slightly below many times. His last year I watched him get beaten badly on quite a few plays, not extending an offer to retain him was the best option.

How would you figure that? Truth is, during Blake’s entire tenure with the Packers I watched defensive tape every single week. In fact, I watch every single snap on the all-22 tape every week. I’ve been breaking down game tape and putting it in articles at packtothefuture.com for 5 years. I was a 5A defensive coordinator for 7 years. So yes, I’ve done my homework. The fact is, dude was awful at taking on blocks vs inside zone. Even worse against OZ. Gap integrity was all over the place. Backside gap control was always overran when the play went away from him. You can look at the numbers and make judgements off that, but stats are deceiving. Tape isn’t.
