I don't know if I consider Daniels a 'core' player. I think Shields is. But really, other than safety, I see the entire defense as being at least average. I think of Shields, Daniels, Jolly and Jones as above average. Hawk has been playing well - but I saw some goofy play against the Vikings. The rest are at least average. Average means that they could start for about 16 NFL teams.

I think we have some young guys who are developing into well above average - Datone, Hayward, and maybe one or two more.

Not trying to be nitpicky but I see Mike Daniels as a far superior player to Jolly. Jolly has a great story but Daniels has played the second most snaps on the dline and is leading the dline (and it's not even close) in sacks, hurries and pressures. He's played very well against the run and pass. Heck, Daniels looks like the ninth overall pick in the draft while Raji looks like a third rounder on his good days.

Because he is one of the few on defense who acts like he wants to be out there.
Come on, man. Sarcasm.

Which would mean that keeping Daniels and Jolly would be far more worthwhile than keeping an overpaid Raji. Pickett can be signed for 1 more year to fill in at NT, and we can try to grab a good NT prospect in the draft in the 1st 3 rounds.

I think everyone agrees that there is something definitely wrong with the defense. Some say it's the injuries, some say it's the coaching, some say it's execution, some say it's poor draft choices, and some say it's the lack of offense. How about the choice that it might be all of these things combined in a perfect storm?

I don't disagree with your list or for that matter it could be a combination of things. I'd just weigh some of them heavier than others.

I`m going to ask if any people think Mike is actually living on borrowed time at Green Bay and defends Capers because he is a scapegoat for HIS failings lately ?. Just a question

I still contest that Capers has compromising pictures of either TT or MM, how else would this guy still be employed?:barefoot:

Just words. As far as I'm concerned, they mean nothing. Everything MM said was 100% predictable. In other words, blah, blah, blah. . . .
He may have the replacement in mind already. He isn't going to say something now so that Capers loses all his players.

I have stated this a few times, but some just dont think it is valid reasoning.

Josh Sitton today on wssp when asked what was it like watching toby gerhart get 100 yards on our def...Josh replied that it is part of the offenses fault...

He said when they were winning part they were keeping the ball a long time..He said that when they only have 3 and outs the def doesnt get any rest and if that happens a lot in a game, the def is on there to long..So no matter what they do get tired..

I've posted twice already on this asking for someone to give specific evidence that it's Capers' fault and not another coach or players, but still have no answers. Something other than, "the defense is bad, therefore Capers is at fault." Something other than, "the scheme is outdated." Lebeau has been successfully running almost the same scheme for years.

Does anybody have any???

Regarding the fatigue factor. Time of possession in the Packer-Eagle game was 34:24 GB and 25:36 for Philadelphia. In the Giants game they(Giants) did have a 10 minute advantage in time of possession. Time of possession in the Viking-Packer tie was 40:33 for Vikings and 34:27 for the Packers. Not a huge difference. Also, the Packers controlled the time of possession in the fourth quarter as they mounted their comeback. Then in overtime the defense had a pretty good rest as Flynn mounted the 10 play drive for the go ahead field goal. If fatigue was a factor in their allowing the Vikes to march to the tying field goal I don't see why.

What is your question?

I personally think it is Dom's fault and the players fault...It can't be just one..

A coach can tell the players how to do things, but if they just cant then you need to find new players

The 3-4 Scheme is still very very effective, but Dom's coaching style kills the Packers. Also, he has to be held responsible for the players that are kept on the defense. The main thing I notice about this defense in comparison to other top 3-4 Defenses is that we play a passive style of 3-4. We play a style of defense that is soft in the secondary. Our DB's sit back and try to react to the ball. If the front 7 isn't getting pressure then they are sitting ducks. We have a group of finesse style DB's and not physical DB's.

This is the problem. The better 3-4 defenses today have physical DB's whom very often are forced to support against the run. I notice a lot of arm tackling and people tackling players high. I notice guys like Brad Jones who plays LB with a high pad level grabbing to tackle instead of hitting with his shoulder (being physical). Our Safeties do the same thing not being enforcers in the secondary and basically our DB's as a group being the same way.

Woodson could play physical or off the ball and could read and jump a route in this scheme as well as support off the edge in tackling as well as bringing the blitz. I ask you who in the secondary has replaced him? Our DB's sit 10 yards off of the Receivers giving them free releases and then trying to react to the pass pattern. Great QB's have Hall of Fame days against us and ordinary QB's have All-Pro days because everything is predicated off of whether our pressure can get to the QB and if it doesn't which most of the time it doesn't then it's easy picking.

I guess what I'm trying to say is things will not change until we get DB's that match the style of play of a Mathews or Daniels (Agressive) and we start getting physical with receivers off of the line of scrimmage not giving them free releases. This will throw off the QBs timing and if we get pressure then the receivers will not have a zone they can just run to an sit down. Again nothing is perfect but if you hold the guys up at the line of scrimmage then they may not be able to get into their pass routes as quickly thus forcing the QB's the look elsewhere such as check downs when the rush is on. There is a reason why slot receivers are so affective (they sit back off the ball), however GB has gotten eaten up by WR's on the outside repeatedly. Now we can't stop the run either lately but that is a whole other story which could and would be fixed by the secondary enforcing and support against the run.

Just my thoughts!

I'm asking for evidence that the problem is specifically Capers' fault. Like how the scheme is bad or examples of consistently bad play calls. Just saying "the defense is bad so it's Capers' fault" doesn't make sense to me.

Good thoughts. I think with Woodson and especially Collins we were better suited to play up at the line. Collins could make up for guys getting burned at the line and prevent big plays.

Now however, our defense tends to give up big plays. I don't know the reason why, but I do know when a defense does give up a lot of big plays without playing aggressively, bringing the DB's up near the line will probably result in even more big plays.

Why does it seem the center of the defense 10-15 yds behind the LOS is so void of Packer defenders when it is a third and say 9? Drag route across the middle for a first down seems to be there more often than not. And it isn't good catches or excellent passes by threading the needle either. I could probably make some of those passes.

Because outside of CM3 our linebacking group is a wasteland (hyperbole). Seriously though, we have one good linebacker (and he's only healthy about 75% of the time), one adequate linebacker and two other guys that are holding spots. Maybe Perry could improve that but he spends more time in the training room than on the football field. McMillian could also help if you could trust him to actually make a tackle or be in the correct position.

The MLB's are doing their predictable cross blitz when that happens and the DB's are usually not in the neighborhood. The zone coverage is getting beat. If they were getting to the QB, great but I do not know of it happening lately. The blitzers seem to always get picked up or at least slowed enough to get the ball off. Time for a new play. That one has run its course.

I think Capers is great! Look at the 49er game. They sure stopped that read option. Didn't bother to cover anyone and Cap had a career day but we stopped that option. Look how great Cap has been since. Has to be just lack of talent. How can receivers be totally uncovered in some of these great defensive schemes. Must be players not understanding these complex schemes. How else can all these below average QBs have career days against us. Capers should be Defensive Co-ordinator of the year for having to work with all TTs poor draft picks! Yeah Right! What a Joke! HAHAHA!

I can't think of a single 3-4 defense that doesn't run that play occasionally. The problem for green bay is that none of our players on defense right now scare an offense enough to require a double team.
