Any former hocker players give us insight ? Most likely balance and leg burst. The great ones seem to cover the ice quicker than their conpetitors.
“Hockey is a very fast-paced sport,” Van Ness said. “I’m stick-handling with the puck. I’m looking to make different plays and passes down the ice. It taught me to use my eyes, use my vision, trust in what I’m seeing. My motor.

“I have size-17 feet. I was carrying some boats around as my skates. It was almost like I had five-pound weights skating around, getting good conditioning. So my motor, my effort, physicality, all that I believe came from hockey.”

I noticed on one play where VanNess did not contain and that play went for a good gain. Why these pass rushers are not taught when not to rush to the inside, not go to the inside until they are sure there is a ball carrier there, and when it is ok to just get to the QB I don't know. I guess bad coaching. One give away should be when the O tackle is trying to get them to go to the inside. I still want VanNess to play as a rookie. But he needs to know his responsibility on each play.

I've seen Gary do the same thing. I agree with you, seems like OLB are hell bent on getting that sack or hit on the QB and forget about containment. Honestly, if I was an opposing DC, I would keep running and throwing short passes outside against the Packers defense, until they prove they can shut it down.

All that said, sometimes I wonder if the Packers might have better players for a 4-3 defense? The D-Line would be Clark, Wyatt, Slaton and LVN, with Gary, Walker and Preston at LB. Once Campbell is back, he can cycle in and out relieving one of the LB's and Gary can shift to playing DE at times as well.

It's all because an edge guy with 20 sacks gets paid more than a guy with five - even if the other guy plays the run better, misses next to no tackles and is stellar elsewhere. It's dumb.

Agree

Can be the same with DB's and interceptions. Don't get me wrong, I love Gary, but too often I see him give up containment, in favor of rushing the passer. That's great if you get to the QB often enough, but when an opposing DC is aware of those tendencies, they are going to scheme the hell out of the Packer defense. Same goes for the way Barry has the DB's consistently playing 10 yards off the LOS. Much like the Packers offense right now, the defense is too predictable and opposing teams are going to continue to exploit that predictability.

Truth be told Maxx Crosby is the absolute best all around edge defender IMO right now. He'll contain and attack, he'll pin ears back and attack...he'll drop into coverage...and everything is 110%

Oh my word, I love time spent watching him on film. Dude is awesome. My odd take is right now he is my edge #1 over Watt. I know crazy.
Where did Crosby play college ball and when/where was he drafted? Thanks.

Maxx is the best college prospect to come out of Eastern Michigan since I've been out of diapers...but had a lot of question marks and went in the fourth round.

His final two years in college he put up 18.5 sacks, 35.5 TFLs and 127 tackles as more of a inside down man even but DE all day at next level or OLB folks predicted given his stature.

His RAS if I remember he was nearly one of the highest RAS scores of his class along the defensive front...

Ugggg....don't remind me of the Kevin King, instead of TJ Watt 2017 Draft! I get depressed every time I think about it!

That was a first round that I was 100% sure of who the Packers were drafting, with TJ still on the board at #29! TT's last draft and beside Jamaal in the 4th and Aaron Jones in the 5th, a total dud!

He has big feet. I only have a 13 1/2 extra wide. I have a rough time finding shoes. I have to try everything on, and find something that will fit properly. I can usually find something in the athletic shoes from the major manufacturers that works. Sketchers is what I wear almost exclusively now.

Yeah Crosby is impressive. He’s very disruptive. He recorded 10 sacks in his Rookie season which is impressive. Right now he’s pacing 17 Sacks. His TFL last year was 25% and his 4FFumbles just speaks to his being very disruptive.
That said. Our OL without our Probowl Guard and AP LT is waaay below average. Probably a bottom 5-10 type group. It made everyone on that LV Defense look a little better

I do think Van Ness will be good. But he’s likely going to take a year or 2

Thanks Ty. What a find in the 4th round, from Eastern Michigan no less.

Speaking of hockey players the Blackhawks have the no. 1 pick playing, 18 year old Connor Bedard. As great as he will be he has the lean body of a kid and needs more muscle and weight. Van Ness needs to build up as well.

Have you seen Van Ness? Yes he will no doubt add some more muscle but that young man’s body structure is one of the last things he needs to enhance lol

Baby Hercules is an earned nickname

I watched the Blackhawks, and Bedard. About 10# of muscle, maybe 15, and if he can keep his moves, he's gonna be one heck of a load out there to deal with. He's slick with a stick, and floats around on the ice almost effortless. Being a Hawks fan, I'm gonna enjoy watching this kid become the real deal. Hey! In a couple of years he might even have to shave!

I'm not a hockey fan. I did go to one Hawks game in the old Chicago Stadium. We arrived about a minute late and there was a fight at center ice right after the National anthem ended and before the puck dropped. The upper deck shook and rattled all night and it seemed more like a prize fight, well if the building didn't collapse first. It had to be the last season in the Stadium. What a treat.

Many years ago, I met Bill Wirtz while on duty as a police officer. In fact, I stopped him from driving while impaired, and took him home. In response, he gave me four season tickets to the Blackhawks, for the next two years.

I had made arrangements for him to call our station at any time he had a little too much to drink, when in our jurisdiction, and whomever was on duty in that beat would give him a ride home. The tickets were in appreciation for us helping him like that.

Let's just say that I liked the man very much. A lot of fans called him "Dollar Bill," and thought of him as a cheapskate, who wouldn't invest in his team. Yet, he had stars like Bobby Hull, Stan Makita, and a host of others, who made them a successful team.

It was ironic that he really made his money in the business of alcohol.

I just hope they do not lose him quickly like DeBrincat, Panerin, and Teurovinon. They kept a number of players for a number of years but now they slip away.

I had season tickets for one season back in the 70s. Had a big dude named Clarence park and watch my car. Gave him cigars every month. When you made it up to the rafters and were winded they claimed beer would help relieve the chest pains. One time in between periods I ran into old Mayor Richard J. Daley with his chauffeur out in the concession area. It is so much less stressful going to Lambeau even for an oldtimer.

I was at the stadium once in 1980 for a Bucks/Bulls game with no way back down to the loop after the game. A rather unnerving experience.

The Stadium was best place ever to hear (or not hear) the Anthem. The acoustics were amazing.
