Week 9 vs the Lions Pre-Week Chat

The play of the defense will determine if the Packers get a W or a L. And the D needs to bring it. That means Hafley can't channel his inner Joe Barry as he did in the 2nd half against the Jags. No soft zones, play man, and get after Goff.

Goff and the rest of the Lions are extremely confident in themselves, as they should be. So the Packers need to bring the game to the Lions. As Mike Tyson said - everyone has a plan until they get hit in the mouth.

So come out swinging and hit some people in the mouth.

The game will be physical. The bye will be what we need. They will hit us. Let us hit them back. We play them again...at least once.

I'm anxious to see just how good some of our depth players do in this game against the Lions. It's time we find out just what we really have available, as we near crunch time. After the bye, it's going to be all hands on deck, and that's when we see where we land as far as the playoffs.

If Love sits, I won't be disappointed. Better to have him a lot healthier coming off the bye. It would also be a true test of just how much juice Willis has, against a top team. Also, with the make shift offensive line, with Myers out, we're going to find out just how much the Packers can do with quick passes. Also, we will more than likely see a lot more of our back up RBs, with Jacobs nursing a bad ankle.

Games like this are a test of character. Looking forward to it. The Packers just need to be it until the end, so they can steal the win. We've seen quite a bit of that lately.

If it's up to me I think I'm going Willis in this one. Obviously not a doctor, but IMO Love's yet to really look 100% since returning from his week 1 injury. That alone is enough to give me pause. Now I'm hearing it's supposed to be rainy on gameday - that tends to point more towards a run heavy game and I have to think it's going to be easier to risk reinjury (when it's a lower body/leg/groin issue) running around on a soggy/wet/slippery/etc field than a nice dry one. And to top it all off I do think there's some conventional wisdom that would suggest that the best way to try and beat a team like the lions might just be to play a game of ball control. I don't think "start Willis and go super run heavy" is enough on its own, but keeping the ball out of their hands as much as possible might be the ticket. And to top it all off with the rest of our guys carrying nagging injuries and the bye coming up....as much as I'd like to win and jump to #1, I just think it makes a lot more sense to rest some guys to let them heal up all the way, start Willis and perhaps be surprised.

I think there’s a smaller margin between our Packer QB options here if we strategize properly. Limiting Lions possessions is one avenue here. I really like what Malik offers. It’s like he’s hit his stride and gotten off that plateau QB’s have when entering the NFL those first couple seasons. He’s probably going to offer a top 20-25 QB overall production in a macro aspect across the season. However he’s top 5 when it comes to scrambling and in specific usage against the right opponents he can raise the production bar markedly. GB was the #1 Rushing team while he was at the helm. That is substantial. There is a mental feature that’s almost demoralizing to an opponent when you have your way with them on the ground.

If its the x man stalking balls were in business, but if its the D line getting mauled and detroit running at will it will be empty Lambeau at 3rd quarters end. Bottom line stop the run first. Sit Nixon and play Bullard in the slot.

Last season, each team laid a major egg head to head. In the September game, at Lambeau, the Pack were b*tch slapped pretty handily and in the November game on Thanksgiving no less, the Pack jumped out to a big lead but still let the Lions make a game out of it. The Pack allowed no sacks and didn't turn the ball over whereas the Lions allowed 3 of each.

You can look at the boxscore and dismiss those stats as "garbage yardage" if you want, but I don't. Arguably, the Lions are the best team in the NFL at this point in the season and anything can happen as the season progresses. Still, if the Pack are not competitive at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, it's going to be a long, long, long day. The Pack start slowly?? Kiss 'er goodbye.

The Lions, in my opinion, on paper are the more "talented" team and are expected to win. Not only more talented, but in my estimation, the more aggressive team as well. They have evolved into one of those teams that will try to intimidate an opponent from the outset - call that what you want, because I'm not going to say what I call it ... and then, as someone said during the week, will not only try to win by whatever means, they will try to humiliate opponents ... not just win. So, sportsmanship is not even factored into the equation.

Yeah...yeah...yeah... I've heard their response ... "If you don't want to be humiliated, then, stop 'em", right?
That doesn't alter my original premise that sportsmanship is not in their coach's frame of reference. The only response that the Pack SHOULD offer up is some bad attitude too. If it turns into a feeding frenzy of cheap shots and sh*t talk ... so be it. I think though that Alexander won't play - he never seems to when an opponent with actual talent at receiver is next up on the schedule.

If this sounds like I'm counting the Pack out ... I'm not. We'll see if Matt and his staff have them ready to play and if this team has an attitude that's sh*tty enough to compete on the Lions level of sh*ttiness.

There... I've said it. We'll know by half-way through the first quarter what it'll be.

It’s all about the energy we bring. Evan Williams is a big loss. Please dear Lord don’t put Bullard deep at Safety again. Detroit had to have watched him get repeatedly torched. Bullard is a more dynamic version of Savage. Worse than him in the open real estate but Better than Savage if playing read and react closer to LOS. At least he’s not timid when attacking like Darnell.

Sure, they will probably win the division but that isn't all that important as long as the Packers get into the Playoffs. They've proven that Lambeau doesn't give them home field advantage in the playoffs. I'd rather see the Packers play in a dome or someplace warm. They're not built to win in the winter.

With Myers doubtful, it appears Jenkins will move to center, Rhyan to LG and insert Morgan at RG. I'd rather see Monk at center and keep Jenkins and Rhyan at their normal spots. I thought Monk looked pretty good in preseason. Apparently the coaches think he's not ready. But if Morgan struggles, we might see that happen. Myers is gone after this year and Monk is the center of the future. I'd like to see what he's got.

The Weather forcast for Green Bay tomorrow sewed it up for me. Why would you put Love out there on a rainy, soon to be muddy field? Unless, he had a visit from the Groin fairy and it is near 100% healed, you sit him tomorrow.

Detroit had the #1 ranked run defense before the injury to Hutch and Peko.

Their Currently #5 in run yards per game.

They’ve lost both starting DE’s and their top backup. Their starting SLB and backup SLB. 3 DT’s all of their top depth guys. They’ve also lost their starting SS.

Their current starting DEs were on the Practice Squad 3 weeks ago.

Their defense is decimated with injuries and still playing at a pretty high level in spite of it all.

Their offense is missing J. Williams and their #3 RB but relatively healthy otherwise.

Detroit forces opponents to put up points or fall behind. Their aggressive, physical and they wear opponents down.

It goes back to last year but opponents are in for such a physical game that they lose the next week after playing Detroit. Every opponent this year has and many last year did as well.

I agree but someon posted a you tube video before week 8 I think that had all 4 NFC North teams making the playoffs and according to his predictions the divisional round would have been an all NFCN round. In other words, in his opinion, in addition to the Lions having a bye the Packers, Bears and vikings would all win their games on wildcard weekend. I think he had the vikings beating the Commanders, the Packers beating the Seahawks and the Bears beating the Falcons (the Commanders, Seahawks and Falcons would have won their respective division at that point in time.)

I think its highly unlikely for all four NFCN teams to make the playoffs but it makes for interedting discussion.

4 days prior to the Thanksgiving tussle the Lions had to rally at the end to win. The Bears played a great game most of the way and let it slip. The Bears pounded the Lions later in the December cold. Some teams just matchup better at different times.

I was just looking at the active roster and noticed CB Kamal Hadden was listed. I will be watching to see if #36 gets any meaningful snaps. Kalen King and Rochell are listed on the PS, so maybe Hadden has been impressing a little in practice, to be moved up over those two.
