Yes, Thompson traded the 57th, 125th and 248th selection in the 2016 draft to the Colts to move up to #48 to select Spriggs.

On the positive side, by trading the 3 picks, Ted only missed on one selection, rather than drafting 3 busts. You gotta see the bright side in things.

Turnstile Spriggs smh. Best thing that could happen now is he goes to Chicago, Detroit or Minnesota and starts at right tackle.

No team claimed him off waivers. Says all we need to know, or knew, about Spriggs. My guess is that his NFL career is over.

He is injured, that likely had something to do with it as well. Once he's waived with an injury settlement or off IR I suspect he'll be signed with another team. I don't think it will be GB, but he may not be done here yet, though I think he is.

Thanks Mondio, I didn’t know he was injured. He might get picked up mid-season as other injuries set in. But yeah, he’s likely done in GB.

I think if the Packers sustain some injuries on the OL of their own and Spriggs gets healthy, it wouldn't be that far fetched to bring him back for depth. However, I think releasing him at this point, injured or not, is a pretty good indication that the Packers are more than comfortable with the guys they currently have, nor did they see Spriggs finally making the leap that everyone expected from a 2nd rounder.

All good points. Spriggs had three years to prove himself. That’s long enough. Maybe in another system he does OK. I regret they didn’t play him at G to begin with. He never seemed to master the footwork required of a good T in the NFL.

It’s a long season. He might just play again somewhere. But with Turner and Jenkins in the mix, GB just ran out of room for him.

I don't think it was just "out of room", I think they flat out gave up on him. His salary wasn't that expensive ($1,132,404). Had they thought he was a better backup then what they already have or he had a future with the team, he would still be a Packer.

Just to clarify, if the Packers agree to an injury settlement with Spriggs other teams are allowed to sign him earlier than the Packers could bring him back. Therefore I don't expect him to be back in Green Bay at any point if that happens.

Yeah, 3 years was enough. Looking back, I think he would have done better at G than T, even though he wasn’t built like a typical G. He just didn’t have the footwork required of a T, and he was frequently “stood up” at the line, losing all leverage and constantly back pedaling.

Initially you would think that he’s not a typical Guard build. But I remember researching that and the average NFL OG a few years ago was within .5 inch shy of 6’5. Guards have gotten taller over the years in the NFL.

Also he was a beast at the combine and posted a #1 40 time in his class. He was also just 5” shy of a 10 foot Broad Jump which was #1 for players over 300+ lbs. I remember reading about him after we drafted him and they were recommending he move inside to G, at least initially. His film showed he was a good zone run blocker and he blew people up in that area on the film I watched.

He has the length at 6’6.5” to put 20-25 lbs on his frame and still be the fastest OL on our team. He would be a hard man to move inside at 325lbs, he also has incredible upper body strength and packs a punch. Spriggs posted 31 reps while just 300lbs. When you think of core strength you think , Broad jump, vertical and Bench. He was dominant in all 3, so those that say he’s not strong are deceiving themselves.

I just think we’re too far in with him and they’d have to start over to put him at G, that’s a position of strength now for us and we are moving into a different direction than TT’s dream.
If I’m another team needing depth, I’m signing him to a cheap, short term prove it deal and converting him to OG, to the recommendation of the draft scouts a few years ago. The other advantage is he can play OT in a pinch and that positional versatility is a major plus. I won’t be shocked to see him on the field again elsewhere in some capacity.

Interesting stuff, thanks. I would not have guessed that the average NFL guard stood at 6’ 5” - oh well, the past is past. I wish the guy well (just not in the NFC North.....).

In some respect. The fact they cut him is telling of the level of competition at OL.

I have no doubt he was strong, but on the field he wasn't really. There was a kid like that in high school. Could lift the school, back then in small town WI, nobody was benching over 300lbs, but he was regularly at about 150lbs himself. The kid was ripped and I mop the mat with him in wrestling. Zero functional strength. Football was worse, he never went out again after Freshman year, all those muscles and no pop.

Spriggs measured well, it's why they moved up to get him, but it never really seemed to translate to the NFL playing field.

I think that was me Mondio! Are you really **** Corchoran? I was up on you 21-0 and you pinned me in a cradle with under 2 min left, 3rd period?

Ha, no, but I was killing this kid from Casco at sectionals and he put me in the cradle like 5 times to beat me in the last period. We had to wrestle them at team sectionals that following Tuesday and they didn't wrestle that kid against me because I think they figured he got lucky, little did they know, if you were going to beat me a cradle was probably how it was going to happen. It was my achilles heal. LOL

Lol. That actually happened to me also at Central HS. I was rocking and no way was I on one shoulder blade for 3 sec, I guess the Ref could see I wasn't getting out and buying time. I was counting the seconds and up 21-0 and got pinned by an old schoolmate who I used to pick on several years earlier. One of my most embarrassing moments in life my Freshman year.

The Packers could have used another decent guard on the roster but it seems the front office didn't believe Spriggs could develop into one.
