Have you guys ever just posted in a thread rather then the shoutbox? Would really like to see if you guys can do it for one game and see how it goes.

The Shoutbox takes away from activity on the forums. I always hated it for that..

I get the appeal of the shoutbox. Its a faster more instant reaction during a game.

Hmm personally I would hate to see the stuff that usually is said in the shout box immortalized in a regular thread.

I know for myself I usually only post when I am at my computer and I am rarely at my computer at game time. The shoutbox lends itself more to a a texting type response and more knee jerk as Zartan says. I don't think you would get as nearly as much participation on a regular thread as you do in the shoutbox. Even though I usually don't check out the shoutbox and even more rarely participate

I don't know, sometimes I wish some of the things people say on there would be preserved for posterity. If for no other reason than to throw it back in their face when they come back down to earth and realize how stupid they really sounded.

I won't be on threads really during games. and if the regular crowd starts showing back up in the shoutbox, i'll likely leave there during the games too. I'd rather be on my computer for the forums and i'm not near one during the games.

The nice thing about the shoutbox is I can leave my Kindle or laptop on the page while I'm watching the game and it updates itself automatically. When someone says something, it pops up. If people were posting in a thread, you'd have to be constantly refreshing the page to see the replies. And if there's a lot of traffic, you'd have to be going to the next page frequently as well. That doesn't sound like a big problem, but the shoutbox is a lot more convenient.

I often like having the shoutbox on during a game, especially if the game is going poorly. It's a nice chance for a little commiseration.

It is archived the next time midnight rolls around. It is actually stickied.

Few seasons ago, shoutbox had issues and was down during the games. Sometimes the issues were technical and sometimes the participants. Overall, I recall participation went way down.
I agree with the auto update feature of chat is much more user friendly than going through the thread update method. Plus the screen fills with signatures and all the other overhead making it harder to follow.

BTW @Shaggy whatever happened to the del font? The one that puts the line through text.

Shaggy it`s yours to do with as you want, but personally I think the shoutbox has it`s followers and it has it`s haters. I try to monitor when I can, and Zartan does a fantastic job in there gameday, and it would be a shame to do away with it. JMHO

Could ask The mods to make a “Hall of Shame” with snippets from shoutbox ? Lol :whistling: :D

At one time, there was a "Game Day" thread opened. Depending on the opponent it could end up being 100+ pages of pure signature stuff. I go to the shoutbox on game day but generally just follow along looking for the observations of a few posters who notice things on the field that I miss. By and large, when I post, I post from my desktop versus my phone ... I just need a real keyboard... my lack of functioning opposable thumbs at play here. ;)

Late to the party, but I am always in the shoutbox come gameday, and for every single selection of the Draft. Being in the shoutbox is as close as I can get to enjoying a drink/meal/etc with like-minded(for the most part lol) Packer fans. Please don't ever get rid of it. We'd have probably a dozen threads based off of somewhat minor things that go on during the game. If anything, we need to highlight the shoutbox on game day and during the Draft, so members who aren't as familiar with it can be encouraged to check it out. Maybe something to the tune of "There are 47 members chatting in the Shoutbox right now!". Granted it's your site(you should start selling shares in true Packers fashion so I can feel like I matter), but you are doing a handful of members to include myself a great disservice.

I highly disagree that the shoutbox detracts from regular forum activity even on game days. I've seen many threads either started or continued in even on game days over the years, even if during the game itself more people are ranting in it than in these threads.

If it has to happen, then fine I'm open minded enough to see how we it might go to take gameday discussions into a thread instead. But the shoutbox has been a fun part of the site for years and and closing it on gameday would be fixing something that isn't broken. I'd predict there will be a ton of negative feedback about it.

I like the shoutbox it rock like a game of Casino Royale.
I’ve always likened it to a Slot Machine.. it feels like if I keep playing long enough.. I’m going to Win something. It’s got an addictive type of appeal.

I just turn on the news, it’s clearly the faster path to really getting into a miserable mood. ;)

I'm not planning on removing it as I wanted your opinions on it.

I would ask this: what's the intent of the question?

Personally, I agree with others that the "hot take" nature of the shoutbox makes games more sportbar like to get instant reaction on the game. Lots of times threads get derailed and taken away from the topic, but shoutbox usually has 5-10 voices in real time keeping it on track.

Plus, the manner of posting without hesitation due to game circumstances give a less sanitized and more personal experience.

Just my opinion.

I checked out the Shoutbox once when I happened to have my laptop open during a game. I couldn't stand the distraction (or the negative vibe). Whatever is done, I likely won't be a part of it on game days.

Not sure how many of you are old enough to remember AOL. The reason why it became so popular was people had access to the net and another feature called chat rooms. It was real time and people had an avenue to chat with others. It was really cool. These chat rooms are the thing of the past. It would be nice to bring them back so people can connect in "real time" again. So I bag do not get rid of that.

Not only do I like those chat rooms but I get to swear in it. I know it's a childish thing but "yelling or swearing" on forums is not the same thing! By the time I bring up the thread, find the post button, type and hit reply that "moment" had past! Then again I guess that is one of the reasons why I get banned from chat rooms.

It's does get negative in there. Which is one thing I hate about it is the constant whinnying!
