So does that mean we're cutting Jamaal Williams? Can't believe they're not solid on Dexter Williams. This is perplexing given the need at ILB but oh well I suppose.

Jamaal Williams is safe, as is getting Dexter Williams to the PS. He is nowhere near ready for the NFL and I highly doubt any team is even going to take a whiff as he passes through waivers.

Gute and MLF need to find a 3rd RB that is game ready.

Has Kizer ever won an NFL game where he started? This project is taking way too long and he's not ascending for a player with his experience. This is too important a position to be pretending like we are set for the season.
I realize we are in a desperate position this late in the game, but If I'm Gute, I'm looking to formulate a reliable back-up plan if he comes in and whiffs again.
The backup QB's I've watched around the league in preseason are nearly all ahead of our QB room. I'm concerned

I like your optimism, but it's probably more of a situation where not a single team wanted to give anything for the rights of a 2nd rounder that quit in year 3, and his attitude sucked enough they wanted to get him out of the facilities.

Well this is undoubtedly true. But I'm sure they've been trying to trade him without success for some time. For some reason or other, they cut him now and not a few weeks ago. It may be because they have confidence that Campbell will be ready for the season.

Raiders cut RB Doug Martin today.

Martin had his best season since 2015: 723 yards while averaging 4.2 yards per carry in Oakland.

I'm not sure what you're expecting? Not a lot out there right now.

I'd expect to add players once teams start making their 53 man cuts.

I guess I am hoping, more than expecting, that Gute can land an ILB and even a #3 RB. Believe it or not there are a lot of guys out there right now, whether they are currently FA's or possible trade deals. I wouldn't necessarily just sit back and wait for other teams cuts, if there was a better option of getting a guy into Green Bay now, a week ahead of cuts.

"The Packers signed a couple of former undrafted rookies: LB James Folston and CB Jocquez Kalili. Folston (6-3, 233) originally signed with the Cardinals out of Pitt. Kalili (5-10, 185) originally signed with the Jaguars out of UNLV."

It's not like Gutekunst is holding open 90 man roster spots for some impending signings.

I see now that's old news.

I view those as 2 signings of potential PS players, wanting a full one week evaluation of guys they had high on their UDFA boards back in April.

Well, we know that so far Gutey has been super aggressive in FA (particularly in replacing under-performing or oft-injured players).
I suspect we see a couple more veterans at various positions of need.
Those will likely be S, ILB, DT, RB, WR or QB. Much of that will depend on the availability and cost of said acquisitions.
It'll be like a flee market of players at discounted prices over the next couple of weeks.

According to Rob Demovsky, Gute and the Packers are actively looking for a RB in the trade market.

Bills TJ Yeldon, who OC Hackett is very familiar with, might be an option.

Another list I saw had these players as possible targets:
  • Matt Breida (San Fran)
  • Chris Thompson (Wash)
  • Corey Clement (Phil)
  • Chris Thompson (Phil)
Gute could just wait for cut downs, but I think if the player fits the Packers system, doesn't cost a lot, trade for him now and assure yourself of actually getting said player and giving him a bit more time to get acclimated to Green Bay, his teammates and the Playbook.

Breida is a really good player, but I don't think that the Niners would move him. They've already lost McKinnon out of that backfield.

Chris Thompson is capable, but about as fragile as can be.

Corey Clement would be a nice pick-up. I recall wanting the Packers to draft/sign him when he came out. My Badger fan comrades advised me that that was a bad idea ;).

I don't believe the Eagle have a Chris Thompson.

Other names that come to mind from crowded backfields: Bilal Powell (NYJ), Rex Burkhead (NE), C.J. Prosise (SEA), John Kelly (LAR).

Yeldon, Clement, and Powell are the most interesting names to me. I'm not sure if any of them would necessarily require a trade. If they do, it would be pretty small compensation.

Yeah sorry, that was suppose to be Josh Adams. Evidently the Eagles might be willing to get rid of Clement or Adams. Thompson is the Wash. RB that is rumored to be available.

I would be in favor of Gutekunst trading for an inside linebacker capable of starting next to Martinez but there's no reason to give up anything for the third running back on the depth chart.

Can't believe they're not solid on Dexter Williams.

EDIT - I'm not familiar on the system run in Tampa Bay and Oakland, but the Raiders just cut Doug Martin. Boom, no trade needed.

Dexter Williams hasn't shown anything during the preseason to justify being comfortable in him making the roster.

Martin is done, the Packers shouldn't be interested in him.

Those will likely be S, ILB, DT, RB, WR or QB.

I definitely understand the need to add a veteran inside linebacker but at this point there's no rush to sign at any other position.

"Recapping today's roster moves: Claimed off waivers: ILB Nicholas Grigsby (23 career NFL games with the Lions, Patriots and Rams). Signed: OLB James Folston (rookie), CB Jocquez Kalili (rookie). Waived: S Josh Jones (non-football illness)."

https://www.espn.com/nfl/team/_/name/gb/green-bay-packers

While Grigsby has appeared in 23 games he has only played a total of 42 defensive snaps so far. He has mostly been a special teamer up to this point.

Tough call on that one. If they have a specific RB they really like, there are 2 advantages to trading for him. First, you get him for sure and don't risk the team not actually cutting him or another team getting him first via trade/waivers. Second, the additional time you have him to try and get him up to speed. Obviously, this advantage is dwindling fast.

But yes, if you think there will be enough quality guys waived to choose from, wait until team cut downs and grab a guy. But if there is really someone out their that you feel is head and shoulders above the rest, go get him and if it costs a guy you were going to cut anyway or even conditional 6th or 7th, might be worth it.

Didn't we have a few years in a row where TT was searching the garbage heaps by mid October trying to find a capable running back or 2? Get the capable #3 in sooner than later, I think with Jones's injury history, they are going to need one.

You can find solid starters searching garbage heaps when it comes to RB, i'm not inclined to panic over finding a #3 or even give much up unless I see a guy that is sure fire and would be pushing to start anyway.

While I agree with you to some extent, I disagree on the notion that you can find a "solid starter". Remember, that heap could include names like Tre Carson, Dexter Williams and Keith Ford. It is also a heap that TT picked over a few times and came up empty.

I think we both agree that if there is a team with a solid group of 3-4 RB's and one is a big upgrade over what we currently have for our options at #3, a trade might be worth it. But yeah, I wouldn't break the bank on it.

That's wishful thinking. You can find former solid starters out on the street for not a lot of money. The reason they are available is because they are beat to crap--a recent serious injury, a series of injuries leading to a permanent decline, or just mentally dulled from all the pounding. RB is the fastest depreciating asset in the NFL.
