He's been good/great 2 out of 3 years here, I support it. Preston + Gary are a solid starting duo now draft a guy on day 2 to give them depth.

Hedges our OLB/EDGE needs assuring we have 2 solid starters, potential growth prospects behind them and doesn't pinch Gute feeling a need to have to get a guy early in April.

Much needed player on this defense. Ecstatic about the re-signing. He's been a good pass rusher and is always available.

Extension not resigning. He was already signed just to avoid confusion for others.

This is the type of move I really wanted to avoid. Preston turns 30 in November. He’s not the most athletic guy in the world either. I could see him quickly falling off and being stuck with a late Clay Matthews situation.

Wait for the structure of the deal...all we know presently is overall figures. It very well could be team friendly departure after 2023

I'm good with this. Preston plays with good leverage and attitude. He showed up out of shape one year, owned it, worked his butt off to get back and finished the year strong. Didn't make the same mistake last year. He's a good pro in my book. I don't think I'd put him in danger of what happened to Clay.

Clay was great because he was hair on fire and speed or overpowering. I think a lot of that came from "help" and that speeds up the toll football takes on your body. Preston is different. He's solid, and his strength comes from being long and leverage coupled with technique. That has a better chance for longevity than How Clay achieved his production.

I think its a smart move and fills many needs. Z. Smith had missed a great number of games over the last season and a half.

He is a game wrecker when healthy, but the cost of the contract and cap figure was too much.

Preston Smith has been solid his whole career. Great locker room presence and leader. This sends a message that GB will take care of players that are consistent and produce.

The upfront signing bonus is the win for P. Smith while the steady cap hit is easily digestible for GB, especially with the cap increasing over the next few years.

This will be the last huge deal he gets and the end of contract may coincide with his time with GB, either through retirement or release.

Also, Gary will get a huge deal if he continues ascending as a premier pass rusher. 3 huge deals for pass rushers is a bad allocation of funds. The middle child had to go.

Yup yup yup.

I look forward to seeing the structure as I see it as for sure being cuttable after the 2024 season, and may be somewhat team friendly to cut post 2023 even depending.

well, it looks like we know one guy who won't be joining him.

I think most of us saw that one coming - His cap hit was too big to absorb.

Billy Turner gone as well - EJ will take his spot.

Folks, the structure of this deal is VERY team friendly for getting out of it without a ton of dead cap honestly at any point but really after three seasons, and quite digestible even after two.

In regards to Jenkins, it comes down to whether or not his rehab goes the way of Adrian Peterson or the way of David Bahktiari.

The comparison to Clay Matthews is way off. Matthews was a speed and motor guy - hence the "hair on fire" reference. Once the speed was gone there was nothing left. As mentioned, Smith plays with good strength and leverage while also playing hard. Maybe his hair is smoldering versus being on fire. Preston can and should have a longer career.

The deal structure for Preston is pretty good. Way to go Russ Ball - MVP.

It is very well structured. Essentially a cost to the team vs the cap will drop as cap grows as his money if on roster barely changes...Preston will earn a lot of money if he keeps producing and stays healthy. For sure three years without question IMO at this cost if he can stay as productive as he has been past three here and can be a starter for us...minimum we need two years from him is how I see the structure; three and we are GOLDEN if we have to end it.

Its funny how it seems every time a players signs a long term contract the first thing people look at is when the team can get out of it with a reasonable amount of dead money. In many cases it makes perfect sense as many so contracts are structured in such a way that everyone knows the last year or two are never going to happen. What you say is very true of course but if you look at the entire contract and assuming P doesn't fall off the hill its not a bad contract for him to see all of it either. I don't think a 16 million dollar cap hit in 2026 will be all that outrageous if he is still performing.
