Its funny how it seems every time a players signs a long term contract the first thing people look at is when the team can get out of it with a reasonable amount of dead money. In many cases it makes perfect sense as many so contracts are structured in such a way that everyone knows the last year or two are never going to happen. What you say is very true of course but if you look at the entire contract and assuming P doesn't fall off the hill its not a bad contract for him to see all of it either. I don't think a 16 million dollar cap hit in 2026 will be all that outrageous if he is still performing.

He keeps doing well, there is absolutely a chance you let him play out the entire thing because it is a very consistent and solid contract! If he is still a starter in the last year that figure might seem high now, just wait till then and contract escalation has another four years of growth.

The only concern here is that Smith's motor doesn't run as hot, as we saw in 2020.

However, that wasn't a problem when he broke out in 2019, and the staff who knows him best clearly wanted him back.

The cost is excellent relative to other deals being handed out.

Reduces his cap hit ~ $5M.

Actually the Packers saved $8.26 million of cap space for the 2022 season by extending Preston.

This is the type of move I really wanted to avoid. Preston turns 30 in November. He’s not the most athletic guy in the world either. I could see him quickly falling off and being stuck with a late Clay Matthews situation.

The Packers could actually save cap space by moving on from Preston after the 2022 season.

Folks, the structure of this deal is VERY team friendly for getting out of it without a ton of dead cap honestly at any point but really after three seasons, and quite digestible even after two.

As mentioned above, if Preston doesn't perform up to potential the Packers could even save some cap space by releasing him after the 2022 season.

In regards to Jenkins, it comes down to whether or not his rehab goes the way of Adrian Peterson or the way of David Bahktiari.

At 311 pounds, I'm concerned Jenkins' rehab will most likely be closer to the one of Bakhtiari instead of Peterson.

Right! It is clear Preston fell in love with this place with how he has restructured in past, signed this deal now - I mean arguably so long as he performs as a starting level guy he could play this whole contract out which is awesome. Very low risk to team, could pay off big for Preston if he simply performs.

I’m down with Preston’s contract. Good for the Packers. I’m not sure what he and his agent were thinking. That type of contract gives the team all the power. They can cut ties whenever they want with no repercussions.

As for Jenkins and his injury the average time for lineman to return from ACL tears is 10 1/2 months +\- 1 1/2 months.

Honestly, it is also a Preston "betting on himself" type deal. He plays starter level play, that is a deal a team can let play out entirely even if he does that, but man it is gorgeous deal that really if you get two years out of him it is excellent and three years it is near perfect.

The silent man behind the curtain sure knows how to use those levers, don't he?

But he also gets another sizeable chunk of cash up front with the option to make a lot more just by continuing to play. It doesn't put player or team in a particularly bad position. He's not looking at getting cut in a season or 2 unless he completely drops off. and if he does he got some cash up front in case that happens. So many of these guys are looking at renegotiating or getting cut because their cap hit balloons so much.

Had a buddy say he just didn't see Preston as worth this extension as to him $52M on four years for a guy who is 30 years old seems crazy high...but seriously I think he and many Packer fans just don't realize how sweet of a contract structure this deal really is for GB:

I mean come on...unless unpredictable injury happens for Preston - he should still be a starter for this year and another most would bet on...in 2024 the you're talking about a $7M savings move to cut ties with him which gets to double digits after that and VERY dumpable before final year. This type of contract is the exact type of someone that likes where they are and are willing to bet on themselves, because as long as Preston stays as one of our starters on the edge his contract no doubt will continue to be digestible for him to stay here. Here's to Preston helping us get a SB and for sure playing out his career here....I can easily envision a future where Preston will forever be remember as a Packer and one well loved by the fanbase when it is all said and done.

For reference of those questioning his play..."Of 61 edge defenders with at least 300 pass rushes, the 29-year-old ranked 10th in pressures and 12th in pass-rush win rate, according to PFF."

I definitely agree the Packers did a great job of structuring Preston's contract. Actually they can move on from him at any point if his performance declines significantly.
