1. I said the offense is actually pretty bad in crunch time.
2. When was the last time you can remember a game ending and saying to yourself thankfully the defense stepped up and saved the day?

If you are being 100% honest with yourself, you will be trying to figure it out for a long time.

Easy. The defense stopped New England on one of the final drives in the 4th quarter preserving a win.
Also, the defense held the Cowboys to only 7 points in the second half of the playoff game.

As for the offense, review the end of the Miami game.

Its all perspective when you start saying "crunch time" in regards to our offense and defense. In the list above the defensive game against Seattle is listed as a slight against our D for failing in the clutch. But really they forced 4 turnovers and kept Seattle largly in check. The offence dropped the ball that gane pur and simple. The D played more then well enough to win.

The point im makeing by pointing that out is you can take a look at any single game we've ever lost and point to either the D or the O falling short or strait up stinking it up. We lost. Of course something went wrong that game. But pointing to playoff loses as proof while dismissing the playoff wins as fools gold is folly.

Lets just try an exercise. Lets take a look at all our loss' s this year and lets see which side of the ball gets the blame.

Week 1 Seattle: Really both sides get to share the blame

Week 3 Detroit: The D played lights out. This ones on the Offense.

Week 8 NO: We were hanging with them till Rodgers knicked his hammy but this loss we can put on the Defense.

Week 15: Rodgers has the worst game of his career. This ones on the Offense.

NFCCG Seattle: Like I said above. D kept them in check till the final few minutes. Plus added 4 turnovers to the Packers cause. This ones on the offense.

Now you can add up the games where the offense bailed out the D this year also but really id only put the first Bears game in that category and maybe the Jets game.

I guess what im sayin is for all the talk about how some think the defense is Achilles heal and take the blame for the Packers not winning the SB but just this past season id say when you can only put one loss, the NO game, and a share in another, Week 1 Seattle, the D might just not be as horrible as people think

There´s no denying the offense had some off games over the last four seasons as well but mostly the defense is to blame for the Packers losing games over that period. In addition you forgot about the special teams allowing decisive touchdowns in losses vs. Buffalo and the Seahawks during last season.

It's not just the losses, some of the worst performances out of our defense over the years have been covered up by offensive performance and we still ended up winning. Rarely does a poor offensive performance turn into a win due to the defense stepping up.

That´s true. The Packers have won only two games over the last four season when scoring 20 or less points while losing 12. On the other hand the team has seven wins while allowing 30+ points over the same period.

The defense hugely benefitted from a terrible rule that day though.

It wasn't a bad call though. The defense got the stop.

Shields and the blitz did not make it an easy play. When I first thought it was a catch, it was one of the plays where the credit goes to the offense doing a fantastic job more than the defense playing poorly anyway.

If you don't see a serious defensive problem at the bottom of that drive chart, then you were not watching the game.

Defensive coordinators get fired for that in any other town.

Yeah, the problem at the bottom of that drive chart? No NT or ILBs to help stop the run, Matthews was out and Williams got beat by an undrafted receiver that would have been on the Packers' practice squad...

There´s no doubt the refs made the correct call, it´s a terrible rule though and the defense got lucky to get a stop there.

Wasn't lucky for the blitz to get pressure and for Shields to be in the perfect spot. The defense did make it a tough play to make.

Well, if you´re satisfied with the defense making it tough for the opponent to make a play they at least accomplished that mission.

The Rules Committee is reviewing the matter this week.

Reports are saying they are OK with the rule as implemented but changing the wording of the rule is under consideration. The only good thing I can say about the implementation is that it's been reasonably consistent.

My opinion is the rule as written is fine...it makes the catch contingent on a "football move" which Bryant clearly executed provided one wants to respect the athleticism within the game. He gained possession, turned, took two steps, then contacted the ground. The moment of possession in that play is as easily (or difficult) to identify as in the many 1/100th of a second two-feet-down sideline/endline replay determinations that are made based on super slo-mo.

I'll be very curious as to how the league cleans up this clusterf*ck with a mere wording change to bring the rule into agreement with current practice. I don't don't see how they can do it. Once they get around to defining with more specificity what constitutes a "football move" they're going to run into problems. I'll wager the league will make some token change that solves nothing or the matter gets tabled this year for further examination.

The league causes it's own problems, and moves like a glacier going uphill to fix anything. It took a while to get instant replay, and nearly 20 years later they still haven't gotten it right. They can't even clearly define what is and isn't a catch.

And they actually made the stop too.

I'm not going to discredit a stop because of a rule that affects every team in the league. If it was bad call, yes I'd discredit it. The fact is though, they made the play.

Not counting a kneel down to end regulation, the Seahawks last 3 possessions were;
7 plays, 69 yards, 1:43 TOP, TD
4 plays, 50 yards, 0:44 TOP, TD
6 plays, 87 yards, 3:19 TOP- with the last 2 plays being passes of 35 yards each, and ending in the game winning TD.
That's 17 plays, 206 yards and 3 TD's in 5:46 TOP on their last 3 drives.
Pretty much indefensible stuff for the defense, fellas.

Not so fast... I don't know if he's saying that he'll become this player by default or if he thinks that the team believes he's ready but either way it doesn't sound like they're too concerned.

I don't understand why so many people on here think you have to run a 4.4 to be a good corner . It's probaly the ones who never even played the position and don't understand that instincts and technique have more to do with the position than how fast you run. It's plenty of guys who ran a 4.4 or even a 4.3 who played their way right out of the league. I believe that Hayward or even Hyde can be solid replacements for Williams. Sam Shields runs a freaking 4.2 and I've seen him get beat deep plenty of times. Look up corners who are in the Hall... Tell me how many of those guys were blazers ...I'll wait.

Good points, Rodell330. IMO, Hayward's greatest strength is his instincts. He's a natural football player.

I really don't think those last three drives are a fair assessment of the defense's talent level. I still have absolutely no explanation for what happened at the end of the Seattle game but the offense gaining a total of two yards in six plays and the special teams losing an onside kick didn't help matters during that part of the game either.

During the first 55 minutes the defense allowed 173 total yards on 51 plays (3.4 yards average), created a total of four turnovers and allowed zero points.

I've been quoting those numbers since the week after the game. And still...many want to ignore the brittleness of the defense and put all the blame on some combination of the offense, McCarthy's play calling or special teams.

The defensive collapse should jump up and slap one in the face, just as going 7 quarters without forcing a punt illustrated some deep weaknesses, be it coaching, players or a combination of the two. Since the DC isn't going anywhere (at least this season), better players are required.
