Mike Holmgren's Legacy

But he had to get rid of the ball too early

I don't remember the details about the game anymore but Favre threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns while Elway only managed 123 yards without a TD. Davis rushing for 157 yards and three TDs was the decisive factor.

You guys are going to depress me, talking about Super Bowl XXXII.

I recorded that monstrosity ... Accidentally recorded over it. Told my son that he should resist the temptation to find that game and he didn't listen...found it a couple years ago and still says he should have listened to me.

The Broncos were a good team, played their best game of the year and deserved to win. They didn't get lucky. They created their breaks. The Pack were out played and Holmgren was out coached.

Agreed. So many Packer fans say the Broncos got lucky and we should have won. But the truth is we couldn't handle them on that day, so they won fair and square. It was no fluke. The Packers were heavily favored because they were defending champs, and because the NFC had won 13 straight Super Bowls. But the Broncos were a lot better team than people gave them credit for. As they proved the following year when they repeated as champs.

It was a close game though. I have it recorded on VHS somewhere, lol.

There was nothing classy about the way Holmgren left the Packers though.

Recruited Reggie. Won a SB. Helped make the franchise relevant again.

How will you remember his tenure here? Should he get into Canton?

I think he's on the bubble. Another SB win would have cemented his induction, but as it is it will likely come down to how strong the class of candidates is in any given year.

I'll root for him.

Holmgren has been eligible for the Hall of Fame for five seasons now and hasn't even made the list of 25 or 26 semifinalist in any of those years. Therefore I highly doubt he will ever make it to Canton.

Likely the case.

Tis a pity.

There's a lot of revisionist history coming out here, especially from that article mentioned. Favre would have bounced out of the league based on his lack of commitment and lack of fundamentals. Holmgren and others shaped him into a HOFer. Holmgren also didn't inherit Reggie. He helped get Reggie here. Those 90s teams didn't win in spite of Holmgren's play calling. He did his job while constantly recognizing young coaching talent, bringing them in, and using them while he could to harness top teams each year. All of those future head coaches didn't fall into his lap. Ron was certatinly helped by Wolf, Shurmer, and (yes) Ray Rhodes but most SB winning coaches have lots of help.

The way that I always understood the circumstances of him leaving was that he wanted both jobs and was told "no" so he left for a job that gave him what he wanted. I have no problem with that. Wolf then decided he didn't want to be GM around 1999 and worked with Harlan to transition Sherman into the role around 2000/01. To me that was a slap in the face of Holmgren, either that the Packers couldn't get their act together to commit when he requested the dual role or they didn't think that he had the chops. It looks like they were right of course.

All said, Holmgren was a very good coach in the right situation. IMO a Canton-worthy coach either needs to do it for a long time or do it with multiple teams. Either way, it demonstrates that it's more than just the right circumstances but that the coach was a big factor in continued success. One SB doesn't put you in Canton, but it rightly sparks a discussion.

That's true. I still laugh about the story that Holmgren called White (who repeatedly mentioned that he would sign where God wanted him to go) and left a message on his answering machine. “Reggie, this is God,” the message said. “I want you to go to Green Bay.”

I was thinking of that exact story when I typed that, but I'm sure there was more to him coming here than just that one call....and the massive paycheck.

NFL Network aired the Mike Holmgren episode of A Football Life last night. I thought it was a pretty good watch. They hit mainly just the positive spots, but there's nothing wrong with that.

It talked about Holmgren's influence on three HOF quarterbacks (Montana, Young, Favre) plus Matt Hasslebeck. Talked about how he took two franchises that were at the bottom of the league (Green Bay, Seattle) and took them to Super Bowls. Those two franchises are still very relevant today, so you can see that he really had a hand in turning them around.

Favre said when Holmgren left Green Bay, he thought that things would never be the same, and they weren't. He said that had Holmgren stayed, he couldn't guarantee they would have won more Super Bowls, but he said they would have gone back.
Like I said, a nice view if you were considering watching it.

I'm definitely watching the Holmgren "Football Life" ... son is DVR'ing for me. ...but the massive paycheck thing and his phone call to Reggie pretending to be God.... someone, a long time ago said that Reggie was astounded at how much his wife Sara sounded like God in telling him to come to Green Bay. I about laughed myself sillier.

I got to watch this today and it was good. A few things I had never heard before and some footage of Holmgren as a high school QB ... Including footage the made Montana, Young, Favre and Hasselback laugh their ***** off and then say... Hey not bad...

Oddly, ZERO mention of his time in Cleveland. :)

Would you mention time spent in Cleveland? Like I said, this show focused on the highlights and stayed away from most of the lowlights.

I guess not many here were interested in watching this. I know there's some bitterness with Holmgren over how he left, but he was instrumental in bringing the Packers back out of the dregs. Appreciate the good, forgive the bad.
