jokes aside...they don't have the money to waste on another TE. besides...they have LEWIS (i really did mean lewis lol) for that AND he can catch the ball.

Smith would present an upgrade over Lewis. I'm not convinced the Packers are interested in any additional dead money counting against the cap though.

he just might be. we really don't know though, as we've never seen lewis thrown to. :whistling: ;) :D
maybe this year.

Smith wouldn't be a threat in the receiving game (he has a total of 56 receptions in eight years) but he excels in blocking.

then he really can't be an upgrade over lewis then, because lewis can do both. we just haven't seen half his game...for numerous reasons.

While Lewis didn't play much last year, his blocking was not as good as it used to be.

Lee Smith is not a big receiving threat, but he has been one of the better blocking tight ends in the league for a while now. He's significantly younger than Marcedes Lewis and has proven more recently that he is still good in a blocking role. I would feel better about him as the Y option in 12 personnel.

I don't think we need a blocking TE, at least in the sense of a TE who's only for blocking purposes. I'm hoping this is the last year we need Lewis and add another TE with some blocking skills like Sternberger, who I believe is more of a strength issue than anything. That's a roster spot that could be going to our OL or front seven.

It would be nice if they didn't need one, but given that none of the receiving threats (Graham, Sternberger, Tonyan) can block worth a nickel, at least for now, it is an absolute must that they carry a TE who can block. And if they're going to have a guy who is almost exclusively a blocker, then I prefer the guy who is four years younger and has proved in this most recent season that he can still get the job done. At the very least, it would be nice to see them bring in competition, rather than have Lewis as the only candidate for that role in training camp.

Lewis hasn't been as productive as a receiver for several seasons compared to early in his career. The last time he had more than 25 receptions in a season was in 2012.

Smith would be an upgrade over him in blocking while the Packers should rather use Graham, Sternberger and Tonyan as receiving threats.

Cohen was careful to say that there's plenty of time for things to change before training camp, but he noted that Lewis looked really heavy, slow, and out of shape at OTA's, and that a lot of the various media types noticed and were talking about it.

perhaps...who knows. his productivity was down a lot last year because he wasn't thrown to. he was open last year but was looked past. his last season in jax was pretty good...and that was with a new coach and bortles. one obvious thing about the gute regime is versatility. it's prominently mentioned in pressers about players. i think that's why they were quick to resigned him. he not one dimensional. when he's in there it's not a given what he'll be doing.

i heard that too...the heavy part. not the slow, out of shape, part. if that doesn't change they may move on from him.

Are there any O-Lineman currently on the roster with TE experience? Why not use that player as a TE with the situation pops up. Guy doesn't even have to catch a pass, just eligible as a TE. As long as he lets the ref know he is coming on the field as a TE, he can get real game reps. Plus, GB wouldn't have to waste any more cap space, getting more value from the player.

While Lewis was a versatile weapon several years ago he didn't excel in blocking last season and in addition it was obvious he regressed as a receiver as well. Actually I was pretty surprised the Packers brought him back for another season.

Smith definitely doesn't present a threat as a receiver but he would give LaFleur a better blocker.

That might work in short yardage or goal line situations but on most plays it isn't smart to have an offensive lineman eligible as a receiver.
