One starter of five leaves and one of the best lines in the league goes from a strength to a glaring hole.... hmm.

Especially when, through most of last season we were looking at maybe losing 4 of 5 starters. I think we weathered that storm pretty well. I would have liked to see Tretter back rather than Barclay but as RRyder pointed out 5.5 million is a lot to pay for a backup lineman

Yeah and Tretter's only real starting spot is center, where they have a good, young player. So they had to let him go. Perhaps they'll get a 5th round pick out of that deal he signed with CLE.

Johnson is a better trade target than Butler, but he's on the tag so I'd squeeze them into a deal for a lot less than a 2nd. When you have to right away either give a guy a costly extension OR pay him 16M for a one year rental, it depresses the value. If they stuck at a 2nd round asking price, I'd pass.

I agree with you, but I am just not sure how much longer we can play the "value" or "good deal" game. The time is now.

If you can get a true number one corner, which fills the biggest hole on the team, for a 2nd round pick that has proven to be a bust 50% of the time, you gotta do it. Even if it means the player needs a contract. They can throw away the tag and strike a deal until July. And Russ would probably work the magic with the structure again, Johnson could have maybe a 10 mil cap hit but collect the same 16 he would if he stayed on the franchise tag.

I would agree if they were trading for a true #1. Johnson is a lot better than anyone currently on GB's roster, but I wouldn't call him that.

Trumaine is a number one.

Would he be the best in the league? no, Sam Shields wasn't either.

We need someone to assume the role. No questions asked

I also am interested in Mo Claiborne too. Injury concerns which sucks but has looked the part during his time on the field.

See and I'm actually pretty freaking happy we didn't pay him that. Really good player but damn that's ALOT of money for a Guard.

hopefully that will net a 3rd round comp pick, cos Bennett will probably cancel a 4th if that's all Lang gets us

I guess he's a number one in the sense that he's the top corner on his team, but I don't think he should be considered a true "#1 CB"-- i.e. someone who you're satisfied with as your top CB.

Now that said, I agree with you that he'd be a good acquisition... for the right price. Only the dregs of the league say "we MUST have position X, so we're going to pay whatever, no matter how much."

I briefly mentioned this in the GM thread, but I kind of like this idea:

Up through 2014, Brandon Fusco was looking like a late round gem for the Vikings and developed into a pretty good starting guard. Since then, he got paid and things went downhill. Now he's on the street as a roster cut. He's 28.

Given that he is coming off a couple of pretty bad seasons, he should be cheap. You might get him without any guaranteed money (incentives could be a good option). He was cut, so it would be irrelevant to the comp. pick formula. Plus, our OL development and coaching is among the league's best whereas the Vikings are among the worst in that area.

Bring him in, see if he has anything in camp. Best case scenario, he regains his starter quality play and you have a huge bargain. Worst case scenario, he truly does suck for good and you cut him without being out much (or perhaps anything).

One thing I'm OK with.. This staff knows who can step in..

Why?

bakhtiari, Taylor, Corey..

This staff time and time again get players to plug in, we all *****... then it shows the staff know what online players are good enough for us

I liked TJ as much as the next guy, but we can't keep handing out giant contracts to just the O-line. Yes they were good but not Cowboys good. Rodgers still makes a lot of his plays because of who he is. Speaking of 'ol Aaron, he did just publicly state that he's in line for a pay raise. I'm sure that didn't help our staff when evaluating how much cap space to play with this off-season.

I suspect that TJ wasn't exactly bleeding green & gold after his buddy Josh got the boot this season. Money talks at this time of year. TT often offers money but doesn't go to the same lengths that other GMs will go.

James Campen will continue to earn his money.

They didn't offer that at all.. Heard way under

Yeah I saw that also. My response was to the other poster thinking we should've matched what he got to which I disagree.

Personally what we offered is more in line with what I would've been happy with.

Really? Almost 10 million years for a guard who is getting old seemsnluke too much to me. 7 million a year seemed good to me but that was not enough

As long as TT uses that money to help defense I'm fine with it. However, if he just sits tight then he should of paid Lang.

I just find it amazing that anyone would say our OL coaching is among the best in the league since so many wanted Campen's head on a platter just a few years ago.
