We Agree??? Good pass rush hides problems behind it and where we're picking I think we have a better chance of getting a better rusher than a DB. We could always, (pause for effect), trade up!
I doubt we'll trade up in the first. I agree with the rest of your post. I really expect to see more pass rush this year.

Yea I'm not sure what the plan is on defense. But it sure looks like Ted has way more faith in them than anyone else does. And if they decide to roll into the 2017 season with this current crop of CBs plus whatever rooks, I won't be expecting the results to be pretty.

And Don't draft Taco!
I'm still highly optimistic that both Randall and Rollins will rebound.

First, I was very happy with Randall for much of the season. After the groin injury and surgery, he wasn't the same. He also hurt his shoulder if I'm not mistaken...

It was apparent he wasn't 100% at the end of the season. But it wasn't until the NFC championship game did I decide a #1 cb was a must. We can not spend another season on such a high risk idea... Randall looked bad. Slow. He played off and was always late. Avoided hits...

It looked like his groin and shoulder were still bad.

Not sure why all these trade scenarios are popping up. ESPECIALLY with such a deep CB class. If we're trading the 29th Overall Pick and we're trying to get essentially a better corner it's going to take a whole lot more than the feeble offerings you guys are putting up as players.

The main thing you guys are failing to realize is how does this potential trading partner view this pick? I'm assuming you're trying to trade for an already established No. 1 CB? Granted they receive a 1st Round Pick in return to address that need but depending on who's available they may not want that prospect and have to spend it elsewhere, which essentially creates a hole that didn't have to exist in the first place.

And finally, who's going to pay for this No. 1 CB? If we're talking an already established elite NFL CB they tend to carry large contracts, so how do we pay this player AND sign our Draft Class and potential FAs post Draft?

For those who are going the angle of simply trading up in the Draft, it's going to take a whole lot more to trade up then a pair of CBs who almost definitely wouldn't start on their new team. For who's available in the Draft, if it's not Lattimore, Humphrey, Fournette, Barnett, Foster, or Cook, there's no point in bothering, a talented CB should fall to us regardless. In case you guys haven't paid attention lately, it will take a King's Ransom to trade into the Top 10, and not much less for Top 15.

You missed my point.

Current = Randall, Rollins, Gunter + Others

Trade Rollins + #1 pick for a better CB (not sure who specifically though)

Future = Better CB, Rollins, Gunter + Others

See, no change in depth chart and we have a better CB to boot.

I would have preferred to sign a #1 cornerback without having to give up another player or draft pick in free agency though.

First, I was very happy with Randall for much of the season.

What??? Did you even watch Randall play at all last season??? He was flat out terrible nearly all year long.

Trade scenarios are being brought up because currently it's the only way to acquire a #1 cornerback, especially as it takes most prospects at the position drafted at the end of the first round several years to develop into a decent starter.

While the pickings are certainly slim at this time of the offseason there are a few options possibly available in Butler, Cockrell or Johnson.

Randall looked good through preseason and up until the groin injury early on. The struggle started week one when he became out #1cb. But I think he held his own until he got hurt...

I don't care about Randall's performance during the preseason at all. Once again, he allowed Diggs to have a career day in week 2 when he was completely healthy.

I'm sorry to break it to you but if he struggles without a #1 veteran cornerback expect more of the same as in 2016 as the team currently still lacks one.

I'm not the first one to see the parallel with Adams sophomore slump.... but if you don't recall, I was one of the few to be optimistic about an Adams rebound. And thought the idea of him being cut was ridiculous... you just don't go from a promising rookie with star potential, to #6 on the depth chart like that imo.

And the diggs dig. I can't dispute that. But that game Bradford was playing great. Peterson kept us honest defensively the first half, and went down, handing the ball to bradford the second half...
I just watched the 9 catches. Randall was covering him only half the receptions. The TD was a great throw catch. Randall was there but couldn't make the play. One plat he got burnt. Like he expected help or a different route. Otherwise he was right there every completed pass. He did miss a tackle early on too....

9 catches for 182 and 1td isn't the end of the world anyways. Plus we don't even know how good diggs really is yet... he looked good . And his stats show uptrend...

I was optimistic about Adams last offseason as well and don't advocate for the Packers to release Randall at all. It's a huge gamble to rely on him performing at a decent level against opposing top receivers though.

BTW giving up 180+ yards to a mediocre receiver is terrible and if the secondary continues to allow receivers to put up such numbers the team will fall short of winning another Super Bowl once again.

I am no Randall hater but that is a odd take. 182 yards was like the 5th or 6th best WR game of the regular season - two of the better ones came against the Packers as well with marvin Jones and Adam thielen (who was covering those guys?). Diggs only had 4 other games over 60 yards the whole season and after that game he topped 80 yards just once and was under 50 5 times so I dont think you can say he is trending upward.

Because his rookie year he had 500 yds, and his second he had over 900 yds with a broken offense. He also battled injury last year.... he looked big, fast, and physical against us that game... so I see the potential for him to continue to get better.

It is an odd take. Outside of the injury, I do think Randall has the physical skills to be pretty good. BUT, I think he's very undisciplined and gets lazy on a lot of plays that result in him getting torched for huge plays. If he is coachable he'll be ok, if he continues with the same approach, he'll be out of the league before a 2nd contract.

I'd be curious to see what Joe Whitt really thinks about Randall and Rollins.

He's probably thinking...one day TT will draft real corners. I don't blame Whitt for any of this, you can only coach who's on the roster. Out of the current group of corners they have Hawkins is probably the best one.

So it would appear that you believe Randall has topped out. Put me in the disagree category on that notion.

Count me in the group that thinks that Randall and Rollins will play better this year. Frankly, you can get much worse. However, I do think that they both suffered through injury-filled seasons and HOPEFULLY learned that it's going to take more from them if they want to be successful in this league.

All of that said, they don't appear to have the ability to be top CBs. If they rebound I expect them to man the #2 and #3 spots with House playing as our best CB. We will draft either a guard or CB with our first pick and likely add competition/depth later on in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th rounds. Randall and Rollins both contributed early and often in the 2015 season, even making game-winning plays. We could get that out of the draft this year, but I would never expect it.

It's extremely difficult to draft a cornerback making an immediate impact at the end of the first round. That's why the position should have been addressed in free agency.

I agree, Randall was a FS in college and was converted to CB. When I played semi-pro, the team that picked me up reassigned me from SS to CB because I wasn't a big hitter(so you leave me one on one on the outside with a RB vs help with LBs, rightttttt) Only thing is, I appeared to be even less of a player because now instead of occasionally having to man up against slower TEs or RBs who either ran screens or had very long developing routes out of the backfield, I had the other teams best shot every time on the outside because they played tight man all day. What resulted was I had been so used to playing guys with whom I had a speed advantage or I had extra seconds to react to the play that I appeared incredibly slow or lazy in coverage. To give Randall the benefit of the doubt, that's what I tend to see out of his play. However when he's playing the deep third or half, he appears excellent, which is something I used to do myself, because once I'm in Cover 3, Cover 6 etc, it was all muscle memory. If Randall does falter in GB, he may have a second chance going back to his natural position of playing FS for another team.

Good information and insight, thank you. The thing that troubles me is if this is true, why do professional coaches (Joe Whitt/Dom Capers) not recognize that need (to switch Randall to FS) BEFORE they let a #1 pick fail and subsequently cast off from the team?

I also played some semi pro as well. I loved playing corner on the outside... Beating up on WRs and getting ints. But of course I'm 6'2 198 lbs and ran a 4.44. Randall and Rollins seem like runts to me...not very strong at the point of attack or that fast. The league is full of little corners and BIG fast WRs.

I guess that having Burnett and Clinton-Dix starting at safety as well as the lack of talent on the perimeter has kept Randall at cornerback. It might be smart to move him to his natural position though.

He can't tackle ...that would be a nightmare against running teams. A nightmare.
