House going on IR, Packers sign Breeland

Here's the important question with Breeland:

Did we just happen to bring him in when his foot was finally healed, or is it not fully healed and the FO just decided to take a gamble that he's close enough to 100% that he'll be able to play?

Given how desirable of a FA he was and how many teams brought him in for visits, those are the only scenarios that make sense to me: he's just getting back to good health or the Packers were the only ones willing to gamble.

As far I know, his last visit before coming to Green Bay was with the Bucs on September 11. So it's been two weeks. I guess it's possible that his foot wasn't quite ready then, but is now. Or perhaps that he hadn't been able to get back into playing shape, but has now? So hard to say.
There's a 3rd. possibility: the skin graft didn't take that well, it is evidently the second time he gone through this in the same place, the possibility it will chronic is acknowledged, but they think he can play through it well enough at less than 100%.

In any case, at this moment, something is not right given the term and amount of the deal.

And to boot the league has an ncentive that if you take on a 4yr Vet for 1 year min. you get the 2yr Veteran cost. That’s just 511K prorated!
Long Snappers make more than that.
Like HRE said that’s almost too good to be true.
At the same token the risk vs. reward is dynamic enough that if Breeland has any decent level of production? this will go into nomination for “the best contract NFL signing in 2018” award. Nice job Gute

It doesnt sound right. Several teams pursued him it would seem he would get more than the veteran minimum.

He gets dinged for not being consistent, but can play at a very high level. Great signing with little risk. Hope he works out, we really need the help.

With King being iffy and House headed to injured reserve the Packers only had three healthy cornerbacks on the roster. Therefore I don't believe the team signing Breeland results in Williams being moved to safety.

Williams has only played 200 snaps at free safety during his career with his most extensive work there during the 2016 season. Breeland has only played a total of four snaps at the position. That might indicate both aren't viable upgrades.

Alexander actually played significantly more snaps pn the perimeter (68) than House (26) during the first three weeks of the season. It's true the Packers rarely used Jackson (12) on the outside.

Jones is not suited to line up at free safety.

Is the King injury more serious than we thought? Regardless I love this move considering the market for corners was insane this offseason.

I agree financially speaking minimal risk with Breeland. Really the risk that the Packers are taking is only in what has been mentioned, is he ready to play? If he is and he plays like he has in the past, a great signing. If he isn't ready to go and never gets ready, then the Packers lost out on the money, but more importantly, having their second choice playing.

I just can't imagine why they would sign him if he isn't ready to play, unless he is only a week or two away.

Clearly the risk is extremely low at that cost. As for whether there is a reward, that will play out on the field. There is the opportunity cost if Breeland has issues while Plan B, Amerson or otherwise, is off the market. It won't take long to get an idea if this is going to work.

it could be that if breeland does well this season, then he may have a gents handshake with Gute about extending his deal with more than vet minimum

Williams, King, Alexander, Jackson, and a healthy Breeland is a really nice CB corps. However, they're going to need to generate some more pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

.....and hope that HaHa, Brice/Jones don't collide with each other or other teammates ;)

The thing I keep trying to say to myself is "Those safeties are young....they will get better...." :geek:

The Packers have the benefit of being the only team allowed to negotiate with Breeland until March but I highly doubt such an agreement is in place.

Yeah, I don't know how one could phrase a hand shake agreement with any specificity. How do you say more than, "If you earn a bunch of snaps, stay healthy and play well, we'd be interested in talking about another contract at the end of the year." If that happens his market value goes up, the Packer offer could be below market and he scoots. If that stuff doesn't happen, then....

The more likely selling point would have been, "With you we will have only 5 CBs on the roster, we've got an injury, 2 others are rookies, and we run a lot of nickel and dime. With us you'll have the opportunity to earn snaps."

I'd say pretty much any player that is going to be a FA knows that if they play well, they'll be getting another contract. From someone. It doesn't matter, why would he have a handshake agreement for here? If he can't play, we're not going to bring him back. If he can play and does, every other team is going to be watching too and he's going to go where he feels it's best (ie who offers the most money) and play there. Now maybe we get an inside track on his healing and everything if he's not ready for this year. But I assume since he's practicing and things, they expect him to play. So he's going to the highest bidder next year. maybe it's us, but if he's playing well, he's not going to limit himself to just here.

On the subject of Breeland and $, tatooed or otherwise, this back and forth with Demovsky is both interesting and amusing, particularly Breeland's "market" Freudian slip:

https://www.packerforum.com/threads/house-going-on-ir-packers-sign-breeland.80587/page-3#

In conclusion:

"I just want to get back to the player that I'm meant to be, that I've always been," Breeland said. "And just show them that I am that player they saw then and I will still be that player now."

It's what you would expect him to say and that's all that matters. What happens after that remains to be seen.

Come on...you mean Breeland won't give the Packers the "home team discount" that some expect from every player?

I doubt with the amount of potential money on the table for either side, there are many "handshake deals" going on in the NFL anymore.

Of course we have an inside track as we have exclusive negotiating rights from now until early next March. Maybe do an extension but definitely have a good idea as to his health and whether he is a good fit for the defense. At least as far as this staff runs it.
