I can't understand the mindset that you want the players to freelance and do whatever they want in order to try to get a coach fired. You think a bad DC is the worst you've seen.. have the players go that path.

There is more to the story than just this.

Wish they would have played in Charlotte sooner though since his hometown cured his shoulder so.. got that going for him at least.

I have honestly wondered if firing Barry was discussed pre-season or even in-season and someone said "let's keep him, we could use a few extra losses to improve our draft position".
Maybe, but I hope not. I doubt preseason. If we had an average DC I think we get into the playoffs and make noise. If they knew how bad Barry was, they would have fixed it.

Maybe Barry always had excuses, but this season should have been the fruition of a lot of talent investment on defense. In season? Maybe.

Packers defense is:

13th in passing yards allowed
30th in rushing yards
17th in points allowed
23rd in total yds allowed.

Not good. But not the worst in history. And we have above average talent on defense.

Good grief. Time for a reality check. He's not the worse DC right now in the NFL let alone the history of the NFL.

What he did was anarchy and you cannot have that on a team. It was Jaire thumbing his nose at teammates who didnt vote him as a captain.
What judges JB more is that he is coaching a defense that on paper has how many no.1 or 2 picks unlike the offense. A bad defense with bad players is one thing. But a bad defense with what are supposed to be good players is another.

Sure, you have to take that into account. But worst in NFL history? I think that's way overboard.

To add they are ranked 27th in stopping 3rd down conversion at 42.6%.

Go back to our 2004 season. They fire Ed Donnatell because of the 4th and 26 to Freddie Mitchell. They hire Bob Slowik who is supposed to have an " attacking " defense. We got torched that year. Teams burned us for points and big plays. Were it not for our offense we do not win the division. Now that was a bad defense. Maybe our worst ever.

I love how posters here think they know why players are benched

Or maybe they know all off inner circle stuff

Wait until truth comes out

And there's the rub, he's a non-producing leech. Having a few good defensive games over the course of 3 years doesn't even equate standard coaching in my book. After Sunday, where BY had his best game of the year, the game clock was the only thing that stopped them, not the defense.

No. In no way was that hyperbole. He is absolutely the worst DC in the NFL. Name a worse one.

Donatell was scapegoated. He wanted to bring pressure on 4th and 26. Sherman overrode him.

Donatell had some success as a DC in the NFL. Barry never did.

Ironically, the Packers sacked Donavan McNabb 11 times prior to that 4th and 26. So it is hard to believe why you would not bring pressure. They drafted Nick Barnett because he had the speed to chase down the Vicks and McNabbs. Dropping into coverage was not his Forte as a rookie.

All I can tell you is that Joe Barry has had 3 different cracks at being an NFL DC, and every time has failed miserably. This time he's had the most talent in his career to work with, and the results have still been bad. Are they the worst defense in the league? No, they're not, but they're performing at the floor of their talent level. There's too much talent for them to be the worst no matter who was running the show.

Is "worst in NFL history" an embellishment? Sure, maybe, but that's only because it's a completely subjective measurement anyway and the list would be too long to really assess. I'm sure there have been worse 1 year stints, but those DC runs mercifully usually end before they get to the end of their 3rd year. The fact that Joe got a 3rd year on a 3rd failed reign as DC is borderline criminal. The man has been given opportunity after opportunity. Nothing ever suggested something was going to suddenly click this year.

Are there worse defenses in the NFL, a couple, yes. Does any other DC get less out of their base talent, I really don't believe so.

I agree that he is bad. I want him gone as much as anybody. I was very disappointed when he was hired. None of his stints as a DC resulted in any improvement in his defenses.

This season the defense will play decent for stretches and then bad for stretches. Interspersed in there were some decisions and plays that make you scratch your head and wonder. Now we are seeing signs of dissension with Jaire and Campbell. Barry is losing the team and needs to be replaced. He is awful.

It is impossible to determine who is the worse DC in the NFL as it is so subjective. I watched the SD/GB game and another SD game and watched sone of the worst secondary play. Guys were running every which way, almost random at times. There was a receiver or two or three open almost every play.

Which gives me an idea. Maybe we should make Barry our WR coach because he knows how to scheme open a WR.

Do you think those same players who vote for captains also want to see Justin Jefferson torch a depleted secondary to the point it costs them a game? I would venture to say no. Alexander showed poor judgement but the whole team gets penalized with him out. Is that fair? I think a fine that penalizes a single player instead of a suspension that penalizes the entire team would've been appropriate.
How much of a fine do you think would be appropriate for a guy who's banking over $14 mil this year and over $45 mil for his career?

With Barry as fate would befall us, he was good at coaching linebackers and thus was given a couple opportunities for a wider scope of responsibility.

Unfortunately, just as you can be a very good coordinator but a very bad head coach, you can be a very good position coach but a very bad coordinator.

I would guess the league has seen enough of Barry by now for him to get a 4th shot as DC.

The Packers' defense is terrible. If you take out their week 9 game against Brett Rypien (cause let's be honest, that wasn't a real game) the packers' defense ranks a solid 32nd(!!) in the NFL by DVOA. That's right, when accounting for opponent, the Packers defense this season has been worse than the Commanders or the Cardinals. They are the worst in the NFL.

I don't know if the Packers adhere to progressive discipline but you don't usually start out with a very big penalty at first. A fine isn't going to hurt Alexander all that much since he's making big bucks, but upping the ante to the point where you are hurting the team when a playoff spot is still possible, seems to me like it's a huge overreaction. Cool heads didn't prevail in the front office. That's all I'm saying.

Well I’m assuming the suspension means he loses that game check… that’s a good starting point.

Based on MLF's presser yesterday, it sounds like Jaire was fined at least one time before. Possibly for the comment earlier this year regarding saying he was tired of getting scolded for speaking to the media. Which occurred AFTER Ja got taken to PR for some personal coaching after he told the media the defense just needed to hold opponents scoreless for the team to win.

Anyway, if he's been fined before and he hasn't learned, a suspension is the next logical step.

You really think this is the 1st time something has happened with Jaire this season? That everything has been great and suddenly the Packers went stupid and suspended him for a once time transgression? Even JJ Watt on Mcafee said there was something else there and they agreed with him.

Excellent point. In his presser, MLF referred to a prior incident with Ja for which he was fined. Matt Schneidman said there are incidents with Jaire that have not been reported.

He's being suspended for a game. That's pretty stiff and embarrassing actually. All this talk about MLF losing the team is groundless imho. Sure, probably players are unhappy when they see, like us, 3rd or 4th and 3 and a wide open field for 9 yards and maybe a linebacker or DE guarding the RB or a good receiver one on one. But sometimes I think the board is just playing into the sports writers/talking heads' program and making mountains out of molehills. Until finally, there really is a big problem.

If you are in nickel and double teaming or otherwise have a deep safety, the back as the 5th receiver will by necessity by covered by a LB or a DE when a stunt drops a lineman back. That is true for most teams, not just the "pretend to play defense" at Lambeau. Willing to bet for at least one play in a zone defense will have Preston covering Jefferson this Sunday.

Except if you are going to put a DE in coverage...you just don't do it. And put a safety in his place. I guess if we have Preston covering Jefferson; we have conceded the first down.

But..they have a history of raiding other teams. Tarkenton 2nd time, Joe Kapp Canada, Randall Cunningham Philly, Warren Moon Houston, Brett Favre Jets, and Kirk Cousins Washington. Now Dobbs!
Their way has produced 0 championships..and 1 h.o.f. qb. Although whoever plays against this defense will look like a h.o.f.er!

Whoever coached the defense in the 70's and 80's were the worst defensive coordinators in history!
