Does clay get fined or suspended this week?

OK I’ve seen both plays. CM definitely pancaked Smith... he flat out flattened him with 100% of his body weight.... stupid stupid stupid play.... we’ve seen it from him before. Would that be called a few years ago ? No. Was it as bad as the play Rodgers got hurt on last year? No. Was it clearly a violation of the rules put in place by owners to protect QBs? Yes... clearly... no question. Could CM have avoided coming down with all his weight in Smith? Yes. The Rodgers sack in todays game that everyone is wailing about? Not even close to the same. The guy grabs Rodgers as they’re going by and spins while dragging him down. Almost NO body weight on him. Trying to compare those two makes you sound like someone who has to win based on debating refs calls instead of superior play. Last weeks call against CM was questionable. The Chicago game was just plain a dirty hit. This week was stupid. What’s a pass rusher to do? Adapt to the rules or hang up your jock... stop costing us games. I did enjoy watching MM waddle after the ref in protestation tho... that was amusing!

On two out of 3 of CM3 sack flags, he got flagged because he was stupid. He himself admitted the Chicago hit was a stupid penalty. The hit yesterday once again he got carried away, forgot or disregarded the rules, and got flagged. People are saying “he’s a 10 year vet you can’t expect him to change”.... actually.... yes you can. They used to say the same thing about players who habitually lowered their head and led with their helmets while tackling. Noe it’s “our guy” who’s having a hard time conforming. At the end of the day, Clay Mathews has to start playing according to the rules established by the owners (and explained and coached in detail during the off season), or he needs to retire... his public statements of confusion and dismay are going to do about as much good as people wailing and gnashing teeth here (or bidding farewell to football LOL). At the end of the day, the Green Bay Packers lost to a team not expected to make the playoffs... by TWO TOUCHDOWNS.... hopefully going forward they are focusing on things they can control rather than lamenting new rules ownership (including their own) put in place.

You're ****ing joking, right??? I don't care if rules were implemented this season making a textbook tackle for a sack illegal for some stupid reason. Matthews made a stupid play vs. the Bears but to blame anyone else than the league for him getting a flag vs. Minnesota and Washington is ridiculous.

Clay Matthews has made an impact play at a big moment in each of the first 3 games.

Unfortunately all three plays have negatively affected the Packers.

With all the roughing the passer BS The rules committee will have to let New York review it, at the next meeting.....
In the NBA they review technical fouls for the severity. Then determine free throws and if flagrant player is ejected. The NFL could do the same.

Oh yes. Would love to see Clay at the free throw line! He methodically whips his long wet blonde hair back as he bounces the ball hard at the free throw line, then decides "F this!" and slam dunks the ball as the glass backboard shatters and rains down on him.

I am of the opinion that the NFL has seriously got this equation so wrong. They are set to lose so much more in viewership than they are in getting sued by injured quarterbacks, by allowing this penalty madness to continue.

The Steelers vs Bucks MNF game was unwatchable with about 18 penalties on the Steelers including 5-6 roughing the passer calls. I think they had 4 in the first half alone. Maybe it’s because they got to the QB a lot but some of these calls were pretty soft too. The one where McCoy pulls up and still gets flagged was a joke.

At this point I feel sorry for Clay, but at the end of the day our secondary got torched badly and we had costly 5 yard OL penalties and way too many drops and this is what cost us the game. Not the hit by CMIII. Again, I don’t expect he will get fined. They may use this one as evidence of what not to do. But clearly last week was a legal hit.

BUT what ****** me off the most is there where 8-9 worse body weight sacks and late hits on Sunday that were not flagged at all. And what Barr did you too Rodgers after taking two steps and teeing off has always been a RTP penalty.

I hate to say this but it’s time to make all subjective penalties reviewable. Heck games already take 3 hours so who cares if they take 3.5! I just want to watch a game outcome not decided by refereeing for a change.

While the league could make roughing the passer calls reviewable it seems that wouldn't change anything as they agreed with both fouls on Matthews.
That doesn't necessarily mean the RP calls wouldn't have been reversed during the course of the game. Remember, that review has to be done pretty quick. I believe "the league" weighing in hours or days after the game is over, is just a very heavily talked about and calculated reaction to any controversial situation that occurred in a game, probably coming from a group that includes attorneys .

Rule 12, Article 9, Section B: https://operations.nfl.com/the-rules/2018-nfl-rulebook/#article-9.-roughing-the-passer
When tackling a passer who is in a defenseless posture (e.g., during or just after throwing a pass), a defensive player must not unnecessarily or violently throw him down or land on top of him with all or most of the defender’s weight. Instead, the defensive player must strive to wrap up the passer with the defensive player’s arms and not land on the passer with all or most of his body weight.
This was in the post-game discussions but worth exploring again. When people say that Clay definitely committed a foul against Washington, I don't agree. The language above does not say that a defensive player must not land on top of a defenseless player with all or most of his weight. It says that he must not unnecessarily or violently do so. In addition, it says that the defensive player must strive to not land on the passer with all or most of his body weight, it doesn't say that it is against the rules to do so.

There was a time when a QB could look like this, go back into the game and snarl at the defense. But now we have....millennial football.

The league actually tweeted during the game vs. Washington that it was the correct call to flag Matthews for roughing Smith.

....which I think is a perfect example of how the league recognizes that most fans and media don't understand the new application of the rule and simultaneously disagree with it. I can't remember the NFL previously tweeting out the confirmation of a call during the game. Rightly so, they are hyper-sensitive about this issue. Unfortunately they are out of tune with their fan base and players.

The NFL wants to keep its star quarterbacks from getting injured. That sounds good on the surface, but the problem is that the league is compromising the integrity of the game for the almighty dollar. Because they don't want revenue to fall when fans can't watch their starting quarterbacks.

The quarterbacks are even against this, probably because they feel embarrassed about being protected so much, and because other players might resent them because they are not being similarly protected.

Since week 4 started without an announcement, I'm going to assume the answer to the thread title is NO.

Yes.....but you may want to stay tuned and keep this thread open, still plenty of games for Clay to play in and get suspended for such things as "illegal whipping of his hair" or "bad acting in Commercials".

My guess is they're not going to fine or suspend him, they're going to keep torturing him by throwing the flag on him every week. They've decided to make him the poster boy for roughing the passer. What a great season.
