What are our options? Yell and scream on chat boards? Turn in our long awaited for season tickets? Picket Lombardi avenue in waves of mass protest? Shoot Ted's dog (IDK if he has one)? Just because I choose to not do any of them does not mean I need to sit in my own funk and stew about it.

We could declare international Thompson free agent signing day and have a million Fan march in DC carrying inane signs. ;)

Old Ted would need to darn near have an ****** about a player to spend Day 1 money on a free agent. I just don't see it with any of the available CBs. Rightly so, I don't ever think that landing the top FA in today's NFL is a recipe for success. The Packers will not pay a premium for players merely because other teams are interested. We don't get into bidding wars. It sacrifices the future for a chance at short term success.

Therefore one needs to be realistic about kicking the tires on the next set of available players. House is on that list. Frankly it's what many on here were all talking about after the season, getting a decent veteran in here that could mentor the young CBs. What better than someone who actually already knows Capers system, and at this point in his career, is probably appreciative of what it did for his career?

It's possible to significantly improve by spending a lot of money in free agency, just take a look at the Giants last season.

The Packers need a shutdown cornerback not a decent player at the position. There's absolutely no reason not to spend the $9 million the team saved by releasing Shields on a veteran cornerback.

curious as to what Matthews rated.

PFF ranked Matthews as the 96th best edge defender last season.

Yea being the 96th best edge rusher making 16 mil isn't going to cut it. Maybe they should try moving him back to the left side where he's going against right tackles vs left tackles... and see if that sparks something. The left tackle is usually your best pass protector so it may help him gain some confidence done more effective not going against those guy's.
