Bears cut Desmond Trufant. I havent followed him. Is he still good? he was big couple years ago but thats all I know. Also his das died recently and he wasnt there in camp so the Bears cut him. Kind of a **** move

I was listening to Hub Arkush on WSCR last night. This was expected. He's not ready to come back to the team so they released him to clear him off the 53. He is now a free agent* but expected to come back to the Bears when he's ready to play again.

*he is a vested veteran and not subject to waivers.

Somehow I'm sure that's not true
A simple search in the interwebs says otherwise.

"In today's NFL, most teams use their punter as a holder. New England Patriots' head coach Bill Belichick explained that punters are generally holders for the reason that punters and kickers usually have more time together to game plan, watch film, and are able to have more reps during practice than a player who has to play another position."

It's pretty rare for backup quarterbacks to be the regular holder on kicks. The reason is practice time.

Your backup QB is sitting with the offense during practice. He's probably listening to play calls, taking his 2-5 snaps, generally being a backup quarterback.

Meanwhile, the specialist can spend the whole week doing nothing but snap-hold-kick. AND the punter HAS to handle long snaps for punting, so he's probably the most practiced at fielding them. (I suppose this isn't technically true, but I'd love to see the guy who can take a snap from under center, drop back, and then punt well. :) )

Hmm ok, well I stand corrected for that one. But I still would have Benkert hold that ball and have a high likelihood of completing fake FGs

Are we completely positive we are not already at 53 on the roster?

If it is a trick play then the punter will practice it enough to be efficient at it. They usually only have one read anyway and if that is a bust they chuck it out of bounds. The fake extra point went away when they moved the extra point back, so if you are going for it teams just go for two. There's really no need for a third QB anymore, especially with the practice squads. They need that roster spot for other positions. The one thing of it all is that I'm not sure your hang up on Benkert.

back up QB's don't hold anymore really and Benkert was not going to be our back up. If he wasn't going to the back up and we decided to have 3 active game day QB's so one could be our holder, that would have been a monumental mistake

Harris was on the official roster entering the day and has not been declared cut. presently we sit at...no doubt Rams and us might have decided to initiate trade post 53 man lock...but that would make Rams have to eat a 53 spot on a second punter so I doubt it....this all seems crazy.

Current Packers Roster (54/53)

QB: Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love (2)

RB: Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon, Kylin Hill (3)

WR: Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb, Amari Rodgers, Malik Taylor (6)

TE: Robert Tonyan, Marcedes Lewis, Josiah Deguara, Dominique Dafney (4)

OL: Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, Royce Newman, Billy Turner, Lucas Patrick, Jon Runyan, Dennis Kelly, Yosuah Nijman, Jake Hanson (9)

DL: Kenny Clark, Kingsley Keke, Dean Lowry, TJ Slaton, Jack Heflin, Tyler Lancaster (6)

OLB: Za’Darius Smith, Preston Smith, Rashan Gary, Jonathan Garvin, Chauncey Rivers, (5)

ILB: De’Vondre Campbell, Krys Barnes, Oren Burks, Ty Summers, Isaiah McDuffie, De’Jon Harris (6)

CB: Jaire Alexander, Kevin King, Eric Stokes, Chandon Sullivan, Isaac Yiadom, Shemar Jean-Charles (6)

SAF: Darnell Savage, Adrian Amos, Henry Black, Vernon Scott (4)

K: Mason Crosby (1)

P: JK Scott (1) *The trade will clearly change this.

LS: Hunter Bradley (1)

PUP: OL David Bakhtiari

SUS: TE Jace Sternberger

Because he trumps Summers and Lancaster in what he brings
Yeah, I just can't get onboard with that. Summers plays special teams and contributes that way. Lancaster contributes in the DT rotations (unfortunately). Benkert wouldn't even hold a clipboard. He would merely take up a roster spot for no reason. Hence the shift to only keeping two QB's. I'm not big on Summers or Lancaster either, but they contribute at least.

Did you guys see Hollman got cut from the Texans? Do we still get their draft pick for him?

How do you know it'll be punter? Does he have any experience in it?
Because he won the Golden Finger award as the best holder in the league! :roflmao:

I remember reading that typically the punter is the holder simply due to logistics of practicing. The kickers, punters and long snapper all practice together. So they can get the hold down to a science. Asking a backup QB to do it, doesn't make much sense, since he is off working with the offense. Bojorquez punted for the Bills for 3 years and was their holder. Just a matter of working with the LS and Crosby on timing.

I would have kept Uphoff, Gaines or Ento before Benkert really in this scenario.

Well fair enough, but I mean Ento and Yiadom (if not swapped on waivers)? I mean that scenario might be a tough sell.

As to Gaines or Uphoff, well yeah possibly. I'm fairly confident though that Amos and Savage stay healthy given their low injury history, and then Black/Scott got it pretty well stacked back there. At least in my time I've usually not seen safeties get injury riddled that much.
