Defensively, the most frustrating aspect of an overall decent performance was the Packers’ inability to have an answer for the Lions’ Marvin Jones. Jones hauled in six passes (out of eight targets) for 205 yards and two touchdowns. Jones averaged a ridiculous 34.2 yards per catch.

Why Green Bay defensive coordinator Dom Capers didn’t use double coverage against Jones is a mystery. He needed to have a safety over the top with a cornerback underneath. Instead, Capers never forced the Lions to look elsewhere to make plays.

I'm sure who that Chris Havel guy is, but he's not very accurate in that analysis.

Jones often did have two guys on him using a cover 2, but the corner frequently let him go early and/or the safety came over late.

Also, there was a deep safety on each of his two TDs. On the first one, both safeties jumped up to cover an the same receiver for some reason. I'll guess Brice was the one who messed that one up since Haha typically does well. On the second, Hyde was deep and for whatever reason stood in one place and let Jones run by without covering even anyone else.

He's also not at fault for Hawkins letting up and Randall falling over.

This author is jumping to conclusions based solely on the stats Jones had without actually looking at what happened.

I don't know that I've ever seen a team get burned over the middle as much and as consistently as this one.
Watched the game with some buddies , and one turned to me, laughed, and said" I'd call nothing but passes over the middle every play".

Are we forgetting that this defense was missing its top corner, a starting safety, star OLB, starting NT and starting DE? Also starting a rookie at ILB. Can we be realistic as far as expectations go?

How much of that happened after the 28 minute mark, when the Lions had 3 points?

So a D missing almost 1/2 of its starters played an incomplete game. Would have to think that's pretty par for the course outside of the holding the other team to 3 through 28 minutes part

Just heard MM say they had 9 rookies play at least double digit plays on Sunday. I wonder how many other teams playing 9 rookies that many plays on defense won last weekend?

I'm not quite sure why this guy continues to have a job.

This is another problem for me. Why is a team always considered a title contender having so much youth and inexperience on the field all the time?

We get to vote for the President which could be the most important job in America yet we don't get to vote for our head coaches and other staff.
Seems like that would be the way to do it.

Sunshine:

I have not forgotten that when all those guys you mentioned were on the field they let Blake Bortles torch them for 320 yards and we barely won. This pass defense sucks no matter who is on the field, people should come to terms with this fact.

Rehash. Yes, they were undermanned. Yes, they played an incomplete game, what seemed like two separate games. Why do you think that it should be considered normal for any team (fully healthy, down some starters, fully decimated) to play great for most of a half and then fall apart? If the injuries are the excuse, what did they do in the first 28 that they couldn't do in the last 32? That's my question.

Well, the most obvious element would be that no depth on the dline means that Dom needs to plan on his dlinemen having very little energy at the end of the game and therefore needs to give them additional help. Not having CM3 means that the OLBs are all playing more snaps than planned and they also get fatigued. As for the corners, maybe compensating for lack of depth elsewhere opened up holes in the defense; maybe the Lions offense made some halftime adjustments to take advantage of some things they noticed in the first half. One of the issues with so many players being out is that Capers doesn't have many players left to make adjustments with so, when the other team changes things up, he's got his hands tied.

Well, actually the Packers played six rookies for more than 10 snaps on defense, seven if you want to include Ringo.

The Packers didn´t enter this season planning on playing that many rookies on defense in week 3 but were forced to do so because of injuries to several key players.

There´s no doubt the pass defense has struggled so far but the unit has enough talent to improve over the course of this season.

I was just going by what he said, thought he said 13 rookies played, 9 on defense and played more than 10 snaps each

The giants will be tough, especially at wide out. Interesting to see what Capers comes up with and if he will make adjustments at halftime and/or during the game.

Not the point, Captain. There should have been some vets to call on even in that situation.
A third of the roster is UDFA's. If with out knowing the teams name, I told you team 'x' had so many rookies, UDFA's, and rookies playing so much in key situations, would you think team 'x' was A) a Super Bowl contender, or B) a team in rebuild mode.

Exactly, we made some mistakes, but the result is we won. At the same time we were able to get good regular season game film on how to counter this better next time and valuable regular season game experience for the young guys

While the Packers currently have 14 undrafted free agents on the roster only two of them are starting in Shields and Taylor. It´s no secret that I would like Thompson to be more active in veteran free agency but most teams in the league would have to play inexperienced players with five starters on a unit missing a game because of injury.

Ok, so who would you rather be the head coach for the Packers: Trump or Hillary?

I'm confused, I saw the thread title and assumed I was coming in here to vote on whether to fire Capers or not? :whistling:
