Seems the old thread is closed....

Blake Martinez is the ILB the Packers deserve — and the one they need right now

In five games, Martinez has played 78% of the team’s snaps on defense, good for fourth on the team. He’s on pace for 100 total tackles this season, something last done by a Packers linebacker in 2013, when A.J. Hawk eclipsed the mark. Martinez also has matched his TFL and sack totals from last season through just five games.

While Pro Football Focus has him graded as the sixth-best off-ball linebacker in the league, that site’s more valuable numbers are the more concrete analytics. Along those lines, Martinez has the highest run-stop percentage of any player at his position in the NFL. In other words, he makes a tackle for a stop on 14% of the running plays that take place when he is on the field.

He has definitely taken that next step. He has been a big reason why the Packers can play dime against the run without it being a total disaster.

Ryan stepped up his game last year and has now faded. Is one MLB designated as the playmaker and the other is in a complimentary role? Wonder what the defense would look like if they were both excelling.

The Packers would definitely lose speed by putting Martinez and Ryan on the field at the same time possibly resulting in the unit struggling to cover tight ends.

MEH - no Martinez is not a pro bowl caliber MLB, and neither was AJ Hawk. The other supporting cast on this D has a lot to do w 50's success.

He's been ok. Yes I believe one is the designated and on is a supporting MLB.

It could be worse
