Whether through the draft or FA there are "holes" that need filling, in order of importance (to me):
- CB's (2 - starter & #4 or #5 development guy) with speed!
- OLB's (3 - 2 starters & #3, #4, or 5) - CM3 isn't worth $15Mil, TT can do a lot with the $11Mil cap savings.
- OG - re-sign Lang to 3yr/$18Mil deal? - another OG in top 4 rounds of draft to develop.
- Re-sign Cook 3yr/$12Mil ($3Mil SB, back loaded salary in year 3 of $4Mil). Hoping Cajuste turns it on in '17!
- RB in round 4-5 (Clement, Conner, D. Smith)?
- 330+lbs NT for downs 1 & 2 ~ keep Daniels, Guion & Clark fresh(er) for 2nd & 3rd down pass rush.
- OT to fill backup role so Barclay signs elsewhere.
- Late round WR - tall, skinny with speed and gets "redshirted" on PS for a year before emerging.

Good run down. I would prefer those "holes" at CB and OLB be fill via the FA market. When you are picking in the back end of every round, its really hard to view draft picks as instant impact starters, which is what we need at CB and probably will need at OLB.

For what it is worth, PFT released their "Top 100 FA" list today.

4 Packers made the top 36:

Lang (19)
Perry (23)
Hyde (33)
Tretter ( 36)

9 Packers in all made the Top 100 list. 7 of those were Packer draft picks or UDFA signings.

Lacy (63), Cook (70), Peppers (82), Jones (95) and Elliott (97)

If both Lang and Perry are lost while holding onto Matthews for the full amount and TT doesnt get heavily involed in FA were screwed. Might be time to re-build.

It would take the draft of the ages to stay in the mix.

In case that happens, you may want to install this on your computer. :coffee:

Goodnight! If the Packers need to rebuild coming off 10-6 and an NFCCG appearance, then how many teams DON'T need to build? Like 4?

For a team that was in the NFCCG, there are a lot of holes to fill and needs to be addressed.
Looking at the opponents for next season, unless Thompson suddenly does a 180 and gets aggressive, I wouldn't be shocked to see this team drop to 8 or 9 wins and miss the playoffs.

We'll see. It would be the first time Thompson's Packers have missed the playoffs in 9 years... which is an oddly long success streak for a team that needs to rebuild. It's also an oddly long streak to have taken place under a GM who doesn't know how to tie his own shoes.

And......have averaged picking from the 26th-27th spot in the last 7 drafts.

None of which was said by me. And yes, we will see.

They averaged about 27 pts last year. If they can push that number to 33-34 which is close to there 2011 number with the defense shaping up the way I think it will then I think they will have a chance to keep streak. Gonna need Crosby to be clutch.

I think i know how Ted thinks at a time like this.

2011 was completely off the charts. I think it's unreasonable to expect to see that again.

Then it might be unreasonable to consider this a playoff team anymore with the direction of the defense. Obviously a lot of time for things to change but i have my reservations how it will end up.

The direction of the defense? Do you think it will be worse in 17 than it was last year?

Once again the Packers find themselves picking at the back end of every round (without trades). As we get ready to head into the Free Agency period, I hope the expectations for who they will get at #29 doesn't cloud their judgement as to what they actually need to improve the current defense. While we all hope they hit a homerun with the first pick, I wouldn't bank on whoever it is having an immediate impact.

This was a stark reminder of the players picked at #29 over the past 5 years, besides Harrison Smith, I'm not that wowed.

This site further extends the history of the #29 pick.

I think there is legitimate cause for concern that it will. It's been awhile since there was this many holes and question marks.

Gotta replace a no.1 corner and whether they keep Matthews or not(I expect they will at 15 mill) there gonna need some big help at OLB. I am at about 50/50 right now if Perry is even gonna stay. Then you got the Lang situation which could affect what they can do on defense. No.1 corner and the Edge are the two biggest money positions on defense. There are a lot of moving parts here with free agency to start in a week.

Then we got second year players that need to somehow get a lot better. As far as Randall/Rollins I hear optimism that Adams bounced back last year but that was a bit different IMO. I don't feel there are any potential "play makers" in the rest of the 15/16 defensive draft picks. I think Clark will become servicable. I definitely dont see anything to get to excited about here.

I feel were at a crossroads with this whole thing and TT holds the keys to what happens next. Will he just piece it together with draft picks or will he make some bigger moves in free agency? Time will tell but once again I have my reservations.

Have to agree with you on our defense probably being in the worst shape personnel wise that it has been in for quite awhile. This condition could get even worse, depending on who we are able to resign. Every year since our SB victory there have been some needs, but not quite the glaring needs of both starters and depth that it currently has. It took how many years to address the needs at ILB and I am not so convinced that position is better than average either.

Time for TT to get busy in Free Agency and I don't think that necessarily has to be high priced guys, with maybe the exception of CB. If he sits on is hands and expects to improve the defense via the draft and UDFA's, 2017 could be a struggle on defense.

Were not really any better at ILB and now were stuck with the guys they have. Joe Thomas might be the best of the bunch(UDFA). I like Kentrel Brice as a reserve in the secondary(UDFA). I guess you could say Lowry showed some flashes up front. Other then that "The shelves are empty" on top of the lack of playmakers.

And yet I hear all this ******** that TT is just drafting so well and its so much better then the rest of the league and how could I even question it. Its just ridiculous.

I am at the point if they lose Perry then watch out.

Come in off of the ledge, brandon2348... it's warm and safe in here. ;) TT hasn't made any moves, yet, and is busy for the next week at the Combine in Indy.

The D personnel/talent won't look nearly as bad once he's done with his usual FA wheeling & dealing and the draft. (damn, even I laughed as I typed FA wheeling & dealing). I'm not expecting the D to quickly become the team's strength but he can't possibly leave it as bad as it appears right now.

Enjoy the combine and free agency, there's always hope (until Sept. 3rd).

Thompson, prior to other teams poaching his front office staff, built a strong core on this team that's slowly deteriorated over time. Rodgers is enough to keep the Packers in contention pretty much every year. Thompson is still pretty good at drafting on offense but the defense lacks playmakers pretty much everywhere.

This is my hope and expectation as well. But I understand my own and others nervousness, when you have to start connecting the words "Ted Thompson" to "FA wheeling and dealing".
