Michael is just a guy. He has flashes, but you have to consider why he's been on three teams and the Packer were able to pick him up mid-season off of waivers.
The highlighted sentiment needs to be repeated endlessly in every "why didn't TT get this FA CB at midseason" thread.

I love Montgomery and what he brings to the position, but what is the precedent of a wide receiver successfully transitioning to running back? And I'm not talking about a guy switching positions before being drafted, I'm talking about a guy drafted as wide receiver and making the switch in his second NFL season. Is Montgomery a 100 touch/year guy? 200 touches/year? 300 touches/year? 400 touches/year? There are a lot of unknowns to go into the 2017 season with Montgomery as the only option on the team.

Eddie Lacy followed his fat season with an injury season. Lacy is two full season removed from putting together a solid, full season of running the football. Team friendly contract or not, is he worth bringing back? Plus Lacy is the kind of guy who needs 20 carries to use his big body to wear down a defense. Will he ever get 20 carries again with the increased focus on the pass game and Montgomery's new role?

Michael is just a guy. He has flashes, but you have to consider why he's been on three teams and the Packer were able to pick him up mid-season off of waivers.

The solution could/should come in the draft. This is where free agency comes into play. If the Packers sign a starting corner, all of a sudden corner is an absolute Round One need. Also, don't forget that some of the best running backs in the league weren't first round picks. David Johnson, Jordan Howard, anybody playing on the Falcons or Patriots were later round picks.

Don't get me wrong, I am fully aware of the question marks regarding Monty becoming a full time RB. Only time will tell. The first impression of him as an RB are promising, but I agree that he can't be expected to be the number one guy next year. He will need to bust through the ceiling in camp and next season to become a reliable main option. But have to be confident that he can build on it after a full offseason with the role.

As for Lacy, I have gone back and forth for a while with him. I also hear ya on the question marks with him coming back too. But then I look at the good amount of cap we have, and the emphasis on DEPTH for next season, and I say you give Lacy another shot at it IF he is looking in shape come March. He has played some good football when he is healthy. And if he gets back to that point and if he can stay there, then he is a fine option for this team. That's a big IF I know but he won't be the only guy here so another injury won't kill us.
I am not sure how far into rehab he is in and if he is back to work yet. If he is on the right track then a low risk high reward scenario makes sense imo. He will be on a Cap friendly prove it deal and will be part of a group of RBs.

Michael is another depth option too. Still very young. The guy has a lot of football left in him. He has shown flashes everywhere he has been. I don't think consistency is something that is impossible for him to find, he's got upside. Don't anticipate him to be on a cap straining deal either. So why not keep him around to fight it out. Depth is key.

Then the draft. I would love to draft a guy early. I wish we could. Like you said, we probably can if a CB and ILB or OLB are signed in Free Agency.
I think we would be extremely lucky to see one of the big CBs signed and maybe a Zach Brown/Malcom smith LB. Can probably go McCaffrey if those signings are made and holes are filled. Will they though?
If only a CB is signed, then I still think a pass rusher or ILB are the main round one targets. Which is OK actually, cause round 3-5 will have plenty of promising RBs. Gallman, Chubb, Hill from Wyoming, Mcnichols from Boise state, Hunt from Toledo, Perine, Jamal Williams from BYU, Smith from Michigan.....all put together nice college careers. Serious talent in this years draft at RB.

Also think Zach Cunningham out of Vanderbilt is this years " we haven't had a legit ILB in years so maybe draft this guy TT cause he can probably be it"

But unfortunately, once again we have some more serious needs elsewhere so drafting a potential QB of the defense is impossible.
Cunningham is a heck of a player. But we're actually at the point that other defensive needs outweigh ILB by a healthy margin.

It's obvious to any who aren't Packer fans you need a new QB. Rodgers is washed up. Might as well draft a new one and hope he works out as well as Rodgers. :D

What would the VIkings give us to Rodgers? How about their DC plus free tickets to Packers games?
They used to be practically free. Before the new stadium I went for like 3 years in a row on the dirt cheap. Saw Favre break the TD record in that stadium 2 tickets for 50 bucks. I was always amazed how cheap the tickets were.

Another crazy thing to think about: The Packers could pick-up close to $3M of cap room by releasing James Starks! Easiest money the Packers will ever make.

How much do you guys see nick Perry asking for? Am I the only one skeptical about re-signing him? There a couple nice free agent options, I'm assuming he can't be asking close to what chandler jones would ask for, right?

Problem with Perry is that much of his production only came when matthews was playing; when Matthews was out and the defense focused on Perry, he disappeared. That would seem to indicate that he's not ready to be a primary threat on defense. But who knows, he's only been in the NFL for five years, maybe he's just a slow developer.

It's kind of odd that Perry has only produced decent numbers with Matthews playing as well as most teams have stopped to double team Clay for the majority of snaps.

The highlighted sentiment needs to be repeated endlessly in every "why didn't TT get this FA CB at midseason" thread.

You keep ignoring that a trade is another option to upgrade the roster.

While the Packers talent at inside linebacker is mediocre only the defense can get by with Ryan, Thomas and Martinez. The team is in dire need of an edge rusher though.

Gilmore from the Bills is available.

The Bills stillhave until March to re-sign him.

Let Lacy go and move on. Jamaal Williams is a great mid round option.

I read Perry market value is 5 year/ 42 Million / 8.5 Mill per year.

I'd say sign him for that and re-structure Clay for a 3 year with similar per year while there at it.

I am wildly impressed with Cordrea Tankersly out of Clemson.

You must be logged in to see this image or video!

-Big School with Big game experience
- Ideal size with good speed
- unreal ball skills. Amazing insticts when it comes to pass deflections and getting his head turned around.
- Extensive OUTSIDE experience. We need a guy who has excelled at a specific spot. No reason to draft a "he can maybe play on the outside but will probably be more fit for the slot/dime or nickel situations".....enough of that. I like King from Iowa but he is one of these guys.
- "Tankersley is a tough player who gets involved in the running game. He doesn’t shy away from contact and will fight to set the edge." He can tackle. The video showed a few nice examples of this.

http://withthefirstpick.com/2016/12/09/2017-nfl-draft-clemson-cordrea-tankersley-scouting-report/

Best thing about him is he will probably be available in the 2nd round.

I am also seeing Adoree Jackson hang around into the 20s in a few mocks. Seems like Humphrey Jones Tabor Wilson and Latiimore are getting favored over him.

Jackson is such an amazing athlete. His elite speed will instantly make him a serviceable NFL CB. Amazing athleticism is something that translates to the next level right away. We need a guy that can make a difference from day 1.

I would be shocked if that doesn't happen. No reason at all to keep him around. Like the guy but his days in GB should be over, and I think they will be.

Yea Williams is a beast. I also like Joe Williams from Utah. An under the radar guy, might even be an UDFA.

Check out this monster game @ UCLA.

That's a defense with Takkarist Mcklinley and Eddie Vanderdoes, two highly rated front 7 prospects.

Both would be great additions to one of the big Cbs if we sign em, Jackson would be great to add to Trumaine Johnson and Tankersley would be great to add to Stephon Gilmore.

He was talking about Jamaal Williams from BYU, while that is Joe Williams of Utah. Just heading off the confusion.
