I love Montgomery and what he brings to the position, but what is the precedent of a wide receiver successfully transitioning to running back? And I'm not talking about a guy switching positions before being drafted, I'm talking about a guy drafted as wide receiver and making the switch in his second NFL season. Is Montgomery a 100 touch/year guy? 200 touches/year? 300 touches/year? 400 touches/year? There are a lot of unknowns to go into the 2017 season with Montgomery as the only option on the team.
Eddie Lacy followed his fat season with an injury season. Lacy is two full season removed from putting together a solid, full season of running the football. Team friendly contract or not, is he worth bringing back? Plus Lacy is the kind of guy who needs 20 carries to use his big body to wear down a defense. Will he ever get 20 carries again with the increased focus on the pass game and Montgomery's new role?
Michael is just a guy. He has flashes, but you have to consider why he's been on three teams and the Packer were able to pick him up mid-season off of waivers.
The solution could/should come in the draft. This is where free agency comes into play. If the Packers sign a starting corner, all of a sudden corner is an absolute Round One need. Also, don't forget that some of the best running backs in the league weren't first round picks. David Johnson, Jordan Howard, anybody playing on the Falcons or Patriots were later round picks.
Don't get me wrong, I am fully aware of the question marks regarding Monty becoming a full time RB. Only time will tell. The first impression of him as an RB are promising, but I agree that he can't be expected to be the number one guy next year. He will need to bust through the ceiling in camp and next season to become a reliable main option. But have to be confident that he can build on it after a full offseason with the role.
As for Lacy, I have gone back and forth for a while with him. I also hear ya on the question marks with him coming back too. But then I look at the good amount of cap we have, and the emphasis on DEPTH for next season, and I say you give Lacy another shot at it IF he is looking in shape come March. He has played some good football when he is healthy. And if he gets back to that point and if he can stay there, then he is a fine option for this team. That's a big IF I know but he won't be the only guy here so another injury won't kill us.
I am not sure how far into rehab he is in and if he is back to work yet. If he is on the right track then a low risk high reward scenario makes sense imo. He will be on a Cap friendly prove it deal and will be part of a group of RBs.
Michael is another depth option too. Still very young. The guy has a lot of football left in him. He has shown flashes everywhere he has been. I don't think consistency is something that is impossible for him to find, he's got upside. Don't anticipate him to be on a cap straining deal either. So why not keep him around to fight it out. Depth is key.
Then the draft. I would love to draft a guy early. I wish we could. Like you said, we probably can if a CB and ILB or OLB are signed in Free Agency.
I think we would be extremely lucky to see one of the big CBs signed and maybe a Zach Brown/Malcom smith LB. Can probably go McCaffrey if those signings are made and holes are filled. Will they though?
If only a CB is signed, then I still think a pass rusher or ILB are the main round one targets. Which is OK actually, cause round 3-5 will have plenty of promising RBs. Gallman, Chubb, Hill from Wyoming, Mcnichols from Boise state, Hunt from Toledo, Perine, Jamal Williams from BYU, Smith from Michigan.....all put together nice college careers. Serious talent in this years draft at RB.
