According to the radio this morning.

I tell you guys, this is one of my biggest worries of the off season. Our options at kicker are dwindling. It doesn't matter how good our D or O is in 2006 if we don't have a good kicker. At least 4-5 games comes down to a key fieldgoal whether it be at the end of the game or during the game.

Also, not having a good kicker on kickoffs, whether it goes into the endzone all the time or not, is important. Bad hangtime and really short kicks will kill us most of the time.

I am worried. There is no reason why we shouldn't have out bid for Viniatieri or resigned Ryan. No reason at all.

did you ever think they didn't want to sign here...you could kick in a dome in indy, off of a carpet in dallas, or a frozen grass field in wisconsin...these two guys could be the first kickers to go to the hall of fame in a while, maybe they weren't exactly concerned with coming to green bay out of the goodness of their hearts

Did the Vikings and Colts outbid the Packers for Ryan Longwell or Viniatieri for their services? They may not have done so If you noticed both kickers have been around for awhile and are in their thirties. Both the Vikings and the Colts have domes. I think it was extremely attractive to older kickers to kick in a dome rather than kicking in extremely difficult Lambeau Field especially in wintery conditions and bad wind conditions.

Both Longwell & Viniatieri will see their FG Accuracy & distance improve, because of kicking many more field goals in their home dome. And a Kicker in dome can add a few more years to his career.

As far as, Vanderjagt kicked in the dome at Indy and is not a very good kick off guy, I don't think he was kicking off for the Colts last year. Do the Packer also want to reserve another spot on the roster for Kick off specialist, as well as, a FG kicker if they got Vanderjagt? Do the Packers want a dome FG kicker? I don't think so. Dallas which has warmer climate than GB and Dallas is building a new stadium, which probably will have movable roof which would be more attractive to Vanderjagt than GB.

It wasn't a big surprise to me that any one of these three kickers were not signed by the Packers. Green Bay will signed a FG Kicker! Who? Your guess is good as mine. We will just have to wait and find out.

PWT36,

Of course we will sign a FG kicker, what I am concerned about is the quality. The Fit will hit the Shan if we draft a FG kicker in the higher rounds. If we do he better be worth it. If we draft a kicker in the lower rounds, its a crap shoot (the same goes for finding a young no name free agent kicker).

It's all a "crapshoot"!
Brett Favre was a crapshoot.
Drafting Bart Starr in the 17th round was a crapshoot.
Drafting Tony Mandarich was a crapshoot.
Chester Marcol (the Polish Prince) was a crapshoot coming from one of the smallest colleges in Michigan.
And on and on and on, any way you get the picture.

Sometimes some of us old guys start rambling.

Right Cheesey! LOL!

He can hold too!!!!!

Guys relax....it's a kicker we are talking about, not a football player. He will sign one....they grow on trees. What's next? Worry over who will stripe the field?

when you get a kicker, wouldn't u like to groom your own, especially in Lambeau's conditions....Longwell did it, Jacke did it.....veteran kickers would rather kick in a dome or warmer climate it's just something we have to deal with.....what I think should happen is that no kickers are going to be drafted....unless Atlanta takes a flyer on Huston in the 7th rd....keep an eye on Gaskowski (Memphis)....his delivery and understanding of wind makes him a key signing after the draft....when your a young kicker u are looking for a job, period. So situation does not matter, and we seem to be willing as an organization to outbid teams for rookie FA, by offering signing bonuses...If I recall Longwell wasn't a finished product when he kicked here his rookie year, and I was upset over the diminished talent, since we released Jacke...example the game winning chip shot Longwell missed against the Eagles....and that year we still made the SB...obviously the expectations are alot less now, so I figured its the perfect situation for the Packers to take the time and let Gaskowski develop, like we did for Longwell....

Jan Stenerud, who was born November 26, 1942, in Fetsund, Norway, was an outstanding ski jumper who attended Montana State on a skiing scholarship. Late in his sophomore year, Stenerud was spotted kicking a football by the college's baseball coach who relayed the news of the Norwegian's abilities to the football coach.

For the next two years, he starred on the varsity football team with a then-record 59-yard field goal and 82 points scored as a senior. The Kansas City Chiefs were so impressed that they drafted Stenerud in the third round of the AFL's 1966 future draft.

The 6-2, 187-pound Stenerud excelled for 19 seasons and 263 games in pro football. He never missed a game because of injury or illness. He kicked for the Chiefs for 13 years from 1967 until 1979 but was released in the summer of 1980. Three months later, he signed a free agent contract with the Green Bay Packers, with whom he stayed with for four seasons. In 1984, the Packers traded Stenerud to the Minnesota Vikings for a seventh-round draft choice. He retired after the 1985 season.
