First off, thanks for doing a job that I doubt 95% of the population would want. My god-son/nephew is a Wisconsin State Trooper doing I-94 detail - first thing I think of when stories like this hit the news. It takes a special breed to even WANT to be a cop, they're not always great characteristics but they're necessary given that these guys have to deal with the dregs of society and the next stop is the Church Lady. Thing is that even the Church Lady owns a gun in this society - I don't blame these guys for one minute when you know full damn well that regardless how the situation is handled, you're going to be presented as the bad guy. You may as well LIVE to talk about it. Yeah ... guys like Hill. Morons who suddenly come into a windfall and OF COURSE run out an buy a high performance vehicle and test its limits in public... then ... acts like the A-hole that has proven himself to be and suddenly HE's the persecuted one ... and, we all know how the news sites and all of the 40 phone cams are going to present the entire encounter. ...and there'll be news stories with crying women saying "He's a good boy and we want justice" ... justice which usually involves dollar signs. El Guapo's post above is a good one. Fact is, law enforcement cannot know exactly who or what is sitting behind that steering wheel and believe it, each encounter HAS to be treated as a potential life threatening person. I was nailed about 6 months ago in a notorious "gotcha" school zone - one that everyone in Winnebago County, Wisconsin KNOWS is a revenue generator for the County, and yet, there i was, not paying attention to where I was on my way to work, already planning my day and the sheer hell that was waiting for me and I got tagged. I hadn't had a moving violation since 1988 and should have just stayed on Hwy 41 that morning, but no... had to take the scenic route along Hwy 45. Lights went on and I'm thinking "what the hell??", but I pulled over. Shut the car off and put the keys on the dash. My black SUV has the dark tinted windows and all that - and even on that type of highway, I could sense the cop's hesitance (for lack of better word). When he told me why I was pulled over - I knew I was pretty much F'd and would paying a hefty fine. The money didn't tick me off as the knowledge of my clean driving record and insurance scrutiny did. I had it coming and knew full-well I had it coming. As we were shootin' the sh*t, I mentioned that I'm going to get a lot of crap from people and he replied that I'd had a pretty good run of luck since '88 - gee thanks Officer - anyway, him reducing the citation saved me 3 driving points. Anyone ever seen the Kevin Hart video on how black men should act when pulled over? It's funny but on the same note accurate. Not just for black guys driving, but, for all of us.
