and i'm sick of people not being able to take into account EVERYTHING that happens in football. So they cut someone else and bring in your "established impact player" like everyone clamors for every single ******* year. I still thank God we never signed a guy like Rolando McClain a few years ago or and watch guys like Daniels and BahkT go somewhere else because we don't have the money to extend them. So they sign this impact player and he ends up injured and inactive for much of the year like Rollins, or has in season surgery like Randall. You tell me what impact he has.

It takes some luck in this league, we haven't had it back there this year. and still, June, July, August, and into September, everyone thought DB was the strongest position on the team.

If we had even an "average" D we would be favored. What's on the field ( Minus Matthews, Daniels, Ha Ha, ) isn't good enough. Maybe Murphy & company aren't fed up with the D costing us playoff games, fans sure are. I guarantee Rodgers is too.

No we wouldn't. They just lit up the Seahawks, and they aren't an "average" D Lit them ****ing up like a christmas tree. and their offense has produced more all year, and they're at home. We wouldn't be favored. and you'd still have something to complain about.

The Seahawks defense significantly regressed after losing Earl Thomas late in the season. Seattle allowed an average of 15 points with him in the lineup over the first 12 games and 23.3 the rest of the way.

I think fans get too emotional and don't actually look at facts. I guarantee that the front office and players understand that when a team is starting their fourth and fifth options at corner, they understand the defense having problems. If anything I think the defense has actually performed remarkably well considering all the injuries.

But fans like to claim "next man up", like that actually magically makes Ladarius Gunter as good as Shields and turns Kentrell Brice into Morgan Burnett.

The front office of a Super Bowl contender should react once they realize a position group, which entering the season was perceived as a strength, struggling because of various reasons and not stand pat and hope it will work out on its own.

well, they stood pat at 4-6 when everyone else was ready to blow it all up and start over, and look where they are. They believe in themselves and the work they do. Can't say I blame them. Regardless of how this seasons ends, their belief and work is what got them here. The fans would have had us with 8 wins or less and their decisions from 3-4 years ago would probably see us without one of the best left tackles in the future and no money to re-sign Daniels this year either.

They should have definitely seen going 5 and 6 deep at DB for most of the season. Most definitely had plans to lose 2 starting OLB's and both starting ILB's for stretches during the year, and be without them a lot during games despite being active because of those injuries as well. I'm not even going to get into the offense, because they seem to be doing pretty well too, despite having troubles and overcoming adversity.

Ok, so what were the team's options? It's not like really good corners are just available for the taking; most teams don't just give up good starting corners for nothing and the Packers don't really have a ton of trade assets; and the Packers didn't need just ONE starting corner, the team needs TWO starting corners. There's just no way to trade for those caliber of players during the season and those guys aren't just sitting on the couch at home.

Saying the team "should have done something" is real easy when you're not actually on the hook for doing something.

The Packers selectively using free agency to address obvious positions of need wouldn´t have resulted in the team not being able to re-sign Bakhtiari or Daniels. Once again, nobody is blaming the front office for several players on defense getting injured but for standing pat instead of upgrading the cornerback position once it became abundantly clear it was in dire need of an upgrade. It´s possible that will result in another year passing without the Packers winning their 14th title.

I know it´s blasphemy even talking about it with Thompson supporters but go figure it´s possible to trade draft picks. If the Packers had decided to acquire a rental player they would have even been able to get a compensatory pick in return. I´m absolutely convinced some teams out of the playoff picture by the time the deadline rolled around would have been interested in a trade with the Packers.

I think I sit somewhere in the middle of these two positions. However, I think that when a team is sitting on the verge of a chance at another championship, that is the time to make a move. Consider How great the overall roster was back in 1996... that did not stop Wolf from going out and grabbing Andre Rison to shore up the wide receiver position for the final stretch. Sometimes it only takes a short term player to make the difference.

He has plenty of faults, but being absolutely certain and convinced of something one has absolutely zero knowledge in is just short sighted and disrespectful to a guy that has done more in the past hour for this football team than any of us have in our entire lives.

There's a difference between saying that our lack of quality and healthy dbs is hurting us, and I wish he would have gotten someone in here is different than the arguements some have put forth.

It recognizes the need for one, it also recognizes the rarity of in season trades for any player of note. I don't think just any old vet would have done much for this team. At the time the only guy needing replacement was Sam, and you weren't going to get one of him.

As it turns out, with how the rest have been repeatedly injured we probably could have used someone. But none of us know what the thoughts of the staff and front office were at the time. Since none were put in IR, I'm guessing they expected them back and healthy. It didn't turn out that way.

And now going into this game were looking at being down a starting safety and a couple more guys on offense who McCarthy said would not play if this was the regular season. Great news, but of course, this is all Teds fault lol

I think that the difference is that TT prefers to let his "unknown" players, the newly drafted and undrafted free agents step in and save the cap space. This year Geronimo Allison took Andre Rison's role from 1996. I'm not saying that it's right or wrong, but just TT's way. Rison was a one-year rental as he signed with the Chiefs the next season. We should have Allison for years to come. That might factor into TT's reluctance, same with CB. I have no way of knowing since he's notoriously tight lipped.

Actually, here's the first article that popped up when I typed in "andre rison 1996 packers"
Desperate teams tend to do desperate things.

Like signing wide receiver Andre Rison.

Desperate is about the best description of the Green Bay Packers' decision to claim Rison off waivers after he was cut loose by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

It was an obvious overreaction to the team's disappointing loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night.

I recommend reading the whole article. Obviously desperate panned out.

I agree that that is Thompson's way.... however at least to the scope of my previous post... In my opinion it is the wrong way lol.

I didn't see any DB with some baggage, but talent cut and available for us like Rison was, to pick up this year. The names kicked around were of guys that have been kicked by every team in the league and have no use for anymore. and if Wolf's way is the right way, he still only won, 1. and he says himself, he got out of the game because he no longer could just find guys they could use, he had to find out if they could afford him first.

Yet you would never admit Thompson being wrong about anything.

It's amazing that several posters around here give credit to TT solely for trying and working hard while failing to upgrade a position in dire need of an upgrade.

Interestingly I haven't seen the same sentiment for players who tried to tackle a runner or catch a ball but failed to do so. Maybe we should praise them for attempting to make a play as well.

The Browns reportedly were shopping Joe Haden. Dee Milliner was a first round pick only four years ago and might have been able to provide the same impact as Rison did 20 years ago.

I can not like a decision, while still understanding WHY he made the one he did and still respect him as a GM that probably handles the vast majority of decisions better than the rest of his peers.

It's like looking at the Broncos and Elway. He's vastly superior to Ted according to some, yet his team caught some breaks, did win 1 super bowl and then didn't even make the playoffs this year. Why? They couldn't afford a QB for some reason? All I heard last year was how much better he was than Ted, yet here we are and they didn't even make it to week 16 in the playoff hunt let alone have the better part of a decade in the hunt.

While I think his decision was wrong I can't say I blame him either. Not getting one was certainly better than signing Brock back to the team.

I can not like only having 2 RB's going into the season, but can understand why. Because we had a FB they believed could do in a pinch. Something this staff has used before with success and they liked their FB. They also had a WR they could line up anywhere. I'd say it worked out OK.

I think the DB situation is just people wanting to no like him. I'm not that worried about it when we had a surprise like Gunter, 2 young and very promising guys like Rollins and Randall after their rookie seasons and shields. Plus Hyde who's proven his worth over the years. I like that group. WHat happens in a season happens, and it spares nobody. Like I said, replace our top 3 with Peterson, Norman, and Sherman. If their seasons go like ours have, what's the difference?

I don't think it's easy or likely to just go trade for a guy more than a quarter of the way into the season. Everybody always wants to see him "do something". Well life has taught me that when you've done your work, you're prepared and ready, sometimes just "doing something" when things aren't going well ends in disaster. when you fly by the seat of your pants, trying something is all you have. When you work as hard as these guys do, you trust your work. If there's a person that can do it, it's you, but i'm not going to go and look. But I'd doubt that an impact player for a team in the hunt is traded even once very 3 years halfway thru a season, let alone make it seem like all Ted had to do was go get one this year.

Trades of players are not common in this league. They're even more rare in season. They're even more rare concerning impact players to teams in the hunt for a Super Bowl. and if you want to liken it to someone "trying to make a tackle". yes, if the guy is playing on the opposite goalline covering a WR in the endzone and there's a tipped ball for an INT 7 yards behind the LOS and he has a half a field and 30 yard headstart on the defender and he recovers enough to trip him at the 3 but he still stumbles into the endzone for a pick 6, yes, I am going to praise the effort while being disappointed in the outcome. because that would be more akin to what is happening here.

The question isn't whether TT could have found a Rison at cb, the way Randall has played, anybody would have been an improvement with the exception of Rollins. Randall had the third worst qb rating out of 119 cb's in the league. Let that sink in. Throwing at him is nearly a guaranteed first down. Next man up is ok as long as the guy holds his own like Taylor. When players suck, they can't be allowed to destroy another season.

Exactly. In our secondary resides two of the worse corners in the league at defending the pass. The same two taken in rds 1 and 2 just one season ago. The guy that's starting in place of one of the two isn't that great either. This does not bode well for the future.. yet alone Sunday's game in Atlanta. You can sorta get away with it if you play guys like Brock Osweiller every week but this is the NFC. To get to the SB you're going to have to stop guys like Bree's, Ryan, Stafford, Prescott, Winston, Cousins, and Wilson from lighting up your secondary. Aaron Rodgers shouldn't have to score 30 a game.
