May I also say I think I share the sentiments in hoping Joe Philbin comes back to town. No he doesn't call plays but he did a large body of work with Mike McCarthy in building the offense and helping it to succeed and being a common factor in our most successful years. Right now, we're by no means unsalvageable, but I think we do need a little direction and I think Philbin might be able to bring some back to this team.

I don't mean to over simplify things, but in the last 2 games, look at sacks, hurries and hits on the QB (for and against) and you pretty much have the answers to our losses. Until we get an O line and a D line that can do what they are suppose to do, AR can't be AR and our DB's will continually get beat.

Yes OL has been a big reason, but AR has also been very hesitant on making quick throws. Instead he has held onto the ball, tried to evade the pass rush and gotten himself hit a lot due to our porous OL. It's party on AR too.

His hesitancy on making quick throws is mostly due to the fact that nobody is getting open when he is able to look down field and not scrambling around. The O-lines lack of being able to open holes for the run game is the second part of this. No running game allows the defense to not respect the line of scrimmage and devote its weapons to defending the pass.

Sorry, Packers O-line has sucked the last few games and I'm not going to blame Rodgers for that. Give him a running game and pass protection and you will see what he can do.

Recently, there have been more low snaps from center than usual in the shotgun. The time that Rodgers has to look and crouch down, then straighten up and find his targets may not seem like a big deal, but it's a negative.

Maybe the coaching staff should help out the offensive line by max protecting Rodgers on obvious passing downs.

I agree the OL has to be mostly blamed for Rodgers struggles but he has been uncharacteristically off on several throws partly missing wide open receivers.

Maybe just perception, but I can't recall any other season in which Rodgers lethal accuracy has been as off as it has been at times this season.

A lot of attention was give to the last offensive play of the Carolina game when Rodgers didn't see a wide open Cobb in the end zone, but that one play in a nutshell has been the problem on offense. Bulaga for whatever reason, steps back to try and block his man and immediately is going backwards, effectively shutting down the passing lane and forcing Rodgers off the route before he can see Cobb and release the ball. Rodgers turns to his left and knows he has no time and tosses a pass up in desperation. We all know Rodgers is not Brett Favre and hates to force a ball, so maybe the only thing you can hang on Rodgers at this point in the season is he isn't forcing things when they truly aren't there. But if he starts doing that and tosses some interceptions, where do we go next?

I wasn't even talking about that play but other ones when he had enough time to get rid of the ball but missed a wide open receiver.

BTW Rodgers mistead the defense on the last play at Carolina otherwise it would have been an easy completion to Cobb no matter what the OL did on that play.

LOL...just noticed we are in the "Capers thread" discussing Rodgers. Shows you even what a mess us fans are at trying to figure this team out. About the only thing I would agree on with as "being on AR" with all this, is that he is not himself with the final total product he is putting on the field. But it's pretty easy to see why, his confidence and ability to rely on his WR's and O-line have been under fire most of the season, started with the loss of Jordy. I think that frustration showed on the sidelines when he saw the replay of Cobb wide open on that play. So how does he get back to being himself? His O-line and WR's are going to have to play better and let him know, they have his back. But as of right now, he looks shell shocked and carrying a lot of weight on his shoulders for the teams success, too much to ask of one player when the other 21 around him aren't and that pressure has been snow balling all season.

I disagree, there are more problems with the offense than OTs taking a step back when pass blocking and Rodgers not forcing the ball. As we've talked about, it's Rodgers holding onto the ball too long. McGinn notes that in the first series at Carolina Rodgers held the ball for 6.6 seconds before getting sacked. That's not the OL's fault and while it may be the receivers not getting open enough there's no excuse for Rodgers taking a sack after that long. Rodgers has also been guilty of bypassing receivers open on shorter routes for a shot down the field. That's fine when the offense is humming along, but when they're struggling he has to adjust. We've talked about the offensive scheme not utilizing man-beater routes enough. We saw them line up trips to one side on a couple of occasions but not utilize its advantage. IOW, run the same kind of route Cobb and Jones ran on the goal line in the middle of the field - even have Rodgers roll out right. The middle of the OL - the "rock" of the OL since Linsley started at OC has been less than rock-worthy. IMO Linsley had his worst game at Carolina. In sum, I don't think that play represented a nutshell of the problems. Unfortunately the problems are more wide spread. The OL doesn't protect well, then it does and receivers don't get open. When they do, Rodgers' legendary accuracy evaporates, etc. It's almost a perfect storm of screw ups. The only constant has been the poor run blocking of late but that IMO is related to the other problems on O.

Maybe "nutshell" was too all encompassing of a word in describing that play. But if Bulaga doesn't step back as well as get pushed back, Rodgers continues to roll right, sees Cobb and has a chance for an easy touchdown. You are correct that there is a lot of blame to throw around to explain our offensive woes, but respectfully, IMO, it starts with the offensive line. Their play as a whole all season has been way to inconsistent to rely on, in both run blocking and pass protection. Which is the snowball effect that has Rodgers playing like his pants are on fire (perceived or actual) on most downs.

can we unlock the Fire Capers thread now? I have a feeling it'll heat up after the game Sunday.

Nobody is on the same page. But our QB, with one of the best arms in the history of the NFL, shouldn't have to have to scramble every play to feel safe or to extend it just to give the WRs a chance to get open. The staff should be embarrassed that they can't put such a great QB in a position to succeed.

I think they need to create plays where he gets rid of the ball quick. That's how the Patriots have been able to fix their offensive line issues. They have no bodies playing and theur offense isn't having any trouble scoring. Hence, they've adjusted to the hand they've been dealt. We are too damn stubborn and are asking players to play the plays instead of creating plays for the players strengths.

We need to fire Clements and Capers. I wish we had Jim Harbaugh and Josh McDaniels calling the plays. We really are collapsing aren't we? Fat boy Lacy nerds to be traded as well.

I agree, I see too many other teams doing more with less to accept the Jordy injury as a valid excuse. Injuries happen in the NFL, adapt and overcome. As long as #12 is on the field, this should be a top 10 offense.

I don't know what to say about the offensive line, but they're not as bad as people are making them out to be. Actually its a line that was really really good last year. So they're not going to be making any changes there. It's been a part of the problem, no doubt, but there's a lot more to it than the line.

They are asking the Oline to hold guys until plays develope. That is a recipe for disaster. Teams have adjusted to attack the middle of the line because that's how you get to Rodgers. If you go from the edge he still has room to step up or even escape and create plays. Honestly, the biggest dissapointment this year has been the entire coaching staff. They've allowed injuries to bring the team down, they are holding back players until injury is forcing them. They are asking young guys to step up and not creating plays to give them a chance to succeed.

We all could see Starks has been playing better and he would have a few good plays, then swap him out instead of letting him get hot. Janis has had some great plays and he's now keeping the bench warm. Abby hasn't been given a shot, not even returns, when Hyde looks slow and can't get anything going.

CBs will be getting dominated on games and they will not get any help to stop the bleading.

I think they think a little too high of themselves and are thinking" we are the packers, things will turn around" instead of actually doing something about it. It's the same **** and they expect different results.

It is the same line, and last year it wasn't till about week 6 or so, when they finally started playing up to par. and this year they are about what they started the last year as. They can play better. Will they? I don't know why, but they certainly look much worse than when they finished the 2nd half of last year.

The offensive line was amazing in pass protection last season, especially after Rodgers hurt his calf. There's no doubt they have regressed dramatically this season though. There's hope they can improve over the second half of the season as the talent is there.

I tend to think that while James Campen does a good job coaching up individual players that he's never been very good at running a unit.

I'm not sure what you mean by "running a unit" but the last half of last season, they were "handing guys off" to each other in the passing game and their run blocking was pretty good. So if the players have all of a sudden become bad, I guess Campen has all of a sudden forgot how he coached last season.
