Pettine sounds like a guy who is sometimes able to put together a good game plan that opponents have difficulty figuring out. But if his initial game plan sucks, he is unable to make in-game adjustments.

This is what worries me the most about Pettine after this particular game. It is one thing to get beat but it didnt seem like they made any changes to fix the probably. The second half defense should have been selling out for the run and daring the 49ers to beat us through the air. Instead we did the same thing with the exact same results - mostly on the same play

Considering the improvement in the defense this year, Pettine probably deserves another year. But really, it appears most of the improvement is due to the Smiths. But I'd keep him on a short leash. Something like this happens next year, he's gone.

And we can't depend on FAs to bail us out at every position, we need to draft well too. And develop.

Sometimes its not as easy as "Just fire him and replace him!!"

Who are we gonna get that is INSTANTLY better than Pettine? I see alot of GB fans wanting him gone.

I instantly agree that we need more speed on the D. We've been needing it for years, and we've been suffering from TT's drafts where he constantly got a bunch of PAC12 slow but "smart" players who did NOTHING.

We're still suffering for TT's sins and it's gonna take 2 more drafts/offseasons until we are able to completely remove that

Besides Z no one else stood out on the defense as being a physical player. Earlier in the season Amos was playing hard and hitting hard then it just died off.

Pettine's defense this season had very defined strengths and weaknesses.

His unit was great at creating pressure and creating turnovers. They were lousy at stopping the run and gave up too many chunk plays.

Here's my question to Pettine critics-- who are the players that he should be getting more out of?

Because from where I'm standing, looking at the personnel, it looks to me like he's gotten as much or more out of the guys he's been handed as one could expect. So if he's not doing his job, then who are the guys who ought to be playing better?

The question I have is what does it take to get canned? Petine's defense was completely destroyed in an NFCCG by historic margins. He gets outcoached and then as if nothing happened, 3 days later, Petine is back in 2020.
I know ILB and DT are a mess, but he failed to both prepare his defense and then make any meaningful adjustments in the game. What exactly was Petine doing both before and during the game because it looked like he had no clue.

I'd be interested to hear, from an X's and O's perspective, what he was doing wrong.

Only one team per conference gets to the Super Bowl, you can't fire every coordinator that doesn't make it. We made it further than 28 other teams. I get the bit about historic margins, but considering we were lacking talent at ILB, I think he should get the benefit of the doubt at least until we get that position shored up.

If Pettine goes, I just hope they don't seemingly pick a guy at random who has nothing impressive on his resume like they did with Mennenga.

Or like they did with MLF???

MLF probably knows he doesn't have unlimited good will. He didn't really improve from McCarthy's offense, other than running the ball more. Getting embarrassed in these big playoff games isn't a good look. He's also probably aware that McCarthy hung on to Capers too long.

MLF went 13-3 in his first season as a head coach and made it to the NFCCG. I think he feels pretty safe about his job security.

Your link went to a video of game replays and not an article about Pettine. I will have to go the the NFL webpage and find it later.

It should work now.

At CB, Alexander is great, the best corner on the team will be 37 next year, and King is far too up-and-down to be reliable. The team probably needs to sign at least one proven corner or else pray that Alexander & Williams can stay healthy all year.

The Packers pass defense should be fine moving forward. They will significantly have to improve their run unit though.

Pettine tried to stop the Niners run game but he lacked the personnel necessary to make it work. Gutekunst will have to provide him with more talent, otherwise a different defensive coordinator wouldn't make any difference either.

we were in a run stopping defense, and like others have pointed out, couldn't stop it. The DL has 1 stud and some guys. Our olb's are pass rush specialists, though they can hold an edge OK. Our ILB's are weak and were exploited. There was nobody coming up to make a stop besides safeties it seemed and that's not a recipe for success. Our ILB's were blocked and didn't put up much of a fight while doing so.

Sure I think Mike deserves some blame for the D being as anemic as ever, just with more flashy players. But I don’t think he deserves the full blame. I truly believe the scouts for the Packers don’t know how to scout a front 7 for a 3-4 Defense. For instance Kenny Clark should not be a NT, he’s better suited at DE where he can still rush the passer but also control the edge easier in run situations. As a NT you should more or less be there to take on 2 or more blocks while controlling the running lanes and I don’t know if Clark is suited for that based on his size. Also Blake Martinez I think would excel in a 4-3 offense, not that he doesn’t here, he makes a lot of tackles, but his playmaking ability is something to be desired. As for the Smiths, those two clearly are made for the 3-4 especially as a tandem. Ones more finesse and the other and sheer power and force. Honestly besides Tyler Lancaster I cant really name any DL, maybe Montarvious Adams, if we still even have him, but I have not seen enough of him ever to know if he has potential to be a solid NT in order to move Clark to the end.

I like the confidence but I'm not sure where it comes from. King has been very hit-or-miss (also injured often over his career), and Williams is getting on in years. Good pass defenses generally need at least one very good corner (check that box with Alexander) and two good corners (check one of those with Williams this year). I'm not sure the Packers will have those two good corners next year. Williams was VERY good in coverage but he's going to slow down at some point (I assume anyway) and King, well, if he's the second best corner on the team then the pass defense is going to be in trouble.

Understand, I'm not trying to say that the pass defense is going to be awful or anything, just that the team DOES need to find some young corners that can replace Williams/King if/when they decline. The run defense and TE coverage is obviously a bigger concern but the team doesn't appear to have anyone on the roster to replace Williams if he leaves this year nor do they have anyone that could become a more reliable #2 CB than King. I'm also not trying to say that King is terrible, he's a low-end starting #2 CB but the team could really use an improvement in that area, especially since the one knock you could maybe make against Alexander is his lack of height against the bigger receivers.

To sum up, run defense and TE coverage are the biggest concerns (better dlinemen and ILBs needed) but the Packers need some young corners to groom behind Williams and King.

If they did changes like to know what...MLF said seemed like in sh most game?

I pointed out b4 that KC Def went to goal line situations on short yardage..I don't recall GB doing that?
Or at least nothing that drastic.

Henry and Tenn never got anything going

Its funny that Kings perception by the fans is so bad because when compared to Jaire, the stats are nearly identical in every metric. King has more interceptions cuz Jaire seems to be unable to catch them. Both were highly inconsistent in the season but King has the upper hand on Interceptions, TDs allowed and QBR when targeted. jaire is more talented but King is extremely talented too. If they can be consistent for a whole season, GB has one hell of a CB tandem.
Also Chandon Sullivan looks really fricking good. He obviously didnt play as much as king and Jaire but only allowed a 22.6 QBR and 3.2 YPA and zero TDs. That is suprisingly good for someone coming outta nowhere. And Tramon plays insanely well too but is obviously a wildcard cuz of his age. cant do anything wrong with a cheap FA acquisition for depth and a 4-7 round pick but they are set at CB.

Same for the Safeties. One thing that is consistent for every DB is the dropped interceptions. I know you cant nail every play but several DBs have 3 dropped INTs or more which is insane. And that just shows how inconsistent they played. Long story short: The confidence in King and co. is justified.

In 2014..kyle shanahan was oc in Cleveland...Pettine was head coach? In practice, the offense would go against Pettine and his Def scheme..In short Kyle got irratated by his scheme ..so he started to figure out how to beat it.. by end of year he was

The defense wasn't anemic by any means as the unit finished ninth in points allowed this season. Unfortunately they matched up terribly with the Niners but I'm not sure Pettine could have done anything about it.

I agree that the Packers need to equivalently replace Williams if they decide to let him walk away in free agency but other than that the pass defense should be fine.

You have a very low opinion of the Mods......pmsl
Calm down turbo. I said that because it was an obvious situation in which the thread should have been moved or locked. And it was. I have no clue how you came to this conclusion. Smdh.

I'm not so sure that a DB heavy defense would be susceptible to Cook and the Vikings. Cook isn't exactly a power runner. Safeties can get him on the ground. He's more likely to juke than to truck. A heavy DB, light LB look might actually be better at defending him than the alternative.

But Pettine has stated openly that his defensive design is meant to promote pass defense, and that run defense is secondary. This is the correct philosophy. I know old school coaches will always say that defense starts with stopping the run, but that's not this league anymore. The Bears' running backs ran for 5.35 per carry last night and the offense was mostly useless for the majority of the game. It was Trubisky's wretched 4.9 YPA that sunk them.

Here are last year's PO teams in run defense ranked by yard per carry:

-Titans: 4T
-Chiefs: 23T
-Falcons: 16T
-Rams: 30T
-Jags: 23T
-Saints: 27T
-Bills: 23T
-Panthers: 10T
-Eagles: 6T
-Patriots: 30T
-Steelers: 27T
-Vikings: 5T

Average rank is 19th.

But I do think that Oren Burks will play a lot more as he gets healthy and the season progresses.

Missed on Burks.
