Toward the end of his broadcasting career, I remember some younger guy complaining about his prattling ... Listening to today's announcing crews, those were the good ol' days...

I remember Pat Summerall teaming with Madden. They were an amazing broadcast team. Madden the coach, and Summerall, the ex-player. Between them they knew the game inside and out.

Those who didn't like that combo obviously wanted nothing but homer broadcasters doing their games. These two gave everyone praise when they did well on the field, and sideline. A couple of exceptional talents.

I loved Madden, absolutely loved him. But Summerall stunk - made me sleepy. I ignored PS but got a lot of enjoyment out of the BOOMS and the circling of sweaty pants and funny anecdotes that Madden would throw in there...and he loved 4...and CHUCK CECIL!!!

Interesting - first "complaint" I've heard of Summerall but I do understand how he could come across as boring, especially when paired next to Johnny Goofball (I mean that in a good way). To me, Summerall's monotone voice of impending doom gave the broadcasts an "epic" feel like you were watching a world deathmatch championship. Plus it balanced out Madden's style perfectly and Summerall was able to reign Madden in on occasion when it was necessary...and did so flawlessly without anyone noticing.

There would be no Madden without Summerall and vice versa. That duo will NEVER be topped in sports

The play-by-play announcer is always more reserved than the color man.

Packers threw Hornung out of the booth in the 70's for swearing in disgust. When speaking of duos - it's Jim Irwin and Max McGee as #1 for me. I used to really like Mike Patrick too. Aikman and Buck make me want to vomit.

The "All Madden" documentary was great to watch if you haven't done it yet. Even Mrs. El Guapo got drawn into it, stopped what she was doing, and began watching.

I heard many people say that they didn't like Madden in his later years of broadcasting. I think some of them were sick of him gushing so much more over certain players. Others had gotten sick of Madden's antics, such as circling the steam or the turducken. I still enjoyed it all but I understand how some folks had just thought that those things had long ago run their course.

He was a great coach and made football more entertaining to watch. I appreciate what he did for the sport.

I used to listen via NFL to games on their radio app thing. I had a choice of home team road team or broadcast. Now I liked to listen to Packers radio team but also liked the broadcast team if Madden was on duty. so would swap between the two, I miss those days but waste of money now for me.

My only issue with Pat Summerall is that he drank his liver into submission, then somehow finagled his way up on the list to get a transplant. I bet there were some deserving people with liver disease that should have gotten one before someone who merely abused the crap out of his own. That said, I loved listening to Summerall call games.
