I believe that a lot of fans overestimate the distraction Guion's actions have caused for the Packers, especially considering all of it happened during the offseason.

Well see what happens but my main point here is I think the Packers value Guion more then some fans do. If Guion was a garbage player and provided no value he would be gone after this recent charge along with his history whether it happened offseason or not.

I like Guion. I think he is a good plugger. I hope he can turn it around.

Well, even if you don't like it there's no doubt that talented players receive more leeway from their teams than ones on the bubble.

Most recently, Makinton Dorleant after his bar altercation with Police in Iowa. Although the Packers said he failed his physical, you have to wonder about a player being cut in April over a failed physical.

It's probable Guion would have made the Packers roster if he had stayed out of trouble as he's a more talented player than the other defensive linemen at the bottom of the depth chart. I highly doubt the team will bring him back after his suspension if there aren't any injuries at the position early in the season though.

Football players are people too. They get born, die, have children, get arrested. You can't expect them to be perfect just like we are not perfect. Unfortunately football players are in the public spotlight and things that happen to them make headlines.

That is why they need to be better at staying out of the headlines. Tens of thousands of current, past, or future pro athletes do not make negative headlines ever. Shows that the hundreds that do are news.

Strangely, I`ve never been arrested. The guy is an idiot.

Price is one of the players on the bubble to make the roster. While he might surprise this season you're putting way too much stock into him playing 10 non-impact snaps last season as there's a distinct possibility he doesn't even make the roster.

I'm not counting on it but I'd love to see Price show enough that he essentially makes Guion irrelevant and expendable.

Given that all 32 teams passed on Price in the 2016 draft and he spent most of last season as an UDFA on the Packers practice squad, I'm not holding my breath that he will be an impact player, if he even makes the final 52. Now the homer side of me, wants to believe that someday he will be a Pro Bowler for the Packers. If Guion had stayed out of trouble, I would have considered him a much better option.

Teams passed because for some odd reason he played 3 years with a torn labrum he didn't fix until his senior season

If he turns into an UDFA Gem.....kudos for the Packers. I just hope they aren't relying on that to happen, I'm not.

Well, it seems like the Packers coaching staff didn't recognize Price's talent either.

they very well might release him theres just no urgency to make the decision until his 4 game suspension is up

Does anyone on here know what DL does I don't think so aDL is there to keep blockers off LB ,and rush the QB get him off his spot also bounce runs outside what part of this does guion do well I guess plug the hole but any fool can do that when he's in on passing downs does he rush the QB no ,so why not let a young guy get a shot Datone jones really never got a chance but you give lowery a shot and say how good he is sit down and watch the game he got sacks when he was put between to all pros Daniels and peppers hell I could've done that price outplayed lowery in preseason he also won the lineman challenge so why not give the guy fair shot

You gotta love those guys being new to a forum telling everyone he's the only one with a clue about the sport of football because others don't agree with his take on a player on the roster bubble.

That concept is fading. First, Capers has been playing more 3-4 under in the last couple of years where the DL plays 1-gap or 2-gap rather than mano a mano engage-and-plug. It's why they drafted a guy like Clark...they're looking for athleticism (and presumably a quick mind in terms of play recognition) over brute force. There's a lot more going on than keeping a clean path to the hole for the ILBs.

This is in the context of ever-declining base-D snaps, pushing under 20% in Packerland. The game has evolved to where most teams throw on first down, short yardage and of course the many tweener run-pass downs with regularity. So even if you're running the base D out there, the guys have to transition from run awareness to pass rush, and that's more easily accomplished if they're playing gaps.

The Packers run some this:

In the context of 2-gap in run defense, you're looking for DLs to work off blocks to the hole where they see the run going.

What you're talking about is pretty much limited to the NT playing zero-tech in some of the 20% base alignments where he's left to bull rush and press the pocket if it's a throw.

My high school coach taught the same style of defense it was very basic and different from everything that i learned afterward pro teams use much more complicated defenses now and ask their defensive linemen to do more than just take up blocks I restrained from using punctuation as well so that you could understand my response

I think many people seem to confuse run plays with passing plays.

On running plays, yes, the job the NT in any scheme (even 4-3s) is to occupy two offensive linemen. Even single-gap defenses. The idea being if you don't, he'll have a chance to get into the backfield and disrupt the play regardless of where it's going.

On passing plays, the NTs aren't going to command a double team. They may be big and strong, but aren't the kind of explosive athlete that is going to get a lot of sacks. Example: Gilbert Brown. 1-technique, single gap NT. 7 career sacks. On running plays, you had to double him. On passing plays, you doubled Reggie, simple as that.

With most fronts, the EDGE plays are going to get the most sacks--they're smaller, faster, and more explosive. Doesn't matter if you're a 4-3 team or a 3-4 team or 4-2 nickel or a 2-4 nickel.

An interior player that is more likely to demand double teams is "small" for an interior player, quick, and fast. Daniels is that player. (so is JJ Watt, for example.) Strong enough to hold up, but quick and fast enough to punish you if you let him beat you through the gap/cross your face/beat you outside.

A NT like Pickett doesn't have that. He's fast enough to reliably beat anyone one on one. Let the center or one guard take him. He'll get some push, but not a ton. By the time he gets enough of a push to impact the play, the ball should be gone.
