He's been playing below par...but that has been overrated due to deficiencies in other areas of defence and overall bad playbook/coordinator.

I think he'll have a good season with Rams to be worth that money, if not more.
You can't pay what the Packers paid on two pass rushers in free agency and then turn around and give Clay what the Rams gave him.

I like Clay Matthews, and would have gladly taken him back, but not for what the Rams paid him. Good for him, but we would have been a bit nuts to give him that.

Why not? We can tell him we can try to match what other team pays him and see where it goes. If his preference is to stay in GB assuming contract remains same, why not?

Both Smiths are younger and have had better stats, so obviously they get paid more than ageing Clay. Should be obvious even to him.

I’m pretty confused by this post. The answer seems too obvious. The Packers don’t have the cap space left, and Mathews’ performance does not warrant 8 plus million dollars a year.

In my opinion it's senseless to commit that type of money into three players who all play essentially the same position when you've got other needs to tend to.

Clay graded out lower than kyler Fackrell who had the same deficiencies around him. Clay graded out as the 59th best edge in the NFL. That is just ahead of Reggie Gilbert. Add to that Clay is an injury risk.

Maybe it works for the rams but Clay has become a very predictable pass rusher who gets taken out by single teams most of the time. I spent a lot of time watching him and he wasn't getting doubled much and he often kept trying the same speed rush and teams just let him rush all the way behind the qb.

No doubt that Clay isn't the same beast, but this is an honest question, not challenging you. To PackAttack's point, Clay was the main guy to block the last few years on the Packers defense, and those defenses were not good.

Were Fackrell's numbers inflated because of Clay's presence? I honestly don't know, I am not an opposing offensive line coach, nor know how many double teams Clay received.

Clay slowed down to your point, I hope the new scenery and being back home works for him. I think complacency plagued this team, offense and defense. And the new front office clearly doesn't have the attachment to some players as the fans. Which may rub people the wrong way, but if they're trying to make a serious run in the next 1-4 years, you can't fall in love with anyone.

I know the moves (or lack thereof) here and with Cobb are probably the correct ones. But they don't feel great.
Moving forward always feels great to me. Players come and players must go. That being said, I appreciated watching Matthews play in his early years and appreciate his contributions to the franchise.

I was just debating his current worth...cap considerations aside.

I would be interested to see how often Clay was doubled because a few games I watched specifically to see if he was and never saw it. Teams didn't need to because he often took himself out of plays. I love what Clay brought to the franchise but he was unproductive and unreliable the last couple years. Wish he could have went out on a better note

Again very unfair. Distill a 10 year stint with a team down to one moment of you seeing him standing on the sideline due to an injury that you're personally deeming not significant enough to warrant him sitting out based on.........? Cool.

It should of never been a "10 year career" in GB. Maybe a 5-6 year career. He is part of that group of guys that Ted Thompson just couldn't let go of no matter what.

Between his hamstring pulls and over pursuing everything in sight its been long overdue to see him GONE!

I would've traded him years ago when he still had a lot of stock and value.

Yeah, it was time on Cobb and Matthews but it does kinds stink. Hope they do well.

This has become Gutekunst's team in a relative hurry.

Here's hoping he's getting solid advice.

Clay should of been cut 3 years ago. I will never forget seeing him on the sideline in crunch time during the 2015 NFC champ game while Richard Sherman was out there playing with basically one arm. Yet people like to point the finger at QUITTERS on here all the time.

Ever since the PED investigation Matthews has been MEDIOCRE. I am not sad at any of this at all.

If he was cut 3 years ago, this big quitting play never happens.

If you can pick out on instance to judge him, I am going to pick this one and judge him. Big quitter.

On a serious note, does anyone know where The Rams are getting this money from?

Goff on a rookie deal? And big contracts in Suh and Joyner which now are off the books? Can't recall any noteworthy FA's they got this off season either.

at best GB would’ve offered him 4-5M area maybe 9M on a 2yr deal and moved him inside. Other teams have the available cap, we don’t.
I think he’s generally worth about 5-7M playing outside, even at his age. Watch, he’ll probably end up with 7-8 sacks which is respectable.
