When he visited San Francisco, they took him to a fancy restaurant and put 4 Super Bowl trophies in the center of the table. When Washington took him to a fancy restaurant, they put 3 Lombardis in the center of the table.
In a documentary I watched years ago, I seem to remember that either the 49ers or Redskins bought Reggie's wife a fur coat or something like that. It didn't impress the Whites.

Beyond the dinner at Red Lobster, I think that Reggie said that they just sat there for hours talking about football. It wasn't a sales pitch, but three guys sitting around talking about the game that they loved.

I've also read conflicting accounts about the catfish. Some say that they didn't have catfish on the menu but offered to put it on the menu if Reggie signed. I also read the transcript of a Ron Wolf interview where he said that they served only whole catfish - and that the manager vowed to put "fileted" catfish on the menu if Reggie signed.

Cool story. I prefer whole catfish myself. Don't think I've ever seen a Red Lobster that served it though.

And what I think is most remarkable is that most of his motivation in signing with the Packers was that he felt a personal admiration for the organization and the way they treated their players; how downhome and genuine everyone was, especially the fans. He felt at home here the minute he stepped off the plane; in fact, on the plane ride from Detroit, he was first impressed by the flight attendant on the charter jet - Sterling Sharpe served them drinks, sandwiches, kept them company, and made them feel at home.

Reggie told Sharpe he was reluctant to leave a big city, because his inner city mission work was important to him, and he said "there ain'tg no black people there." Sharpe looked at him and softly said, "You know, Reggie.... white people need saving, too. You think on that."

He was shocked and delighted when Wolf and Holmgren picked him up at Austin Strauble in a Jeep instead of a limo, and took him to Red Lobster for catfish instead of a steakhouse. They'd done their homework, and learned that was one of his favorites. That made him feel they cared about him and his wife as human beings.

When he visited San Francisco, they took him to a fancy restaurant and put 4 Super Bowl trophies in the center of the table. When Washington took him to a fancy restaurant, they put 3 Lombardis in the center of the table.

Green Bay took him to Red Lobster and fed him catfish. His kind of people.

He also mentioned in later years that when the Eagles played at Lambeau in 92, he and the rest of the D pounded Favre into a pulp. He was only sacked 3 times, but he took a lot of hard hits, and just kept getting back up. That was the game where reporters asked one of the other Eagle DL afterwards, "what unexpected difficulties did you encounter against the Packers today?", and he said "We had to be careful not to trip over Mandarich, because we never knew which way Reggie was going to throw him."

Favre went 23/33 that day for 275 yards and 2 TDs, despite the beating he took, and Reggie said he knew that kid was unique.

And of course, we all know that God played a part in it by leaving him a divine voice mail message.
Didn't Favre also play that '92 game against the Eagles with a separated non-throwing shoulder? I mean we know how he did it NOW, but wasn't that part of Reggie's decision?

Wow; if so, I had completely forgotten that. They sure did admire the hell out of each other, though.

I saw Favre tell a story about Reggie once.... worth sharing I think...

Little known fact 'Mirko' is the little brother of John Jurkovic, who gave up the #92 for Reggie

That's a great clip 13, thanks. Favre does a good RW impression!

And yeah, for as long as I can remember, Packer/Niner games were always big, over many, many years.

When they started the playoff season, ending with the SB win in 97, I recall the first playoff game was the Niners at Lambeau and the Packers destroyed them on, again I think, a rainy/sloppy field. Just recall because it was unusual to get rain at Lambeau in January. Then again, I could be completely mistaken.....

In truth there are a lot to consider. I could hear the argument for Brady, of course White, Saquon and others too for sure...
So those are all great ones. When I try to weed through the crop I consider how the player lifted those around him. I’m still torn on Saquon as he’s partly the benefactor of one of the Leagues Top OL. I think you could put Jacobs behind that OL and he’s +1 yard per carry or within a few hundred yards of Saquon. Just my opinion.

Same goes for Brady. Don’t get me wrong he’s the GOAT. But he took a #3 Offense to #3, but he absolutely gets better in Big Games, so into the Postseason, but that team was predicated on Todd and the D jump from the 20-something ranked to #8 scoring and rising into a Top 5 feel Defense in Postseason had very little to do with Tom Brady. No disrespect he’s still the overall best player by far.

Rod Woodson (Ravens), Charles Woodson (Packers) Peyton Manning (Denver) Bryce Paup (Bills 18.5 Sacks) Jerry Rice (Oakland) Deon Sanders (Cowboys) highlight some of the most prolific game changers spanning decades. Yet I can’t think of any that touch what Reggie White brought to GB Wisconsin.
1991 #22 overall Scoring
1992 #15
1993 #9
1994 #5
1995 #4
1996 #1
1997 #5

1998 #11
1999 #20

Reggie led a D ranked an average of #5.8 in scoring across a 6 year span. But what he also brought past legitimacy was Leadership. While he was a late comer to the NFL after registering 23.5 Sacks in the USFL, as a 24yr old in his NFL debut he registered 10 Tackles and 2.5 Sacks. Reggie would’ve far surpassed Bruce Smith had he come into the NFL 1 year earlier. He led the Men around him and you can tell they bonded to him. They trusted him and you can see that in the way they gravitated.
