There was a thread a while back titled; "Dom Capers and the Defense is Ready". On September 8th I posted; "Here ya go! Instead of being the swiss cheese d they went to being just the swiss cheese secondary. I guess that's improvement."

I've been trying soooo hard to be good and not say; "I told you so." But I ain't THAT good. ITYS! :sneaky:

4 of the top 5 cap figures on this team are defensive players. We had an all-defense draft in 2012. Our last two first rounders were defensive players along with two second rounders in the last two years.

I'm not talking about one game or one year or one injury. A lot of money and attention has been applied to the defense the last two seasons with, on balance, no appreciable improvement.

While it is true this team's hallmark is outscoring opponents, one would expect the defense to step up once in a while and close out a game. Going soft in the 4th. quarter has been a troublesome pattern that reaches back 3 years. A horrible red zone performance this season, while enjoying a string of QBs with unimpressive resumes is troubling. The lack of turnovers is equally troubling.

Where did you get your numbers? In just looking at the top 5, there are three offensive players and two defensive players.
  • Rodgers - $22mn/yr
  • CM3 - $13.2mn/yr
  • Tramon - $8.25mn/yr
  • Finley - $7mn/yr
  • Sitton - $6.75mn/yr

Also, let's not forget when the defense HAS stood up and played well. The Bengals game should have been won despite missing CM3 but our offense not only couldn't take advantage of 4 Bengals' turnovers but it was our OFFENSE which provided the winning points to the Bengals. So our defense hasn't been able to support an inept offense while missing our two best outside linebackers and one of our top 2 corners in the last two games. By my count that means our defense should have won us one game and has lost two games (though i would place quite a bit of blame on the offense in those games as well).

You say that you expect the D to stand up once in a while. Well, they have. It's unfortunate that they haven't done so in the last two games but let's also remember that they've played against two of the best RBs in the NFL, been playing without CM3 for one game and in the other had a CM3 that hurt more than he helped.

I would just like to know what a defensive coordinator should have done in the Eagles game that would have made CM3 a better tackler or had Williams actually making the two interceptions that he should have had (both of which resulted in TDs for the Eagles). Just consider that. Had Williams actually made both those picks, the Packers almost certainly win against the Eagles and we're talking about how the defense finally stood up and saved the Packers. I don't see how that's Capers fault.

Tramon making that much?!?! wow that's highway robbery smh. He hasn't made an impact play the entire year but has sure given up some. We shoulda kept Woodson and cut him instead! Woodson had the db's playing wih swagger and was a voice people respected on and off the field.

Uhh, no. He isn't a healthy Ed Reed, otherwise Baltimore and/or Texans would have kept him. Especially the Texans after they gave him all that coin.

I got my numbers here:

I forgot about Finley. You missed on Sitton and Pickett. So it's 4 of the top 6 are on defense. That hardly alters the argument.

Let's see. In the CIN game we entered the 4th. quarter with a 30 - 21 lead. CIN opened the 4th. quarter with a 95 yard TD drive. That's was weak and left us vulnerable to a bad bounce.

I'm not going to reply to the rest because, quite frankly, I didn't read it.

I know TT never trades but getting Byrd from the Bills could have done quite a bit to upgrade the free safety position. Its not like his draft picks are producing recently. His UDFA's have been making up for some bad draft picks anyways. I don't think losing a 3rd round pick would be that bad as I trust him to get a UDFA that will be better than some of his draft picks anyways.

Byrd has a $7 mil cap number and will be a FA after this season. The Bills have been unable to sign him...he wants a big pile of dough. With Burnett's new deal, dedicating that much money to the safety position would be imprudent. This deal was never in the realm of possibility.

I went to the same site. You must be looking at current cap year numbers which aren't very representative of what the player's value really is. Just looking at yearly cap numbers is misleading since teams often manipulate that number. Average per year is much better.

And I like your response to my point. Just don't read it. I'll admit, it makes it easy to maintain a belief!

Now that I have somewhat come back to my senses:
You are right, in the end, it's the players that have to make the plays.

yep. The coach has to have them in the right place to make the play tho..even tho these knuckleheads ran into eachother. I won't blame Capers for that one. I will blame him for not using better blitz pckages and using nickle way to much. When you have a charles woodson you can get away with that. We don't have a Charles Woodson.

But some still maintain we have such a solid roster we don't need to engage in free agency as we did when we got Woodson and Pickett.

That's right. I'm quoting cap numbers. That's what I said originally if you care to go back and look.

A player's cap number is the only number that matters. At the same time, averages tell you little. Once you look past the point where the guaranteed money is paid and the "dead cap" cost starts dropping, the out years of the contract are meaningless until you get there...the player could be cut, the money negotiated away, or if the player emerges as elite the figures could go up with a renegotiation. It's best to stick with the immediate, known and most relevant determinants of where monetary resources are being applied...this year's cap number...and this defense is costing a good deal.

Whichever number you choose, it does not speak to "value", the term you used, it speaks to "cost". And we've spent a lot of picks and cap on this defensive to yield such inconsistent, and in some regards, miserable results (turnovers, red zone), representing poor "value".

As for not reading the rest of your post. I don't read every post, and I don't read every point in every post when it ceases to interest me. That should not be unreasonable. As you say, it's "easy to maintain a belief". That's true whether you something or not, as you have evidenced here.

How common is it for an assistant coach, or heck, even the head coach to get fired and replaced in the middle of a season?
Don't expect to see Capers going away anytime soon.
Grin and bear it and weather the storm as long as he is around.

Why did they waive him?
He got beat out by a marginal NFL player who is injured.

He sucks. He is worse than Jennings and would not see the field if the Packers signed him. He has missed 2 games to injury; is ranked as one of the worst safeties in football (#73) according to profootball focus. He has no passes defensed, zero interceptions, averages 2 tackles a game, and is so slow he routinely is the focus of opposing QBs. And to top it all off, when confronted by his poor play, he says the team was outplayed and outcoached.

This is always been a problem with the defense because it lacks playmakers. Our defense has lacked any playmakers on the dline (until this year with Mike Daniels) historically, we have only one impact linebacker (until this year we also featured the worst in Walden), we have only one adequate NT on the roster at a position that could really use a difference maker and we've had a revolving door at the safety spot opposite Burnett. That's on TT, not Capers.

As for the games mentioned in the article, I don't know how you blame the defense for the Bengals game. I mean, the defense forced four turnovers and the offense fumbled the ball which gave the Bengals the winning points (I think the Packers offense also turned the ball over like four times).

I've found the issue! Capers is also the DC for Georgia. This is the ending of yesterday's Georgia-Auburn game. Obviously Capers can't handle both:

I post this in mild jest because it looks just like the DeSean Jackson TD vs the Eagles. Capers is obviously not the DC at Georgia but the similarity in plays is there.

The rest of the story is here: http://www.sbnation.com/college-foo...ary-beats-georgia-and-the-internet-melts-down

His draft picks haven't been producing lately? I'll give you that some of them have been injured, but this past years rookie class has made a huge impact. Lacy, Bakhtiari, Jones, Hyde etc.
