Yeah, I watched a DB or three chasing him in the open field without closing on him. Those little guys aren’t 4.6 X40 guys either. He may have ran a 4.56 or whatever but he’s not someone you’re going to want to foot race if he has a step on ya, unless you’re a sub 4.39 type athlete.
He has a nice 130 inch broad jump, so lots of natural explosion, which shows up on tape, for a big back who accelerates and retains enough speed to keep away from the guys who can tackle him and enough physicality to be more than a problem for the DBs on the backend.
I watched his tape against Clemson where he picked up a tough 54 yards on 16 carries. Not a banner day but A) Clemson dominated NDs offensive front, and managed a few jailbreak like penetrations. B) Williams showed on multiple occasions that he could with his acceleration run past defenders who should have had an angle on him, including one cat who is reputed to run in the 4.3s. He's one of those guys who has the initial burst to throw defenders off in their angles of pursuit. C) He's a physical player who seems to always get back to the LoS and always seems to fall forward, discounting those blown up sweep plays and another where his quarterback pitched it to him to avoid the sack. D) He reacts well and does what he should as the game moves around him, good decision making on his pass blocks and knows when to leak out for a pass.
They say that a good back is a guy who consistently gets that extra 1-2 yards for you and I think he showed that against Clemson. A lesser back would have struggled to hit 2 ypc behind an Oline as over matched as his was.
