Well the subject of this thread is what if AR gets injured. I'd rather have Teddy than Kizer in that case. Kizer is not yet ready to be a back up if AR can't play.
Bridgewater signed a one year deal with the Jets in 2018 free agency for $5 mil base and up to $15 mil with incentives.
First, that would have been an odd choice as an injury backup given that Bridgewater missed all of 2016 and a chunk of a 2017 on PUP with a career threatening injury. He threw two balls in 2017; there was no tape on which to evaluate his recovery.
Second, had you signed him to that deal and he had to replace an injured Rodgers, earning most of that $15 mil, you would not have won anything anyway in 2018 and having expended that cap you would not have been able to sign one or two of the free agents brought in this offseason.
Third, what makes you think Bridgewater would have wanted to be in Green Bay backing up Rodgers? When he went to the Jets he was competing with Josh McCown for a starting job.
The Jets then drafted Darnold, and by the conclusion of preseason had settled on him as the week 1 starter. The Jets then traded Bridgewater and 6th. round pick for a 3rd. rounder just before the start of the 2018 season. Had the Packers made that same deal, and Bridgewater played most of the 2018 season because of a Rodgers injury, again you'd have won nothing, and now you're down one or two free agents and Jace Sternberger.
Moving forward to 2019, the Saints re-upped Bridgewater for one year @ $7 mil and two voidable years. He may have extorted a little more money from the Saints by making a visit to Miami at the 11th. hour. Brees is 40 years old on a one year deal with two voidable years. Had it been Miami instead, he would have been competing to start. Bridgewater is getting a nice paycheck with the Saints who in essence have bought an expensive option to move on from Brees after this season.
So, signing Bridgewater to a comparable deal to what the Jets offered in 2018 would have made no sense. You'd be howling right now if Rodgers had been injured, the Packers won nothing, and couldn't manuever in free agency to this degree. Taking on that contract in trade with the Jets would have made less sense, losing that 3rd. round pick.
Bridgewater's $7 mil in cap for 2019 would have been a tough pill to swallow. Subtract one of the free agents. And in all of this,
what makes you think Bridgewater would have been interested in backing up the 35 year old Rodgers?
Bridgewater, like many vet QBs with perceived value, want to go where there is a chance to start, now or soon, and get to that next big contract. High backup pay is an expression of stong interest in that QBs future with the team.
So, sign Bridgewater? He would not have been interested at the contract values others offered because he would not have been interested in sitting on the bench for years to come. How much would you have had to offer to change his mind? A lot more than what these teams have been paying him to the detriment of the roster rebuilding process.
