Message: <blockquote data-quote="Pokerbrat2000" data-source="post: 844143" data-attributes="member: 7261">Admittedly, I have never returned punts professionally, but based on observations of 1000's of punt returns, what you describe is not the case from what I have observed.  A punt returner is constantly checking 2 things, the flight of the ball, probably the first thing he checks, then how the return itself is shaping up.  This is a constant back and forth with his vision....ball...defenders....ball....Why do you think a punt returner often waits until the very last second to put his hand up for a fair catch?  Because that is the last moment he looked and saw that his return options weren't very good.In the case of Sunday, Davis should have seen the defender (Ameer Abdullah) not get blocked 20 yards down the field, he didn't and he got clocked.  Kudos to him for hanging on to the ball.  Thumbs down to Sullivan for not turning the right way and blocking the guy that eventually hammered Davis.  I will say though, you are probably right on one thing, I rewatched that video and focused on Davis's head, he seemed to only be staring into the sky for most of that punt.We can go back and forth all day on this one play, however, this is just one of many punts that Davis made bad decisions on, including one in the same game, when he decided to block after making a fair catch and then letting the ball hit.</blockquote>
