No he will never be as good as Lombardi, and we aren't winning the SB this year. Wasn't Lombardi considered one of if not the top O coordinator when we hired him? MLF wasn't. Movie reference was, we have watched this team for years not be able to run the ball on 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1. We beat the Bears, who have a back up QB pretending he's a starter. beat the Vikes, with another pretending QB, and Denver, with still another pretending QB. We played an Eagles team, with a real QB and real O and Dlines. How did that work out? On the road, they imposed their will on us. When do the Packers impose their will on another team? On the road? Been a long time. I see us as slightly improved from last year. I see us as 9-7. 10-6, if we make the playoffs, we're most likely going home early and in that playoff game we won't be able to run and we won't be able to stop the run.

No. No he wasnt. The Giant offense, he was the OC, was ranked 4th worst in the NFL the year before we hired him.
MLF wasn't.
Yes. Yes he was. MLF in his first year as OC for the rams was a huge boost to the Ram offense elevating them to the top ranked offense.

You just cant make up **** to make a point.

Whether you want to believe it or not, MLF is doing better than Lombardi at this point of his career. It is stupid to say he is as good or even in the ball park of Lombardi, but it is even stupider to say he cannot be.

And MLF's O at the Titans was ranked what? Lombardi was 7-5 first year wasn't he? 70% winning % MLF will have to win 11 games to be 70%. With our schedule, and where they are played, I don't see it.

Actually that more like 9 games.

But we’re roughly 70% already there.. using Packer96 advanced mathematics, of course
Next course: Sentential/Propositional Calculus and Truth Tables. Be on time!

Sorry shouldn't post when half asleep, and do math :), but he is not Lombardi and our team is not winning the SB until we can run the ball and stop the run. Having Capt. America at QB pulling games out only hides our weaknesses. Oline, and LB.

There’s a lot of football left. Many teams start slow but turn the juice on late in the season.

I’ll never forget how the Giants started their season with substantial losses to both GB and Dallas and later lost to the Patriots at Giants stadium (2007)

Their D gave up 97 points through the 1st three weeks! They additionally gave up several 40-burgers including a late season blowout loss week 12 to MN.
Their D allowed an average of 37 pts/gm. in those 4 contests against GB, Dallas (twice) and NE during regular season.

I remember very well that NY was similarly “all but written off” by experts and us novices alike, but they squeezed in as a 10-6 wildcard as a 5th seed NFC.

They then found their mojo and in irony went on to defeat both Dallas and then GB en route to playing the Pats. We all know now how they crushed the hopes of the undefeated Patriots. Btw, the average score of the 3 above playoff caliber Offenses who lost?? 17 points.

I would imagine there were a lot of embarrassed Giants fans after initially speaking similarly about the demise of their own team.
It’s not how you start the game.. it’s how you finish the season

Its a thread of revelations for you. Rodgers has not been playing as good as he has in the past. He is now about the middle of the pack. You can blame it on WRs, but when Carr, Mariota, Minshew, and Wilson all have better stats with even less in the receivers, you have to start thinking.

As far as MLF being Lombardi, only 1 other coach has been as good in the last 60 years so dont use that as your barometer.

Lombardi was highly regarded in football circles but was generally unknown to fans. He had very limited success before he was hired. MLF is rated very highly as well. Although he didnt have much success with the Titans, it was still more than Lombardi had with the Giants.

Again, in Lombardis 4th game they got blown out by the worst team in football. What would have been your view of lombardi if he was in MLFs shoes, except he got destroyed by the Dolphins 45-6?

And, i will point out, Lombardi inherited a rostsr with 15 HOF or allpro players on it. Far more than MLF has to work with.

Look, im not sure why you are so down on MLF. Coaches are like players in they need time to develop. Even Belechick got fired from his first HC job. Can you imagine if the Browns kept him how Browns history over the last 15 years would be different?

Rodgers hasn't been the main reason the Packers won a game so far this season.

Vince inherited a team with a bunch of underperforming players coming off a abysmal season under Scooter. He made them I to all pros. Had it been any other coach, I'm not sure we'd be having this conversation now.

It's up to MLF to turn this team into stars. Both Smith's, Jaire, AR, AJ, Amos, Davante, Blake, Bakht, Linsley etc all have a shot at a All Pro....if we get the team to settle down.

I agree. I Believe coaching is a much bigger part of success than player talent.

I agree. Sometimes it's better to go back to basics. Tackling a player on first try is something I'd like MLF/Pettine to pay more attention on.

Running routes would be close next for Matt.

Yeah, there are reasons for it, the talent on the team has declined. Rodgers is great, don't get me wrong. He is a well rounded quarterback. But the main thing he does the best is not throw interceptions. And that is a fantastic thing. But this whole "greatest quarterback of all time" hype that's been attached to him seems to be overstating things a bit. I don't think he's quite been showing that.

Now put the right talent around him and I'm sure it would make a huge difference. But I'm not sure if that's going to happen, especially considering his cap number is going to jump quite a bit in the upcoming years.

Coaching is definitely a factor but it doesn't trump talent.

Unfortunately it's close to impossible practicing it with the current rules in place.

Rodgers has definitely performed at a level that should result in him being considered one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. The talent drain at receiver has made it tough for him to continue that path in recent years though.

The difference between a good NFL player and a great football player is extremely minor as far as raw talent goes. There is a reason Belechick has a great team every year and Andy Reed and the Seattle guy as well. None of those guys have a very talented rosters. I know you will point to the excellent QBs, bit I think they have great QBs in large part to the coaching and play around them.

Whether it is teaching skills, motivating, scheme, utilization, culture, game planning, or player development, a coach is a much bigger impact than the players talent.

One of the greatest, sure. The greatest of all time? Might have been, under different circumstances. As it is, I'm not seeing it. As it is, with the talent drain, and the defenses we've been facing, he's getting outplayed by half the league.

AR gives us a punchers chance in any game, but against playoff caliber teams you have to run the ball, and stop the run. The Eagles are a playoff caliber team, and they exposed us, against the bottom feeders we look good. Had our first real game and we failed to run or stop it.

We replaced 4 of our front 7 with new faces this offseason. We kept Martinez, Clark and Lowry. That’s 57% of our starting front 7 being different than last year. It takes time when you revamp a group like that and 4 regular season games don’t cut it. I think possibly your expectation of this D out of the gate (which is exactly what the first quarter of the season is) is a bit too high.
It’s completely reasonable they would have some growing pains with all those changes there.

Also, I think it’s convenient people say we’re not playing good teams yet they forget to mention in their bias that excluding the games GB played in those contests, those teams have a combined record of 7-5 against other opponents. Not hardly the bottom feeder material you portray, as of week 5 anyway. (which is a relatively small sample size). I’m sorry to inform you, but that shows me an unsubstantiated opinion, but your opinion doesn’t align with the facts.

Relax, don’t beat yourself up every week. Maybe just let the season progress and judge it a season quarter against another season quarter. You remind me of when people go on a weight loss diet and weigh themselves 3 times a day and get discouraged because they get impatient that they gained 8oz. ;)
I think it’s much more prudent to compare the first 4 games to the next 4 and so on (weeks 5-8) to get a better comparison and let the stats level off a bit.

It seems there's no way we agree on this. Coaching definitely matters but even the best ones need to have enough talent on the roster to field a successful team.

How come some teams are good at it year after year?

I have no idea, maybe the Packers don't put as much value into tackling when evaluating players.

I don't care about discussing about the greatest of all time but Rodgers definitely has been an elite quarterback. The Packers haven't taken full advantage of his talent over his tenure as the starter.

I agree the Packers need to stop run but with Rodgers at quarterback they don't necessarily have to successfully run the ball. They have faced a playoff team in the Bears as well.

4-1, doing it without Davante Adams .... Hell YEAH!!

I think now the state of Packer fandom is improving in its happiness!!!

I'll just say right now .... I'm loving today

Looking forward .... Cautiously optimistic. I say that because it was only 2 seasons ago that we were also 4-1, coming off a huge win in D-Town and demoralizing Bayless with a lot to look forward to. BUT .... Well we know what happened next.

But who knows, maybe ... Just maybe this team is headed now where it should have gone in 2017.

Improving every week, while still showing signs of needing improvement and winning? I’ll take it. This team is putting pieces together and not a finished product.
