The average mean salary of backup QB’s in the NFL today floats in between $2 mil and $3 mil, so paying a QB $3 mil as a backup for his entire contract is not out of the normal confines of QB salaries across the league.  In addition,  one would have to guarantee he is a backup for all 4 seasons, which I think would be a premature assertion. How do we know he isn’t the starter in a couple years?  His value won’t be fully realized until his contract is up and if it’s as a career backup, he’s a smidge over league average. The second point I’d make is QB’s hold a higher monetary priority than other position groups.
