Adding Veteran Leadership

The Packers have a super young team that's been to the playoffs in back to back seasons, they have cap space to move this off-season, and their GM is probably as good as anyone in the league at adding quality veteran talent to the roster.

But here's the problem-- this free agent class is terrible. There are hardly any blue chip talents due to hit the market, especially if you're aiming for younger players.

So how could the Packers still improve? I think it's by doing something that's kind of our of character: targeting players who are over 30. I have two in mind in particular:

1) Khalil Mack, DE, LAC: The Packers have a storied history of signing HOF level defenders nearing the end of their careers (White, Woodson, Peppers). Mack fits that mold. He was still playing at a very high level in 2024 and elite pass rushers tend to age gracefully. Green Bay currently has four young defensive ends, all of whom deserve some snaps, but none of whom are difference-makers. Mack would upgrade the pass rush while hopefully mentoring the younger guys in the room and perhaps helping them to finally break through.

2) Davante Adams, WR, NYJ: Adams is technically under contract, but New York saves a ton of money by releasing him (~30M in cap space). He's taken a step back from the elite player he once was, but he would still be the best receiver in GB by a wide margin. He's compelling to me mostly for two reasons: 1) he would immediately address the man coverage problems currently plaguing the Packers offense and 2) there's zero concern about his ability to translate to LaFleur's offense. He would be the ideal player-mentor for Wicks.

So you add a veteran leader to both sides of the ball who can still play and who also address areas of need. The relative depth in their position groups would meanwhile allow the Packers to carefully manage their snap load throughout the season and keep them fresh for a postseason push.

I am a massive fan of bringing in Mack. His pressure rate and play last year was one of the best in the league at his position.

I'm not opposed to Adams coming back, but it has to follow a Jets release or his willingness to contract shredding. You mentioned why I'd love him here, give me one maybe two years of him helping Wicks....who literally separates at the same level as Adams or better....but execution isn't there.

If you told me both these guys are here and we add maybe toss a small contract at say an Adebo and retain Stokes cheap and really only have to worry about A gap iDL and CB in the draft???? Sign me up every day for that!

Both Thielen and Hopkins have looked pretty good on and off. But their time is rapidly coming to a close. And coaches are the ones that are supposed to teach running routes and coming up with decent plays against pass defenses. I'm honestly don't agree with all this veteran leadership is needed. Playmakers are needed.

Veteran presence. 5 TDs in 10 games played. Would play with a chip on his shoulder vs. Minny. Most likely inexpensive. 1 yr deal, 2 at the most. Most importantly, I have always liked him.

Fair enough. At this point in his career, I think Thielen is a zone beater. The Packers, to my mind, need receivers who can defeat man coverage.

All this talk of adding WRs, means that we have to cut guys that all have promise. I'm fine with cutting one for lets say a Devante Adams, but would be extra enthusiastic if they brought in a retiring WR as an assistant WR coach. That's what we are mostly talking about is someone that can really teach these guys how to do it right and take the next step.

I'd rather not waste a roster spot and lose potential if some older player would be willing to do the teaching in practice versus in-game.

No cuts needed really…unless Watson rejoins off IR late in the year. We’ve routinely held 6 on roster (Doubs, Watson, Reed, Wicke, Heath and Melton)

Adding one is easily done, but also if say somehow Adams does come and we draft a guy that is good enough to beat out Heath or Melton….isn’t that a better WR room?

I fully understand what you’re saying though. We can add one guy easily, two is where some changes are going to happen.
