I got some people to text that gave me all kinds of **** for declaring this the moment Banks was signed.... LOL

ALSO...I'd still not remove center from draft watchlist...I could see us sneaking a Jake Majors or something Day3 with the potential cap savings of Jenkins and us parting ways after this season...his hit just keeps going up...2026 is $24.8M...NOW of course if we think he is going to be our starting center and shows he can do it for a couple more seasons you could easily do an extension to lesson that down too.

I think when the season starts, you want at least 7 quality OL players, all who can start and some being able to play multiple positions. Injuries happen and the OL seems to always have its fair share.

Jenkins salary may seem high for a center, but I think his injury history/ability to stay on the field, his flexibility of positions and of course his talent, makes that salary palatable.

I like Monk and that coin flip could still pan out - but a move like that would allow him to focus on guard OR more likely you let in 2026 Monk and Majors fight it out after letting Jenkins walk (IF WE DID THAT). Majors is a better rookie prospect at center as example than I personally held Monk too...now is Monk a better 2025 NFL lineman than Majors given his year...possible.

But THAT isn't his salary. Jenkins average salary is $17M/year. Creed Humphrey is being paid $18M/year, a deal he made last year.

Now if you want to talk about cap hits, dead cap hits, etc., that is more of a cap accounting conversation than it is a salary conversation.

As his contract stands right now, that $24.8M would be the cap hit that the Packers would have to report in 2026, if Jenkins is on the team. Why so much? Because like most contracts, they pushed a lot of his cap hit out in the early years of his deal.

Whether the Packers will keep that number on the books, depends a lot on the kind of year the Jenkins has in 2025. It also will depend on how the books look and if they need to "clear" cap space for other moves.

I think if Jenkins has a healthy, Pro Bowl type of year at Center, the Packers try to redo his current deal. He probably will even be give a pay raise, but yes, in that situation, his 2026 cap hit won't be anywhere near the $24.8M.....but it will be in 2029

When I speak in terms of fiscal decisions of a team in a given year I'm 100% only caring about what he does to the books (hit).

I like trying to keep it simple. But isn't the bonus money part of what he is making? Or are we just looking at yearly salary w/o considering maybe big differences in bonus money?

Are you talking about roster, signing, workout or other earned bonuses? It it's a signing bonus, that's money already spent (given to player), but may not be fully accounted for on the cap in the year that it is paid out. As far as the other bonuses, that are more specific to each given year of the contract, I look at them in the year that they are paid out and accounted for against the cap.

I'm only saying that signing bonuses can differ a lot. And how much a player earns per year should take into consideration also the amount of the signing bonus. By dividing bonus by the years of the contract. Yes, it's in the past but for figuring out how much one person is making compared to another.

I agree they need 7 quality OL. Hopefully they get the 7th one in the draft. Personally, I would like to see 5 of the 7 back in 2026 with Rhyan and Jenkins not retained. I am most likely in the minority.

I just don't think we have seen enough of either just yet. This year will tell the tale imho. But I have seen enough of Jenkins at tackle to be of the opinion that he should not play there. It does show the need to draft another good one. Too many places where we need to get better.

100% If he plays center well I honestly fully expect the team, especially if we have a few more rookie controlled OL with potential added to Morgan that we work out a two or three year extension with him more at an aging but starting center salary rate and never let that big number hit.

His 2025 is a bit aggressive, but not if he plays solid to great center play so I'm actually perfectly fine with his 2025 hit...especially since we have four guys all vying for starting roles that are still as of today rookie controlled.

Apologies, yes, you are correct, it would be an additional $20M out of pocket to Jenkins in 2026. I forgot to take into consideration his game and workout bonuses, so my bad. That said, it isn't the $24M being thrown around.

When Jenkins got his new deal in 2022, he was being paid as a G-T blend. If his new fulltime job is at Center, he and the Packers may have to decide after this season, what his new value is worth.

Bumping up Mannion was the plan ever since Day One; glad to see it happen. Although actually, I recall reading that he was promoted the same day Tom Clemens retired, January 30th.

I'm excited to see what he is able to do, especially after having a full season to work with Clemens and learn from him. I think that was an excellent hire by Lafleur, and it was triply good news because it pissed off both Bear fans and Vikings fans! The Vikings and their fans had mostly assumed that when he officially retired as a player, he would someday join their staff, and the Bears were getting ready to hire him when Lafleur snatched him right out of their grubby little bear paws.

In fact, the thing that led to Lafleur hiring him was that Mannion had been Jared Goff's backup in LA in 2017 when Lafleur was the offensive coordinator for the Rams. Lafleur was highly impressed with his preparation, intelligence, discipline, and knowledge of the game. After Lafleur came to the Packers, he told Mannion to reach out if he ever felt like going into coaching.

In January of 24, Mannion was about to interview with the Bears for their quarterback coaching position. He set up a Zoom call with Lafleur so Matt could critique his presentation, and Lafleur was so impressed he offered Mannion a job with the Packers.

Over his years as a backup quarterback, several head coaches said he was going to be a head coach some day, and they often said that having him in a quarterback meeting was like having another quarterback coach in the room. Kirk Cousins (4 years older than Mannion), said that he learned as much from Mannion as he did from most coaches about how to prepare for a game, and how to organize and use information.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what he brings to the job. He may be a tremendous help to Love.

Edit: a couple more interesting things about Mannion... he is tied with Alex Smith for the 8th highest Wonderlic score in the history of the NFL, 40 - which roughly correlates to an IQ of 140. He received an interdisciplinary master's degree (which is a degree in which you combine 2 or more separate academic disciplines to prepare yourself for a complex and unique field of study... they're typically quite challenging) combining sociology, political science, and history. His GPA was 3.7.

The dude's a brainiac. If he does indeed have coaching skills, he could be very successful for us.
