Out of towners always assume Green Bay exists in isolation. It is surrounded by suburbs.
Several decades ago, I took a girlfriend to Door County for our 1yr dating anniversary. She allowed me to stop in Green Bay to take her through the old Packers HOF. I remember her asking if we were in Green Bay yet. Just then a bunch of houses appeared with the first one sporting a massive moose rack mounted above the garage door. It kind of confirmed that we were entering Green Bay, and moments later you could see Lambeau Field.

Back then the suburbs didn't extend out as far as they do now. It always surprises me now adays when I drive to Green Bay how far out you start seeing the nice houses on 29.

Schlitz. The beer that made Milwaukee famous. I'm old enough to remember when that was a really, really good beer. Then they messed with the formula, watered it down it seemed, and that was that.

Back in the early 2000s, they tried to re-create the original formula which was lost to history. They gathered a few of the remaining brew masters from Schlitz and tried to get it as close as possible. If you see Schlitz in the liquor store now, it's that re-creation of the original. It's not quite what it was, but it is far better than the rice recipe that killed it during the beer wars.

Now it's just a decent lager but semi-hard to find.

I used to work there, in the Brown County Arena. That was a summer job; my first job ever. $1.35 an hour, and I'll never forget how amazed i was when I looked at that first check. I guess it, was, like 30 or 40 bucks or something. I remember seeing the deduction for Social Security, and wondering if I would live long enough to ever collect.

I wondered what my life would be like 50-some years later; what sort of things I would do during those years. There was just something magical about the whole concept of Social Security. And in a way it still is; the federal government deposited into my bank account earlier today money that I earned when I was 13 years old. Sorta feels weird...

But damn, that was a wonderful job, working every day in the Packer Hall of Fame, occasionally meeting both current and retired Packer players - many of whom were still alive in 1970, and would occasionally have reason to travel back to Green Bay for some dinner or whatever. You never knew who you were going to see.

Sometimes I still think that was the best job I ever had.

That's it - the rice recipe. Wow that was bad beer. Huge mistake.

I didn't know it was still being brewed.

Considering the population of GB is just north of 100,000 (I think), there won't be nearly as many hotel rooms as needed, even coming as far south as Milwaukee. So I'm guessing it's going to be a massive cluster on day one with a lot of people driving in and out of Green Bay (or as close as they can get), and then a big reduction in crowd size on days 2 and 3. Watch for a lot of tent cities to be springing up. It will look like San Francisco......
Hopefully they leave though. I think the fairgrounds is already full with rvs and such. I do have a place to park about a mile away with a quick access to get home.
