Look I understand playoffs are still going AND a lot of tape/film/testing still ahead of me for me to refine my prospects out and refine my top 200 (have only ever assigned a grade to at most 136 prospects...I review far more and make notes but full grade out never to all)....BUT...
My buddy that always poses Packer questions said layout right now a Packer 5 round draft with no movement/trades as we are predicted to be slotted now (which is 24th team to pick).
Fine...here's a chance to share some guys I haven't already shared in the prospect thread...and likely introduce you guys to a few too:
1.24 - With no trades allowed back or forward...and being a draft year where as of right now our most immense need intersects with one of the most valuable positions to draft early - I predict we go Cornerback. Now to share my thoughts...to me Will Johnson is the clear CB1 and we have no shot at him. After that we have a cluster IMO of Benjamin Morrison, Jahdae Barron, Shavon Revel....but sneaky guys that may surprise some folks also you got Zy Alexander, others love Muhammad and some say Azareye'h Thomas...all that said IF Benjamin Morrison is there I don't hesitate and send it in assuming medical recovery from his hip surgery is all good. BUT I don't think he is there, so Green Bay in this case, with Jaire likely playing in his last season with GB in 2025 or even on his way out, hand in the draft card with the name Jahdae Barron, the 5'11' 200lb playmaker at corner for the Texas Longhorns.
Barron for years was more the slot/box safety role with around 80%+ of his snaps coming at slot or box positions....2024 he slid to an outside role and dominated. This year his breakdown was 13% in slot coverage, 69% outside coverage, 14.5% in the box and rest on line or deep. All Barron did was create 5 INTs / 11 PDs / 0 TDs given up / a passer rating when targeted of 32.3 (65 targets) / only 7.7 yards per reception allowed / 4.18 yards per target. In the past when he was more a box guy - he put up 17 TFLs across 2022 and 2023 and over 130 tackles those years too. He has a rock solid build and has very good long speed. The ONLY thing I'm curious of is how well he does int he 3 cone and the forty. I suspect he tests VERY well at cone and I'm thinking he's likely a 4.4 type forty guy which is more than adaqquate with his ball skills, footwork and hips.
2.56 - We all know the recent injury to Christian Watson, and drop issues of Reed and Wicks that Packer nation likely will be screaming for a playmaking wide receiver. With that in mind, Gute calls in their pick for a guy not many likely recognize and like Rashan Gary will have folks that aren't aware screaming bloody murder of over-drafting and such. But this young man is credited with being one of the most versatile playmakers in the entire Sunbelt Conference...and credited by many for the reason his team won the conference this year. His 17 sacks led the entire nation, his 63 pressures second in the entire nation, had a win% rate of 21% on pass rush chances and an overall pass rush PFF grade of 91.0. Green Bay looks to replace and recharge their pass rush with Mike Green, the 6'4' 248lb pass rusher from Marshall.
Now to be honest edge guys are TOUGH to predict. I personally think Mike Green is worthy of a pick at the end of the first, BUT I think in the end a lot of teams go to the power five guys like Sawyer, Tuimoloau, Kennard even before Green hears his name called. Even Gillotte or Ezeiruaku (two guys that this pick could easily be) might hear their names called before his. Green started out at Virginia as a freshman back in 2021, only saw a few snaps (still produced a TFL and a sack) before he transferrred to Marshall where he has created troubles for EVERYONE he faces and not just the lesser schools. Whether it was wrecking the pocket against Ohio State or his nine pressures against Virginia Tech its just incredible what he's done week in and week out. His first step explosion I think might be tough for OL to handle at the senior bowl, and that week could be when those not tapped in fully begin to recognize his name.
3.88 With forums and keyboard coaches everywhere typing the phrase "Best available WR" Gute and the organization however continue to lay the ground work to rebuilding the most depleted room currently, just like he did in 2024 when he drafted 3 safeties and brought in Xavier McKinney. One CB that is out there which I am a big fan of, and has been on my radar for a while comes from the mecca of corners....er, nevermind not really, but this Kansas Jayhawk has been making plays and frustrating QBs consistently for years now. Third straight season where the passer rating of QBs targeting him was sub 75.0, third straight season he had 3 or more INTs, third straight season forcing a fumble...and this year he did it on a team that was depleted and overall a tough team to look good on. Cobee Bryant, the 6'1' 175lb (listed...I suspect might play heavier) corner has consistently for three years now looked like one of the best corners against some of the toughest competitions. His arm length is special, his grit is something you cannot teach and I suspect he's going to test VERY VERY well.
What might be the cherry on top of him for me, is the fact even though he doesn't have a ton of weight to him - this kid LOVES to hit, and uses form typically to avoid injury issues many CBs have when they simply throw themselves at someone like a rag. This year he even had 4 TFLs and last year 5 TFLs as a guy that nearly is always outside coverage. He blitzes very well and aggressively on outside corner blitzes too.
4.125 Alright this is finally where we get our 4th round Romeo of 2025...right? Nope...Gute and Co continue to build and with only 7 OL under contract and deciding to move on from Myers I predict...we need to supplement that OL. Sticking to the draft tackles that can slide inside of needed, in the fourth is where some of the sweet spot exists of guys like this and Chase Lundt of UConn is such a guy. He has been incredible in 2024 - giving up just 5 hurries, 1 QB hit and zero sacks. Over the last three years he's only given up 5 sacks total and 26 hurries....with only 5 QB hits. His 2024 overall PFF grade of 85.0 is one of the best in the game for tackles and his 78.3 last year is solid as well.
What I like about him is he could easily project with his suspected decent but not excellent arm length to a slide inside...his mobility and quickness with his slight 300 pound frame thanks to his 6'8'' frame I think sets himself up to be that swing tackle of the future type....providing Morgan instantly with perhaps the ability to focus on being the All Pro LG that many feel he could easily be and Jenkins slide to center which has appeared to be the preferred back up center when Myers has been out over the years. Quite a few are going to boo this pick and think waste...but again we are not the Chicago Bears...we don't ignore the trenches, and realize to continue to churn an OL out that can be at the level GB is used to you HAVE to continue drafting your Monks, your Lundts because some turn into your Toms or your Rasheed Walkers.
5.159 Here is arguably one of the first "luxury" picks, but I'd argue it is only because we have plenty of bodies, but as a whole no one in this position group has been what we'd hoped consistently and separated themselves. Clark has been one of the leagues best consistently year after year, but 2024 wasn't his best. Wyatt is starting to show first round ability but still hasn't separated himself as much as he ought....and Brooks and Wooden both at times look like starters and other times can be forgotten. Let's introduce a highly gifted interior defensive lineman who consistently wins his matchups, diagnosis of double teams is great and is graded as one of the best interior run defenders in the draft...albeit from a smaller school. Darius Alexander from Toledo is the pick and all this young man has done is consistently deliver....three straight seasons where PFF gave him a 80 (79.9 in 2022) run defense grade and this year he graded out .1 shy of being a 90.0 rated player....only Mason Graham of guys that saw over 300 snaps graded better for interior defensive lineman. Proving to be all around his 35 pressures were more than Graham and Nolen - both of whom are to many first rounders (Graham is a no doubt first rounder).
At 6'4'' and 310lbs his frame is excellent and between his length, anchor and hand strength there is a lot to like in this lessor known defender out of the MAC. *FTR this pick is also predicated on the fact I think TJ Slaton leaves in FA.
Being at the end of this first mock...I'll only be doing one in January, February and March - with two final ones in April. Sorry to those that are annoyed with all my draft postings, I know it isn't everyone's thing...but the draft and roster building through it is by far one of my favorite things about football.
Summary:
1.24 Jahdae Barron - CB Texas
2.56 Mike Green - Edge Marshall
3.88 Cobee Bryant - CB Kansas
4.125 Chase Lundt - OT UConn
5.159 Darius Alexander - iDL Toledo
