Working on a story piece for fun for this mock scenario...which reflecting on it as I've said is PRECISELY what my goal of this draft would be as far as making moves. What if I told you that all of the "Rodgers never gets weapons" talk has not always fallen on deaf ears? What if I told you Gute attempted multiple times post-Love pick to nab WRs they liked at the top of the 2nd? What if I told you 2021 is the year he finally gets a "yes" on one of those calls....but not after PISSING off a fan base yet again first: Sitting on the clock at Pick 29...Moore is there, Toney is there - both would be deadly weapons in the MLF system. "Trade" flashes on the screen and in mere seconds keyboards are pounded, beers a chugged and numerous rumblings for Gute's job surge through the interwebs. The trade sends our #29 First Rounder to the Panthers. In return we get their #43 (2nd) #112 (4th) & #232 (7th). From a value stance it is fair trade and Panthers get a guy that would have helped the Packers as well in Nick Bolton LB. Picks start ticking away...Toney goes to the Chiefs at 32 - another weapon added to an insanely potent offensive juggernaut, awesome. The Bengals at #37 give Burrow a weapon in Moore...we also see Asante Samuel CB, Chazz Surratt LB and Baron Browning LB all linked as targets for the Packers go off the board. Our number is finally up...many are rumbling for Amon St. Brown or Nico Collins...others saying grab Elijah Moore and a few others ask for Eskridge. JUST GET RODGERS A WEAPON ESSENTIALLY. The pick is in, and with the 40th pick of the 2021 NFL Draft the Green Bay Packers pick Daviyon Nixon iDL Iowa. Now, while many scream and bemoan...the logical fans cannot help but smile at what just happened. Gute bounces back in the draft, add pick equity and nabs what many feel could end up being the best iDL in the 2021 draft. A 'kid' from Kenosha, WI - Nixon will get to take the field for his home state's storied franchise and instantly walks in as the second best person in his position's room. Kenny Clark is ecstatic and Packer fans even screaming at the moment will change their tune eventually. Fans and forums start discussing likely options at Pick #61, our next pick. Amon St. Brown, Eskridge, Atwell and/or Elijah Moore seem to be the favorites at WR to look to...with others wondering if Tommy Tremble or Hunter Long could fill an offensive weapon but at the TE position? As discussion rages, "Trade" pops up on all our screens and the smallest of thoughts wonder if perhaps Gute finally got a yes for a weapon. Nico Collins is by leaps and bounds the best WR still available to nearly every pundit and fan...but no this isn't how the narrative is supposed to go - we don't draft WR's this high or at all... Packers have traded away their #61 (2nd) and their third round pick....WAIT WHAT??? Dear Lord we must want this player....the third round pick is their 2022 Pick though; no doubt Gute is willing to trade next year equity for now in part for Rodgers (hopefully) but also with Jones, Linsley and King all signing elsewhere compensatory picks are heading our way. With the 43rd pick of the 2021 NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers select Nico Collins WR - Michigan. Some say, that if you were outside when the pick was announced you could hear a gentle rumble if you live in the Midwest - for the state of Wisconsin was cheering LOL. Finally, Green Bay had made a move for an pass catching weapon. Nico Collins, opted out of the 2020 season at Michigan...but many had him pegged as a guy fighting to be included in the 1st round had he played. His skillset is immense, but his ego is not. Be happy Packer nation, most pundits are fairly certain you just got that receiving threat of the future to help Rodgers and Adams. Breathing easier the draft begins to move on for Packer nation...no more trades occur for Gute and the following unfolds. #92 (3rd) - Joe Tryon EDGE - Washington - Provides instantly our #3 behind Z and Gary for 2021 and makes the departure of Preston less of a worry. #112 (4th) - Shakur Brown - CB - Michigan State - While at 5'11', he has the edginess needed to line up outside and possibly become an answer to our #2 outside CB riddle left by King's departure.
