Fumbled snaps, unblocked pass rushers, missed throws and one terrible turnover to end the one-hour-and-50 full pads practice made for a terrible day. "I think it's part of training camp," LaFleur said. "Some days the defense wins, some days the offense wins. Overall, we have to operate with more urgency, just in and out of the huddle." … 1a) The final straw came when Jaire Alexander stripped Davante Adams after he caught slant from Aaron Rodgers, and Blake Martinez recovered the fumble. It was the first play of a third-down period, and LaFleur yanked the No. 1 offense off the field immediately. "That's what happens in a game -- you fumble, you're off," LaFleur said. ... 1b) LaFleur was clearly not happy with the intensity of the practice. It's the first time the new coach has been openly critical of his team, saying "I just don't like the sloppiness in terms of you can always control your effort. Some of the other stuff is out of your control, but you can control your effort, you can control pre-snap penalties, the communication, leaving a guy uncovered, the quarterback-center exchange, it just needs to be better." … 1c) It wasn't just the offense, either. When asked about a long run by Aaron Jones, LaFleur said: "Our defense has to do a better job making sure those holes are not there. Because you cannot give up gashes in the run game." … 2) David Bakhtiari lost only one rep in the 1-on-1 pass rushing in all of the 2018 training camp, which made it stunning to see the All-Pro left tackle get beat on back-to-back reps on Tuesday. But Za'Darius Smith got him on a couple of quick inside moves. "I kind of forgot what it felt like to lose so I kind of wanted to lose two in a row to see how I respond for the rest of practice," said Bakhtiari, who is 2-2 against Smith in camp so far. … 2a) Smith wasn't the only impressive defensive player in the 1-on-1 drill: Dean Lowry twice beat starting RG Billy Turner and Kenny Clark split a pair of reps with starting LG Lane Taylor. However, Preston Smith got nowhere in two reps against starting RT Bryan Bulaga. ... 3) Veteran Mason Crosby may be winning the kicking competition by doing nothing. While he remains out with a calf injury, Sam Ficken missed another kick – this one from 45 yards wide right – in four attempts. Tuesday's four kicks were the first against a live rush. Ficken is now 11-of-14 so far in camp. ... 4) The tackling donuts returned to practice. The Packers had not used them during the first four days of practice but defensive coordinator Mike Pettine said: "You never know what kind of tackling team you're going to have until you get to the games, but I'd be surprised if we're not pretty good at it." ... 5) This hardly fits into the breaking news category, but it sounds like Aaron Rodgers won't play in the preseason opener against the Texans on Aug. 8, especially if Rodgers gets enough quality work in the joint practices with Houston on Aug. 5-6. "Hopefully we get enough good work within those practices to maybe rest him that first preseason game," LaFleur said. Rodgers played exactly 7 snaps all of last preseason. 6) There were no new injuries to report, and the same seven players remained out from the previous practice.

Share

4h
