Interesting background, thanks. Again I'm not a hockey guy, but it's hard to imagine opposing goalies getting into it.
It's only happened 40 or 45 times as far as I know, but there've been some legendary bouts. However, you'll probably never see it again. Now there's a rule that if they cross the center red line to fight, they're automatically ejected, and pity the goalie who gets himself thrown out of a game when he has to skate back to the bench where his coach is waiting to discuss it.

But there've been some good ones, especially in the days before Ron Hextall retired and "Sugar Ray" Emery drowned. Emery was a hothead, and he could really take care of himself. He once got not just one, but two 5-minute fighting majors for the same fight (he fought two different guys; first knocked out the enemy goalie, and then when a skater attacked him to retaliate for kicking their goalie's ***, Emery fought him too.)

Some goalies really like to fight, but they don't usually get into it. There are some unwritten rules. They're so heavily armored, it's not really fair for them to start a fight with a skater, but if their teammate is getting mauled they'll usually go.

I don't remember that fight. But seeing body checks up close, near the glass, it's amazing those guys stay alive. And it's all within the rules of the NHL. It's interesting that during a fight, the refs do very little to try and break it up. Everyone is on ice and on skates. Probably a good idea.
To many refs would end up in the brawl. Those guys are not to be ucked with. That and unintiecfbb
Kn
Draper suffered a broken jaw, broken cheek bone, broken nose, and a concussion from the check from behind that he took in the playoffs the prior year. McCarty and Draper were linemates and best friends, a Mutt and Jeff if you will.
Draper is not a fighter, but his best friend was, and everyone knew who was going to settle this duspute. The tension was in the air for any fan of Detroit hockey, everyone knew something would happen after the first game in Colorado was pretty tame.

Tge first period started out with under card fights, and then it was a Royal Rumble. What i think is amazing, is McCarty only received a double minor for roughing when he smoked Lemieux, to get this melee in full flight, at the end of period 1. Then the 2nd period started with a fight 4 seconds in, and the fighting persisted in throughout the period. Lost in all this was a game for the ages, maybe the most exciting game i ever watched. It had numerous fight, tons of goals, just an edge of your seat game, culminating with the "hero" McCarty scoring the game winning goal in a 6-5 victory for the Wings in OT.
The crosscheck on Chris Draper also was weeks before his wedding if I recall correctly.

This is the primary point I was trying to make. That play is what forced a difficult throw.
3rd and 4 opens up the playbook some.
Getting in 3rd and 11 is a recipe for failure down in the Redzone. 3rd n 11 is hard enough anywhere on the field much less against that audience. They are one of the best Redzone Defender at their house. Knowing our opponent would help our Playcaller
That 2nd and 1 at the 5 call was terrible. You just gashed the Bears for 9 up the gut. Run right at them again. Do not be cute.

Exactly. Actually had they Run on 2nd n 1 there is no illegal OL downfield. It eliminates that penalty by default. At wurst it’s 3rd n 1 or at best 1st n Goal from inside the 5. We’d literally have 4 chances to get 4 yards.

I noticed we’re not alone. Last night Cleveland was a 3rd n 4 at the Pitt39
Once again I ask a ? If you are a HC and you pick up 2 or 3 yards there are you going to Punt in 4th n 1.5 from the Pitt37? Worst case you miss and leave them at their own 37 or 36 yard line. They threw about a 13 yard pass in the heavy snow and went incomplete. Browns punted and it went into the Endzone and came out to the 20. Think about that! The Browns passed s shot at 4th n 4 to get into FG range and 1st n 10 in exchange for a Punt that netted 19 yards?? I’d rather take a shot on 4th n 4 to get inside the Pitt35. 1st n 10. Cleveland Gave away a chance to get points in exchange for 19 yards of field position and losing possession on purpose. Literally.

I'm not really a hockey fan (used to like it when I was younger), but the Blackhawks have such a cool logo. I hope they never change it for politically correct reasons. I hear they play hockey games at Wrigley Field sometimes, that sounds pretty wild.

Hate to say it. But you just reminded me of the 2003 playoff in Philly with just over 2 minutes. Favre bootlegged on 3rd and was at best 2 yards fron a 1st down. We were around the 36. Sherman decides to punt and Puntwell put it in the end zone.

I have always been a Blackhawk fan since they won their first Cup back in 1961. The great Bobby Hull lived in my town. My friend took me to his house. He answered the door, smiled, and autographed my stick. The name and logo do nothing but honor the tribe.

Not in today's society. "Don't believe your eyes. Don't believe your ears. Don't turn on your brain. No way that kick was blocked because you SHOULD believe me....and I say they cheated." We'll be hearing about this for a long time to come.

You are probably right, maybe it was just me that was going to bed, and hoping to sleep like a baby... I don't know, the older I get the more confused I become. Thanks Weeds for knocking some sense into me, what was I thinking?

Probably? We're dealing with Bears' fans here. :roflmao: If my wife's uncle, the Rockford Bears fan hadn't passed away, he'd be in perfect pitch whine trying to convince me they were robbed. (RIP Larry. Miss ya brother, BUT IT'S 11 IN A ROW YA WHINY 'LIL THANG YOU.)

As I've gotten older I've just gotten better at tuning out the crowd that loves to be unhappy.

The NFL isn't as lucky as the rest of us, when it comes to being able to tune out unhappy Bear coaches and fans. That said, they considered the Bears grievance with the block FG and made their decision.

I know Bear fans, the NFL, the other 31 teams and their fan base, and most of the world are pitted against you, rough life you live.

Once again. IF a HC files a grievance (similar to a challenge flag) there should be repercussions if it’s found to be within the rules.
I say the Eberflus should be warned and put on probation, if he publicly makes any accusation that’s deemed false by the NFL in 2024 (and wastes the leagues resource again) he undergoes a 2 game suspension. :whistling:
