The NFLPA is the definitive source @ $14.0 mil cap space currently. The only reason to ever question their number is if there is some recent activity that might not yet have been posted by the NFLPA. Since there have not been any recent signings, that's the number at this point. The cost of the draft class will be about $4.5 mil once you account for the guys who get rolled out of the Top 51, leaving $9.5 mil. What I don't understand is why analysts will make a prospective deduction for the draft class while ignoring the other necessary deductions further down the line. There's no explanation except laziness or shortsightedness. $9.5 is for 51 players. What about 52 and 53 come opening day? That's a minimum of $1 mil. Based on the current roster it would be $1.14 mil. What about the practice squad? Assuming a 6% bump over last season's pay level that's a $1.4 mil cost. Knock $2.5 mil off the top just to fill out the roster and PS and you are down to $7 mil. Do analysts expect no one to be put on PUP or IR this season? Do they know that such players and their replacements count against the cap? Keeping $2 mil in reserve for PUP/IR replacements is a minimum prudent amount. That takes useable space down to $5 mil. There was scrambling among the chattering class in the last week to account for a Gutekunst comment that there's $5 mil left for potential spending. Was he (A) blowing smoke or (B) looking past his nose which the analysts can't see their way clear to do? The answer is (B). I don't know how this could be any clearer.
