it does feel at times like we’ve often skewed a bit too far towards “future” at the expense of “present”…
No one expects us to win the Super Bowl this year, so the time is now to put together a solid team that will hopefully peak in a few years. I do agree that when we had the HOF quarterbacks, it seemed like we sometimes skewed too much to the future.

Whoa, let's not get carried away, Gute knows 6,345% more?! WOW! I honestly thought until he made the AR trade he was middle of the pack at best, but 6,345% would mean he's the greatest GM of all time!
Not compared to you and Myself combined it doesn’t!
I drag down the % percentiles pretty good. Remember I said “you and myself” and I’m not banking on YOU bringing my historically poor drafting knowledge up much. Certainly not your posts I’ve read so far
J/K. I’m just having fun.

Please by all means. Go ahead and get back to disparaging and demeaning our draft

Didn't say was a horrible pick, just saying I would've picked different. I saw almost every game he did play and I didn't see run-stopper. Also, 1 pick doesn't = whole draft. Adding j/k seems insincere after all you said. I want to keep things nice and civil so let's just agree to disagree, cool?

I don’t think the frustration is necessarily with the pick. It’s the fact that we’ve spent the last 10+ drafts investing in the defense with little results. Probably due to the DC. Now we have a new quarterback with limited weapons. I know we can get some guys these next two days, but it seems like the definition of insanity with our draft picks

Can never have too many quality EDGE players.
This is why I wasn't surprised. Don't know the best players at the position but I do like the position chosen.
The pick makes sense, with the board I was praying trade but nope.
Me too. I was disappointed when Steelers moved up right after the Packers picked. I was hoping they wanted to leap Patriots too.

So you would have picked Jack Campbell?

Personally, at the time I told everyone (confidently) we were going to pick OT Broderick Jones and maybe JSN. Then I added "well, it could be Van Ness" as the commissioner was walking to the podium. I'm very happy with the pick, even though I would have done differently.

It doesn't make sense to decide which side of the ball to pick from ahead of time based on past drafts. You draft the best player to help your team. And Gute has put us into a position to go deep jnto the playoffs, IMHO, the last few years.

It's okay to disagree. There were more than one great player available.

Watching and listening to former HC Chuck Paganos film study. Plus did some research and I had no idea of what we had until now. He’s perfect for a mini rebuild and had he been a 4 year starter he’d been gone with Tyree

We went for an extremely versatile DL. He’s very young and he’s got tons to learn and he’s not meant to be a year 1 starter, although they can ramp him because he’s so talented.

He can do it all. 3-4; 4-3 ; 2i ; 5T 1Gap ; 2Gap ; Bull rush; set up OL; set edge ; he’s got pop em’ back. He’s hit toss ‘em to the side. He can swim around ‘em He can backstroke into space and he can shoot a gap with the best of them.

This kid isn't a master of anything but he gets the “All Around” award. 2nd best Edge in this class and our D just got better. He’s a young lighter JJ Watt style DL with OLB speed and if he fills inti that 285-290 and continues to rise? He could be very reminiscent of that style player. He’s an old Hockey player and plays with his hair on fire.

But Van Ness wasn't a run-stopper in college, he was known as a pass-rusher, mainly.

So do we just ignore film and tape or snaps? 49% of his snaps last year were Tackle or in...36% were B gap or in. Year before 92.6% of his snaps were b gap or in.

Just because his measurables are FREAKISH and he for sure can rush outside, this young man is more than comfortable reduced.

other than wanting some other position I don't see why anyone would dislike this pick.
Physically he's a beast and he's a couple years out from maturity on that frame. He carries it all well, doesn't look unnaturally big or like he is carrying weight he's not designed to. I think he'll hold up well.

He's long, strong, and down to get the friction...sorry, middle school music choices are coming back to haunt me.
But he has leverage and he can run you over too. Plays well and low for his size. Can bump inside or jump back outside. I don't think the run is going to be an issue for him, not even to start.

I don't care if he wasn't a starter, he played more than anyone else that did and for good reason. He's a bit raw, but very athletic.

and he plays a premium position, or can, i see no reason to dislike this pick

We could pick Jesus Christ himself but if he isn't a WR there is a large part of the fan base which would hate it.

He's too pretty. No game face. He won't be able to intimidate anyone.

I see Van Ness as Preston Smith's eventual successor. I hope Smith doesn't behave like Rodgers did when Love was drafted.

I don't know JC just doesn't seem to have enough meat on his bones or speed to be a quality WR. We've been waiting how many years for him, just to return to the huddle? I see him as more of a RB, a plodder, he carried that cross with determination! :coffee:

Does anyone still believe that the Packer GM know what he is doing? What a drop off from those GM's they have had in the past. This draft will become an albatross for the Packers and at some point during the season .. Van Ness has a lot of positives, one major negative and question mark is if he was the 13th 1st round pick how did he NOT start one game for Iowa? Is there an issue with his ability to play a full game? what was it that caused a HC and DC not to start a guy supposedly rated this highly? Gute says they are not rebuilding, players say they are publicly and privately, so.... looking at the trade, the draft pick and their team.... GB is rebuilding and it will take a while; Minn still #1 in the divison, Det improving, Chi improving - both with somewhat proven QB's .... GB ?????? would not be surprised at a 6-11 season this year but also not another 8-9....

Because he's a sophomore and IA starts their upper classmen vs young guys usually. he played more snaps than any of them that should speak to his ability to finish and play in games.

I'd be ok with a defensive player of the year performance or something out of him :)

LVN hasn't even put a Packer jersey on yet and people seem to be declaring him a bust, but this? Come on man! It is one fricking pick.

Much like how I felt with Rashan Gary, the more film of LVN that I watch and the more I read, the more I like this guy. Originally, I said he reminds me of TJ Watt, but he actually he is a bit more like Gary and ....JJ Watt. He has a lot of versatility like Gary and developing his body and game, a lot like JJ did. As he gets bigger, stronger and more fine tuned, this guy could be a beast.

LVN played really well on special teams for Iowa as well. He had 2 blocked punts in 1 game against Iowa State. Like I said, the more I read, the more I like.
